AC Hotel La Linea
Reviewed February 15, 2013 via mobile

From the outset, AC La Linea looked amazing in appearance throughout. All the facilities are clear and attentive to everyone's needs. Staff very helpful and polite. In my opinion anyone who would stay in this hotel would be extremely satisfied with their stay. Location is also brilliant as situated amidst Gibraltar and Algeciras.

I stayed here on a business trip in Gibraltar although wasn't able to get a room in Gib itself. Fairly convenient location from the border, about 15 minute walk along the beach pavement which is a nice change for someone from england. Taxi from the border is about 5 euros.

The room was very large, with a good bathroom and a balcony where you can see the Rock of Gibraltar clearly. In fact, i have a time-lapse video of the rock on youtube, search ZuluTravel and you should find it.

I didn't eat in the hotel, apart from breakfast which was OK. The bar area has wi-fi, although getting someones attention for a drink was difficult as they appeared to suss out the 'tourists' and accidentally on purpose not notice them. That was my feeling anyway.

Breakfast was basic in a rather small room, with a selection of cold items/breads and juices. fine for a quick breakfast in the morning, but was a bit boring after the 2nd morning.

....just one we didn't. Because the rooms have a minimalist look with dark parquet floors the noise level from another room was high. Aside from those inconsiderate neighbors stomping about (at 4am I called it stomping) and speaking very loudly in the halls, this hotel was perfect for our needs. Very clean, well appointed large rooms, nice bathroom, comfortable king bed, view of the ocean and just the top of Gibraltar .A friendly and helpful staff. We arrived at about 10pm, the restaurant closes at 10:30. Even though we walked into the restaurant at 10:15 the waitstaff was friendly and the sandwiches we had were satisfying and well presented. Neither the food prices or the room rate will break the bank. When we arrived late we were offered a late check-out for the next day. Room rate was less than 40 euro, dinner w/a bottle of wine was under 30 e. We walked to Gibraltar and back the next day and we were welcomed to leave our car in the garage for the day. The neighborhood has seen better days but we never felt uncomfortable.

Room Tip: Some room have large wrap-around balcony with view of the ocean.

Things we liked

• Nice room, spacious with a great wrapround balcony
• Good view of Gibraltar and bay
• Free minibar
• Smiling and friendly staff
• Free Nespresso coffee and pastries in the lounge (afternoons)
• Free WiFi in the lounge
• Good value for money
• Big Mercadona supermarket two blocks away

Things we didn’t like

• Connecting door in the room resulting in disturbance from noise next door
• Cigarette smoke coming through the connecting door
• Booking a guaranteed non-smoking room and having an ashtray and hotel matches in the room
• The balcony glass doors were covered in dirt
• We were often missing faceclothes or a bath mat
• The noise in the lounge – 2 TVs playing different channels plus music on the stereo
• Possibly slightly too far to walk into and out of Gibraltar if you walk round a lot in Gibraltar during the day too
• It’s in a residential area that’s seen better days but we never felt unsafe

Room Tip: Rooms at the front (and higher up) have a view of Gibraltar

We can recommend this inexpensive but good hotel for its location and proximity to Gibraltar. Arriving by ferry from Morocco, I met friends and stayed here for two nights so that we could visit Gibraltar which is a 15 minute walk away. Our rooms were nicely appointed, comfortable and clean and we had wonderful sea views from our balconies that included the Rock and the harbour and port of Algericas. With free wifi in the lobby, this hotel is set up for business clients and the value for money is excellent. Reception and room staff were friendly. The pool was closed and the breakfast offered few choices, but coffee and tea are available in the lobby over extended hours which makes up for the lack of tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms. Despite its proximity to the seafront, there are few cafes close to this hotel, we found some good restaurants and an excellent coffee lounge a ten minute walk away in La Linea village. La Linea is well connected by bus to other parts of Spain.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a room with a sea and Rock view

Do not stay in this dump even if you are desperate.! Try the sea view that resembles faulty towers!Even the thirsty will go unhindered, the bar,if you can call it that seems to be permanently closed. Avoid at all costs.BEWARE.

We stayed at the AC Hotel for one night, and then one night in Gibraltar. The hotel in Gibraltar cost double the amount we paid at the AC, and while it was quite acceptable it was not up to the AC's standards. The only problem is the location, La Linea is the one place on our Spanish travels where the economic plight of the country was obvious, with many of the people on the streets while holding on to their dignity looked distressed and tired. We did not feel threatened on a walk into the historic town centre, but when we did stop for a coffee and something to eat at a downtown sidewalk cafe, as well as when making a few small purchases, we were dealt with respectfully but without the pride and positive outlook we encountered in other parts of Spain.

The hotel itself was comfortable, clean and with an excellent staff. Breakfast was adequate, but the free minibar and the juices and soft drinks available all day in the lounge were a pleasant touch. The view of the bay and Gibraltar from our balcony room was priceless. Once you get the hang of the bizarre border crossing that takes you over the airport runway, and if you can feel comfortable in La Linea which is suffering hard times now, the AC La Linea is a great choice for saving money on a Gibraltar visit or if you are catching a flight there. Eating choices near the hotel are very limited. The church in the historic square is worth visiting.

Room Tip: Higher floor balcony room on the front gave us a spectacular view of the Rock and all the ships in t...
