I had heard a lot about this being one of the best hotels in watamu but I was really disappointed.
Small rooms, very very old, poor amenities, average customer service. No tv in room! No minibar! The person at the reception didn't know the Internet password!
The area below my bed was very dusty and dirty.
Food was below average.
They could use some serious renovations.

Visited in April 2013 with a group of 28 solo travellers and after 4 days on safari was looking forward to a relaxing 10 days at an all inclusive beach resort. I wasn't disappointed.

The staff are exceptional, very friendly and attentive. My favourite spot to sunbathe was around the adult pool and after a couple of days the pool guy knew which beds to put the mattresses out on and the bar staff knew what drinks to bring - on one occasion I ordered a drink at the main bar and after a few minutes thought they'd forgotten and went back to my sunbed. A couple of minutes later the drink was delivered to my sunbed with an apology for the delay. OK, the hotel wasn't busy as it was shutting at the end of April for the close season and it may not be quite the same in high season. Even check in when 29 of us arrived simultaneously tired and irritable after a long cross country transfer from our last game lodge, everything was handled politely and efficiently and the provision of hot towels along with the welcome drink was a nice touch.

My Lamu room was clean, spacious and well equipped, only on one occasion did I hear my neighbours above when the kids decided to rearrange the furniture at 8:00 in the morning.

The food was plentiful in supply and choice and the hotel put on a special barbecue for us on our last night (in the restaurant as it was unfortunately too windy on the beach) and the chateaubriand was sensational. They also baked us a cake to celebrate which along with birthday cakes delivered throughout our time there was brought to the table by the collective restaurant and bar staff and their improvised instruments - a nice touch. There is no excuse for going hungry with food available pretty much throughout the day including freshly cooked pancakes every afternoon at 4, and late night snacks at 11:00 pm.

Downsides: Few really.

It was very windy on the beach, the main pool is almost totally enclosed and was very hot with no breeze but the adult only pool had just enough breeze to keep it pleasant. The beach was also very seaweedy but a combination of this being a protected coastline and the spring tides whilst we were there made this unavoidable. There are a group of local lads on the beach who are trying to sell souvenirs but they were actually generally friendly and happily took many of our group to investigate the rock pools at low tide. They can, however, seem intimidating but there is a line halfway down the beach that they cannot cross and 24/7 security on the beach and around the hotel.

There were a lot more locals outside the front of the hotel and you probably wouldn't want to go wandering into the village after dark other than in a group but there wasn't really much to go for anyway. Being on the equator it is dark by about 6:30 irrespective of the time of year.

The entertainment was OK but not a lot of it in our second week which was the last week of the season and I heard there were only about 70 in the hotel.

All in all, a great hotel with fantastic staff and a perfect option after a few days on safari - 4 of us in our group actually booked an extra overnight safari to the Masai Mara which was organised through the hotel with no problems at all - if you discount being stranded at an airstrip in the Mara for 2 hours in a thunderstorm due to a problem with the plane but can't really blame that on the hotel!

Would I return? If I was returning to Kenya I'd have no hesitation going back to Turtle Bay.

Room Tip: Stayed in a ground floor Lamu room backing onto the adult pool, also close to beach and just a coupl...

We stayed at this hotel during the end of April for one week. We have travelled extensivley in Africa and knew what sort of service to expect from a hotel of this standard. The staff did not let the hotel down, they were polite couteous and helpful at all times even though we stayed at the end of the season.when they must all of been looking forward to the hotel closing for a few weeks! The hotel itself is very tired looking and could do with a lick of paint. The rooms were comfortable but also need updating, the bathroom was dull and a little dirty. The food was average but plenty of variety on offer. The entertainment in the evenings was good and on the whole the hotel setting is very beautiful. The beach boys can get on your nerves trying to sell all the time, but of course they do need to make a living. If you ask them to leave you alone they they will do so. We organised a safari with Nemo who saved us £350 on the tour operators price each, and all went like clockwork. We stayed at Treetops in the Masai Mara, lots of beautiful animals but have stayed in nicer places. The Masai Mara is beautful and well worth the trip.
The reason that we took a three day safari while only on holiday for 1 week was to get away from the dire English people staying at the hotel, most of whom had stayed there umpteen times before and what they didnt know about what you should and shouldnt do wasnt worth knowing! Very clicky!
I would say that this isn`t a young couples hotel more a family and middle aged couples place.
We wouldnt go back but did however enjoy our stay.

Room Tip: Beach rooms have a lovely view and you can step out of the door straight onto the beach

My fiancée and I chose Turtle Bay as the venue for our wedding, partly because we love the place and also our family and friends could book a package holiday from the UK to come and join us for the celebrations.
Although the hotel has been there for a long time now and the building is getting on a tad the standards are absolutely fantastic, it is testimony to the dedication of the management team and the staff who all work hard to make sure that your stay is memorable for all the right reasons.
The wedding was planned to perfection and everyone involved took pride in making sure all went well, which it did, a big thank you to Nancy the event planner who was brilliant.
The whole group had a wonderful time for the whole of the stay, comfortable and clean accommodation, very good food throughout, fantastic staff, great pools and amenities and patient security staff who had to put up with the midnight swimming antics of a couple of our more wayward 18-30s children.
Big thank you to Damian and the team for a good job well done, we will see you again in June.

Lots of great reviews for this hotel so really looking forward to a lovely relaxing holiday which on the whole we had. There were 3 of us sharing a club room which was perfectly adequate. The hotel is rather dated i feel and lacks atmosphere, but its very clean and comfortable. We were at the hotel a couple of weeks before it was due to close for the season and it was very quiet, we asked for a little background music to be put on at the bar and pizza restaurant in the evening but they couldn't accommodate this. Not the hotel's fault, but a big minus for this hotel was the fact that you couldnt step foot on the beach without hassle from guys trying to sell you trips and tours - and they seriously dont leave you alone - they line up looking for holidaymakers to step on the beach and pounce like sharks. Even when you went on an escorted walk with the hotel staff you were guaranteed that they would escort and try and sell every step of the way (this i think the hotel could arrange better). The food was buffet style and tasty enough, but certainly not wow. We tried the Blue Turtle restaurant which you paid for on our last day and it wasnt really worth the extra money. On the whole a nice but not exceptional hotel
