Owner description: Vaux le Vicomte is the creation of three men brought together by Nicolas Fouquet, Louis 14th's finance minister, the landcape architect Andre le Nôtre, the architect Louis le Vau and the painter-decorator Charles le Brun. The perfect harmony between architecture and landscape is the result of their collaborative genius. From its unveiling at the famous fête of august 17th, 1661, Vaux le Vicomte aroused the envy of the Sun King and became the model that inspired the whole of Europe, including Versailles.Vaux le Vicomte can be visited during the day or at night with 2000 candles (on Saturdays from may to beginning of october)Easy access by train or by bus from paris.

I read about Vaux-le-Vicomte in a blog and couldn't resist going. I went in December and not only was the Chateau amazing on its own, but they decorated many rooms with beautiful decorations and Christmas trees. Children could dress up as musketeers or princess (adorable!) and were given gifts at the end of the visit. You can tell that the owners put a lot of effort into making this a special experience and that was a very welcome change from most tourist attractions. Also, the food in the cafeteria was amazing!
One important thing to note - it's difficult to get to in the off-season, and there are scammers at the train station pretending to be taxis. Just ask for the real taxi number at the info desk of the train station.

A really magical place to visit during Christmas as all the rooms are decorated beautifully. I also like to visit during Easter as there are crafts and an Easter egg hunt for children.

This is THE castle behind Louis XIV’s fury which then prompted his decision to expand Versailles into what it is today! On a Saturday last June, we had the immense privilege of taking part in a tour of the grounds led by the owner’s son. We learned about their gardening techniques and challenges and we visited many of his favorite spots all the whilst being treated to personal anecdotes. This family-run enterprise is a huge undertaking given that they do not have similar resources to state-run organizations such as Fontainebleau, Versailles, etc. Vaux le Vicomte, due to its human scale, can be enjoyed in a leisurely and relaxing way. We did not see large bus groups the day we were there. So spend a relaxing day (or half-day) and take it all in - you will be enchanted!

There are no crowds at Vaux-le-Vicomte. We took a bus tour from center city Paris on a beautiful sunny day to Maincy and Fontaineblau. The drive was relaxing and the visit pleasant. Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte is a MAGNIFICENT baroque masterpiece. My daughter did a project in French in school on Vaux-le-Vicomte and that motivated me to arrange a visit to the castle instead of the usual Versailles. There were not many tourists visiting the day we came. The grounds were fabulous, La Notre's garden pure magic, the rooms and the history everything I expected. I recommend seeing the movies The Man in the Iron Mask and the James Bond movie The Moonraker in which the castle was featured.
At Vaux-le-Vicomte you will learn everything about the trio behind this mid-17th century masterpiece: the architect Louis Le Vau, the landscape architect André le Nôtre, and the painter-decorator Charles Le Brun. Their collaboration marked the beginning of the Louis XIV style. I loved the food we ate at the restaurant, tasty and affordable.

We visited en famille on a beautiful sunny winters day with blue skies and a nip in the air. It could not have been more perfect. The gardens are perfectly formed and the optical illusions created by the designer Le Notre are so clever and well explained in French and English. The quotations written in stone dotting the paths are evocative and the size of the gardens are very deceptive. They are well worth the energy!

The château has several rooms fully dressed for Christmas with trees, lights, girlands......the lights are turned down low and the log fires are burning. It is spectacular and wonderful. The exterior of the château is also decorated with loads of Christmas trees and lights in the hedges and bushes. It is worth waiting for sundown or near to get the best effects outside.

There was also an excellent exhibition and innovative video/3D presentation on the creation of the gardens.

We visited the coach museum, the gardens, the château and the gardens again at twilight. It was a good order especially as it got colder during the end of the visit.

It cost 56€ for a family of 2 adults and 2 children and the kids got a free ticket to go on the 1900 merry go round and a lovely present from the treasure chest.

Car parking, directions, toilet facilities were all good with a very short walk to the château. I highly reccomend this château and will return in summer - they seem to have a good year round programme of events. I quite fancy the candlelit dinner. In the meantime, Christmas is really Christmas at the Château de Vaux le Vicomte!
