“Wonderful tour!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2013

This review is long overdue. We visited Carrara in September 2012 and enjoyed a tour of the Carrara marble quarry with Gabriele of Cave di Marmo Tours. It was the highlight of our trip! He was very informative and knowledgable on the subject. As foodies, we were particularly interested in learning about Lardo di Colonnata. It was the perfect tour for the region. We would recommend this tour for anyone visiting Carrara.

“'Living in the Stone Age'”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2013

We were staying in Lucca in late September, and wondered how we could get to Carrara. The tourist office in Lucca was not very helpful and only had information about Lucca. We e-mailed the oganisation of Cave di Marmo Tours, leaving names and mobile phone number. Gabriele, the guide, phoned back that afternoon, saying when he could pick us up at the train station in Carrara. We got the train to Carrara via Viareggio, was picked up by a Landrover and we headed for the mountains of marble - known as the Carrara quarries. We were very excited and not disappointed. We sat and took many photos and videos of the drive up the mountains to the quarries. 188 quarries in total. Gabriele called it 'Living in the Stone Age' . Lots of information, history, great sights. This trip is a must for anyone in the area. Well worth the money. Comfortable shoes is recommended since the walking surface could be rocky. It was not dusty as I had expected.

I really desired to visite these marble quarries, over all because I am Italian and proud of our history. The area is interesting, but the experience I had is not to be repeated and strongly not recommended. It was just a ride by a off-road car, in the name of the business. Everything with rush, twice the same route with the aim of picking up a group of tourists (foreigners) and in a hurry again, since another group of tourist was waiting for the same tour. The guide spoke quickly to say much as possible in the less time as possible. 2 1/2 hours, including a journey from / to the train station (24 km). All this for 35 euros but I would not have done even for free !

“Marble anyone? Up close and touchable!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2013

Just think of where the marble came from the next time you admire Michelangelo's David, or look in awe at the Pantheon or the Column of Trajan in Rome. For centuries Carrara has been synonymous with marble, and if you want the real Carrara experience, Cave di Marmo Tours is a great way to go. You're taken to the top in a 4x4 land rover, with a professional guide who really knows the ins and outs of the many separate mines.

Because we were visiting the during the Ferragosto public holiday week, the mines were quiet, but that allowed for easy access up the rocky hills without the truck traffic that one usually encounters. Our guide and driver was the lively Heike, who fearlessly maneuvered the steeps while giving us an enthusiastic history of her adopted Carrara. Having the background stories along the way made the trip more enjoyable. There were plenty of opportunities to get out and view the panoramas, ask questions, and bask in the reflected light. Unforgettable and worthwhile.
