The La Calma Hotel is very cozy and is exactly as seen in their web page. We were kindly greeted by Morelia, the warm and welcoming owner. She nicely guided us and gave us suggestions of the places and restaurants to visit. And the room we stayed in was more valuable than we had imagined. Just being there helped us to relax and clear our minds from our everyday routines. It was very worthwhile, and we look forward to staying there again sometime in the near future.

Spent a few very pleasurable days here on our way along the Atlantic Coast. The rooms were very well kept and spacious and provided everything that we needed. Breakfast was great and really set you up for the entire day. Andrew and Morelia were extremely helpful in providing directions, beach locations and restaurant bookings. Private parking was great after spending a lot of time and money in other locations parking the car. It is a mile or two outside of Ribadesella but as others have mentioned, park on the opposite side of the bridge to the town and walk over. Highlights would be the kayaking down the River Sella (even for me as a non-swimmer) and eating in the Sidreria Carroceu and Restaurant Abidal.

We stayed here for 5 nights in July and La Calma was just what we were looking for, a place to relax and unwind after a couple of hectic months at work. The house is in a beautiful, peaceful, location with views of the mountains and fields close to Ribadesella yet only a few minutes drive from the town and the motorway, which made La Calma an excellent base to discover the coast and the Picos de Europa. Every morning, Morelia and Andrew were on hand to recommend walks, beaches, restaurants and routes on Google maps - their personal knowledge and recommendation of things to do in the area were really appreciated, and this is something we missed in the next hotel we stayed in in Cantabria.
Five days were not sufficient to visit all we wanted to, and we hope to be able to visit again soon in the not too distant future, if only to try one of Morelia´s massages!

The hotel is small and friendly built in a traditional style with a large garden. The owners take a great deal of pride in their local area and can offer a wealth of advice as to what to see and where to go in all weather conditions, even providing google maps and directions. Trips out and meals can be booked through the hotel at no extra cost, certainly a boon if your spanish language skills are not good. Although the hotel is situated a little way out of Ribadesella it is fine if you have a car as it is possible to park at the edge of the town and walk in.

Having read so many positive reviews, we were somewhat disappointed with La Calma and indeed Ribadesella. On the positive side, the owners were most welcoming, friendly and very helpful in advising about local restaurants, etc.

The accommodation is a modern purpose built B&B of a reasonable quality. The building is located within 6 metres of a semi rural road, with space for the parking of guests’ cars. There are adjoining properties on either side (one being that of the owners) and the rear overlooks an exposed lawn with some planting and the river Sella flood plain beyond. There is a lounge for the use of guests. The bedroom was small and plainly furnished with a lot of dark brown wood, including the ceiling. The bathroom was too small with no room for a bath (unhappy wife) and very limited shelf space. The TV showed only Spanish programmes; a DVD player was provided and a small collection of DVDs were available from the lounge. The modest breakfast is served in two sittings, 9.15 and 10.15.

There are plenty of good beaches around and the Picos de Europa are not far away. Ribadesella itself was not particularly interesting and parking is difficult in the town.

All in all we felt that La Calma was expensive, especially when, the next night, we stayed in a splendid city hotel with a huge room and bathroom and a sumptuous breakfast for a similar price.

We stayed at La Calma in early June 2010, and unfortunately it rained for the entire 4 days we were there. However, I found it to be like a beautiful little detached bed and breakfast, almost a home away from home, so whilst enjoying the many homely features, the weather barely mattered.

Our host Morelia was extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgable on the surrounding area, providing us with plenty of suggestions and resources for day trips and excusions despite the weather. Although we were unable to take part in a canoeing or horse trek, if we returned, these are definately activities we would enjoy.

The rooms are lovely, clean and well equipped, and this is one of only two places we stayed at in Spain with a decent shower! The guest lounge, dvd collection and books available to guests made for a lovely relaxing stay and a massage from Morelia took relaxation just that one step further.

After visiting most of the big cities in spain we were overjoyed to find this beautiful little hidden pocket of gems on the north coast of Spain. The area surrounding the Ribadesella area is packed with things to do and see. . even if it is raining. A few recommendations: Picos de Europa, Covadova, Cagnas de Onis, Oveido, Tito Bustillo Cave, Dinosaur Footprints, Dinosaur museum and of course sun and surf, weather permitting!

If we ever return to Spain we will definately be back for a visit!

The clue is in the name of this delightful small B&B. The setting with views across the valley, the beautifully decorated rooms, the friendly hosts and as much peace and quiet as you can ever hope for. To really calm you down try a holistic massage and maybe some Reiki from joint owner, Morellia. We stayed 4 nights and Andrew (from London) and his wife Morellia (Venezualan) couldn't have done more to make our stay enjoyable. They suggested some great restaurants, a trip into the Picos and a fun morning canoeing. The are has so much to offer and Ribadesella is a well kept Spanish secret.
