“Treated like family”
Reviewed April 27, 2014

We loved every minute of our time at Mawe. We were there for our honeymoon and from the minute we arrived until we left, we were taken care of like family. The entire staff was friendly and accommodating, and we left there feeling like we had really experienced something special. A big thank you to Joan, Tina, Angellah, Edwin, Charo, Titus, and the grounds, restaurant and pool staff for making our trip so memorable. The Italian design of this hotel was simple and comfortable, but incredibly beautiful. There are so many spaces on the property for relaxing and taking in the stunning views. The breeze is always coming in from the ocean, and the layout of the property makes it easy to rest and relax. We spent most of our time at the hotel because everything we needed was there. We are looking forward to coming back again. If you're traveling to the coast of Kenya, you can't miss this place. Guaranteed to have an unforgettable time!

Room Tip: Rooms on the top level are the best because of the view and the outdoor balcony and seating area wit...

We enjoyed relaxing at this beautiful hotel. It's a little difficult to access the hotel without a car, but we managed it with a moto taxi. The service was superb -- we arrived in midafternoon from Mombasa and the staff fixed us up a special light lunch, which was just what we needed. The food is almost all Italian, so if you don't enjoy pasta and pizzas, you might want to venture out of the hotel for food. Dinner also starts late, 8pm I think it was. You can access the beach through stone steps leading down from the pool area, but forget about doing this during high tide, when the water laps up into the stairwell. Also, the beach in this area isn't sandy but seaweedy and marshy. Still, it's a lovely hotel and I would definitely go back.

We loved this hotel. We stayed for a couple of nights in January and were the only people there. We are independent travellers with a car and the hotel is not well signposted from the road. Also the only parking was outside the hotel gate. Not a real problem as the hotel appears to be in a secure compound.

The room was everything you see in the photos on their website: large, clean, and very comfortable with a large balcony area with sofa and comfortable chairs. The pool, the loungers on the cliff top, the view, the bar, and the service were all excellent. We ate in the hotel one night and our only comment would be that the food was all Italian style. If we were staying longer we'd have wanted more variety and some local influences.

The manager, Joan, was attentive and interested in our views on how to improve the hotel. Apart from the comment on the food, we couldn't improve this hotel. We paid USD140 per night which is outstanding value given the quality of this place.

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Have a deluxe room - outstanding value.

The view of the ocean at the hotel was great. The welcome was warm and I was really stoked to see the flowers decorated on my bed when I first arrived.

The Wifi was off and on; when I asked at the reception I was told the wifi was connected to the air conditioning in room 3 and if the ac was switched off the wifi went off ( could not understand why they would set up the wifi in such a way that it was outside their control and dependent on the guest staying in that room)

There was nothing to watch on TV and the air conditioning was also off and on. Breakfast had a limited offering. However I did enjoy my stay and they were gracious enough to organise a birthday cake and dance/sing for my colleague

Room Tip: For the period it might be best to request for room3 if you want to ensure the Wifi is constantly wo...

we had a wonderful time. 3 days by the pool, 2 on safari and 3 more back by the pool - pure bliss. there's the "don't sit down/don't touch that" type of chic and the informal, comfortable and wholely inviting type and st. thomas is definitely that. the staff were wonderful, attentive and helpful - the rooms were large and airy ... huge, comfortable beds ... deep-plush towels and bathrobes ... a/c was available but we never felt the need for it. the food was excellent. the hotel is situated on a shelf of ancient coral overlooking the indian ocean. there is no beach as such but it's a short walk down some steps through a tunnel to a lower level of coral and on to a lovely, white sandy beach in an adjoining bay. be prepared to be hassled by men hawking safaris of one sort or another, restaurants, etc.. the second time we went, one of the staff offered to accompany us and they hassled us less. (if you are accompanied, tip accordingly.)

we paid for full board - breakfast, lunch and dinner - and we were glad we did. there are restaurants in other hotels but this involves hiring a taxi or chuk-chuk and possibly a late return to st. thomas in the dark. what little we saw of watamu was not all that inviting - but to be fair, we are both of a certain age and our days of adventure and discovery are long gone.

(having said that ... our return flight on air ethiopia was the one that got hijacked to switzerland and we had a very adventuresome time of it indeed ...)

if you do choose to go on safari to tsavo east national park i would suggest you arrange this through the hotel and if possible, request that mr. ali mumba be your guide. there were 5 in our safari group and one of them said she had experienced another driver who did just that - drive - and they saw very little game as a result. ali was constantly on the look-out for game and thanks to him we were able to see three lions before he shared their location with the other guides.

at the risk of being accused of dabbling in hyperbole or being overly generous, i'm going to give the hotel 5 stars - simply because i can't think of a thing that was missing from the facilities or wasn't provided for by the staff. i repeat, we had a wonderful time.

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of our honeymoon.
Although it's a little tricky to find (hint: print a map to give to your taxi driver) once you arrive you won't be disappointed. This boutique hotel is ideal for a break on the Kenyan coast.
Bruno, the owner and Joan, the manager will go out of their way to make your stay exceptional.
They helped organise our boat trip and even drove us to Malindi which saved us 30mins in a taxi.
It's worth opting for one of the luxury rooms as they have balconies and are more airy and light.
The staff are fantastic and can't do enough to help you.
Highly recommended - you won't be disappointed.

We couldn't have hoped for a better first hotel experience in Watamu. The place has stunning views, excellent service, very good food, and Bruno and Giusi are wonderful hosts that go out of their way to cater to your every desire.

I cannot imagine staying anywhere else in Watamu! Bravi!
