“great food very poor spa”
Reviewed April 2, 2014

stayed here for 2 nights with my daughter. log cabins were very dated, bathroom freezing heater not working. spa facilities inadequate, something out of the sixties-badly in need of upgrading. Very casual attitude to repairs- when reporting the broken heater and the door out to the jacuzzi needing fixing, it was oh yes maintenance are aware of it... well go on , fix it...
I agree with a previous comment, some basic staff training wouldnt go amiss, also some basic availability in the bar, eg, worcester sauce, cranberry juice, amaretto?
The actual spa and restaurant staff are lovely and treatments excellent, the food was also excellent.but if you have bought a package saying.fruit basket, robes and slippers in the room, you expect them to be there. Also if you order a bottle of sparkling wine you want it poured into flutes not chunky cheap wine glasses so badly poured it is a mass of bubbles...and a wine bucket to put it in??

we had a groupon booking for 4 nights and it was certainly value for money. We had a room in the main block so not a log cabin but decor certainly made it feel as if you were in a cabin and with luxury of not having to go outside for facilities. bathroom a bit dated and shower lacked power but only real complaints. oh and bottled water and biscuits not replenished after first day.would agree with recent reviewer that walls are thin.
the breakfast is a real treat with lots of menu choices - try the french cinnamon toast. We didn't use the restaurant in the evening but ate in the bar a couple of times. All very good. Didn't get to use the exercise facilities.

Room Tip: Rooms in main hotel block mean you don't have to walk outside to breakfast etc

One of our friends recommended this hotel to us and I'm so pleased they did. We stayed here for one night with our 2 dogs and we will certainly be going back! Admittedly we only live 30 minutes away but once you're at the hotel it feels like you're a world away from the stresses and strains...

Check-in was easy - we were allocated lodge 58 which is actually the Bishopdale Suite . We were told we could drive to our little lodge and park right outside which was really handy. We went for a Sunday night deal which meant Champagne in your room on arrival which had been pre-chilled and it wasn't long before that was opened! The room was great - clean, luxurious and cosy. No complaints. We sat on the veranda of the lodge and felt ourselves de-stress. When it was time to get ready for dinner we found an iron/ironing board and hair dryer and there was plenty of milks for tea and coffee which I really appreciated as I hate it when you only get 2 milks between you for your whole stay!

In the evening we had a drink in the bar which is like a Swiss alpine lodge - Sauvignon Blanc to die for (thanks to the bar lady for the recommendation!).

Through to the equally funky alpine restaurant. We had the 6 course tasting menu. Quail eggs, haggis or goats cheese, mushroom velouté, chicken or veal, almond and mascarpone desert and cheese. The service was very very good. The food was very very very good.

Don't think twice about staying here. It was lovely and there is nothing not to love. We didn't use the health spa as I was too busy relaxing on the veranda outside our lodge with champagne in hand!

Stopped last week for a overnight break. Log cabins are marvellous, clean and tidy. We truly relaxed. Food a*. Staff attentive and friendly saying good morning. Bar had a selection of two hand pulled ales and let us sample each before purchase with was a lovely. My only criticism is that pool needed a little more attention when cleaning - but I appreciate it's got to be done out if season etc. if you after a relaxing break look no further.

We have just got back from celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary here. The hotel is lovely. We were in a standard room in a lodge, which was small but pleasant. The surroundings are pretty and the spa area was relaxing. Our deal included dinner which was the 6 course taster - amazing food and great to get us try stuff we wouldn't normally choose!
However... We both agreed we wouldn't return basically down to 2 things. The first in the thin walls between the bedrooms .... On our first morning we were woken at 6am by our very loud neighbour. We were really looking forward to a lie in without the kids... And actually ended up with a worse nights sleep than normal!! It was better on the second night as there were different people next door, but still not really great when you're away to have to be careful to not disturb others...
The 2nd more crucial thing was the appalling level of customer service! When we complained about the noise basically the receptionist said 'oh well, they've checked out now so it shouldn't happen again'... No apology or anything. This was after a complete cock up with out booking whereby they hadn't got us on the list (we booked through late rooms). Only because we'd happened to call earlier in the day were we able to resolve this and get a room... As we didn't arrive til 9pm it's a good job we hadn't just turned up! Again, no apology. And then they tried to charge us for the dinner included..., again no apology!
It's a real shame as this is a lovely place and a lovely setting with great food. Perhaps they just need to invest in some basic staff training! (And some wall insulation!!)
Still, we had a nice weekend celebrating!!

We stayed for two nights on 26-27 March 2014 owing to the fact that it had a spa and a place therefore to enjoy and relax in. We had phoned in advance requesting early check in and were told this would be fine and to arrive at 1pm. On arrival we were informed they had no record of this early check in request but they accommodated us having checked the room was ready. This was seen as good customer service.
We booked one of the lodges as opposed to staying in the main hotel. The room itself at first glance was great although we noted that the room could have done with a lick of paint, in fact the place itself around the complex did look rather tired.
Onto the spa. It was surprising to observe there was only one ladies changing room and one toilet. The room itself was tiny and so good that it was quiet when we were there otherwise it would have been a tight squeeze. The pool area again looked tired and the lights at the bottom of the pool had rusted making the pool colour look quite strange. The steam room was very small and would fit at a push 5 people. The sauna was again basic and again looked tired. The gym was well equipped.
We didnt eat at the hotel for the first evening but we did drink at the bar. The bar tender was often awol and so we spent time waiting to be served. There was one ale on tap which proved difficult for the barmen to serve as he struggled to prevent serving pints with very large heads. We had to ask him to top these up which was disappointing.
We booked for the restaurant for the second evening and soon established that the food is the hotels selling point. Rather disappointingly the service was not great and often we had to wait for a member of staff to come over to check things were OK. We sat for at least 10 mins at the end of the meal waiting to order a coffee and no one came over. We watched at least 4 members of staff clearing tables and setting up tables but they didnt think to check whether their guests were OK. We ended up leaving without a coffee or even being asked if we would like dessert.
Breakfast was good and had ample choices in terms of cooked food.
The welcome pack advised that you could get walking maps from reception. When we asked we were given directions as opposed to a map. We spoke to a couple later who advised they had been given maps. Again a slight disappointment.
All in all an average stay. We went for the spa facilities but were left very disappointed.

We visited the hotels as a group of friends and had 6 rooms for the weekend.. Rooms were fine but a bit tired. We arrived Friday evening and some of the party arrived late and were unable to get any food post 9.30. What food we had was ok but the bar prices are extortionate. Breakfast on the first day was ok but they got some of the order wrong (hot breakfast is done to order). Some of the party used the spa facilities and found the pool not to clean an the Jacuzzi cold. We stayed in to eat on the second night (as the hotel is some way out of town) but the service we got was abysmal, service with a smile but no thought or consideration. They did not even ask if we wanted sweets and coffee. We complained and the waiter apologised but was not that bothered. The food was in the main ok but some mains were not very hot and some had to wait for their sides to arrive which meant the mains got cold.

Breakfast on day 2 was a lottery, they got the orders completely wrong and after 3 attempts we got roughly what we ordered.

We complained when we checked out and they receptionist took our concerns to pass on to the restaurant manager.

Overall the rooms were warm, clean and fine.

Room Tip: Hotel rooms ok and lodges a little tired but in the main but acceptable, but eat elsewhere.
