We have joined this trip in the outskirts of Paris in conjunction with the mediavel city of Provins. I am saying this because this castle is a nice 3 hour detour in the outskirts of Paris.

Upon entrance you can visit an interesting carraige museum which shows carraiges dating back in the 1800s. You can then visit the inner castle rooms which are obviously very luxuriously decorated. Such rooms are the master bedroom, entertaining room and dining room etc.

This will finally lead you to the back garden which is traditionally decorated with nice grass setups, ponds and surrounding statues.

On the downside, entrace for this castle is slightly expensive which was around Euros 50 for a family of 3. I beleive even Versaille is less than that. Fontainebleu castle is also in the outskirts of Paris however I never had the chance to visit it. However all in all the castle is a nice half day visit enjoyable by all the family.

Thank your for your message on this site.
I just want to correct an important information about the distance of Vaux le Vicomte from paris.
the castle is just 34 miles or 55km south east from paris, so basically 1 hour away depending on traffic.
We have now a lot of excursions possibilities from Paris center especially a new one running daily ( except on tuesday) from april to end of october and giving the possibility to tourists to visit Vaux le Vicomte and Fontainebleau's palace in the same day.
You can find more information on our practical information pages on our website.
best regards

This is well worth a detour if you're in the area and you should allow at least three hours to cover the Chateau properly. It is worth using the audio guide as this gives a detailed history of the place together with information about the rooms and their contents.

Outside there are hectares of formal gardens and waterways. We visited in January, so everything was in its 'quiet' mode. I would love to go back in the summer when there are regular fountain displays and other activities in the gardens.

I am always amazed at the difference between French and British architecture and landscaping of a comparable period. At the risk of upsetting someone, I will say no more, but it is interesting to consider a property such as this against some of the National Trust's properties of a similar era.

Being over 60 years, the entrance fee was €15 and I can remember what the prices were for others. We also had a light lunch in the restaurant that is available just after you gain access to the property and the food was fresh, well prepared and reasonably priced. Altogether a not to be missed experience.

France is not exactly short of wonderful places to visit but anyone staying in Paris and wanting a day away from the city should seriously consider this outsanding chateau, the precursor to Versailles, much more intimate but of exactly the same incomparable quality. One of the great attractions of Vaux-le-Vicomte is that you can see the chateau and beautiful grounds without the appalling hordes that totally ruin a visit to Versailles. Admittedly my 2 visits have been in the Spring not Summer but even at that time it's impossible to see the Sun King's Chateau without the overcrowding that totally ruins any sense of history. I won't comment on details that have been covered by other contributors. Highly recommended for anyone with an appreciation of great architecture in a beautiful landscape.

One of the most interesting and well-preserved historical castles in France. One hour drive from Paris. The park is also very nice.

If you into visiting and enjoying the chateaus of France, this is a very good one to see. Unfortunately when we were there on the 2nd of June, 2012, there was some construction scaffolding set up for repairs and the gardens were not in bloom due to this year's spring weather. However the grounds, fountains, and garden structures were still picturesque. Rent the golf cart and drive around the extensive grounds. Take the audio tour inside and enjoy the historical background of this chateau and the families that lived there. Very interesting politically and architecturally. We strongly recommend this palace on your chateau touring. Before you go, check out the timing of the festival activities. These may well enhance your visit.
