These are world class places and they are very well managed. Wednesdays are free but need to book a time for the visit in advance

“Plan well ahead if you want to see the caves”
Reviewed October 4, 2011

Our review is a commentary on the bureaucracy of the visitors centre, not on the caves themselves, which we didn't get to see. In order to visit the caves you have to go to the visitors centre and book in advance. (You can't book over the phone or on the web site). We spent three days in Ribadesella. We went to the visitors centre on the first afternoon of our stay, but were unable to arrange a visit to see the caves on either of the following two days. Guess it will be easier later in the year..

“Profound experience, never felt before”
Reviewed August 4, 2011

During our stay in Asturias, we visited the cave of Tito Bustillo near our hotel. We had fortunately made reservations for our 11 a.m. guided visit on line from the U.S. The experience was unforgettable! Our guide explained the beautiful cave paintings, tens of thousands of years old, yet looking fresh and striking. The adjacent museum is state-of-the-art, and worth a separate visit, on a different day. Seeing these prehistoric caves alone is enough to ponder for one day. Don't wait very long to visit. Soon enough, this art too will only be accessible to the experts.

“Don't miss it!”
Reviewed June 16, 2011

We ended up in Ribadesella sort of by accident, so we hadn't done any research on the city's attractions. That's my excuse for not even knowing about these caves!

The cave paintings are paleolithic art, going back 25,000 years. It's absolutely amazing. Imagine standing there and seeing a cave painting that is exquisite that is that old! It is truly awe-inspiring.

You have to reserve your tour of the caves as they limit the number of people who go into the caves per day. We were lucky and got in the same day, but we were there in May and not there during high season. So book ahead.

The admission price gets you a tour of the caves, about an hour. The guide we had spoke decent English, so she was able to conduct the tour in Spanish, then summarized what she said in English.

Then you can go to the museum exhibits, included in the admission price, and it is absolutely first-class.

Really, if you don't do anything else when you are in Ribadesella, go to this place. If you have any interest in history, make a point of going here.
