“Should have been good but a big letdown”
Reviewed April 9, 2013

Booking on line the website hotel looked and and sounded attractive but was disappointing.
Basically it is a very large log cabin in rural grounds but I found the rooms gloomy and the whole place over priced. For me a good efficient shower is a must and this was not so in my room ---the shower over a bath was barely a trickle----so back to the fifties!
Dinner quality was only average and certainly too expensive. There seemed to be plenty of staff around , at dinner I was served by no less than four, but all were helpful
Certainly try it but don't expect much!

This was the third Crerar Hotel we have stayed in. we only stayed the one night so didn't have time to explore the facilities fully.
plus points: very picturesque, welcoming fire at reception, nice food and comfy bed.
negative points: staff could have been friendlier/more efficient, bar area could have been warmer and last but not least, cleanliness could have been better. i'm pretty sure all of these points have been made by previous reviewers! if the tiles in the swimming pool are brown and sticky as a consequence of an environment-saving aeration process then the hotel management should be pointing that fact out to customers as soon and as clearly as possible!
We booked this hotel because we had such a good experience at the Crerar Loch Fyne Hotel, unfortunately neither this hotel or the Isle of Mull Hotel (also Crerar) measured up!

we stayed here with our teenage children ,on arrival customer service seemed very poor . Two separate couples in front of us both got told they had no bookings. the customer service team did not seem to handle the situation in a professional manner.the rooms were nice more like log cabins than hotel rooms .we stated in a family room 4 ,it had a nice view out onto the lake and not far from the pool etc. however there was a terrible smell coming from the bathroom . . didn't eat in the restaurant at night but breakfast was ok .

Thanks for the review it was great to hear from you. The couples in front of you at the desk unfortunately had turned up to stay with us but on the wrong date. Reception was a little flustered as you can imagine but after a time we managed to accommodate them in one of our lodges. I have looked into you point regarding the smell and can find no evidence of this. I apologies if this marred your stay, but I will pass on your comments regarding breakfast.

I have just returned from staying at the Chevin Country Park Hotel & Spa and I can honestly say it has been fantastic!
I organised a hen party for 12 ladies which included afternoon tea with champagne, 1 x spa treatment each, use of spa facilities including the pool and jacuzzi, a 3 course meal and breakfast the following morning. We stayed in 2 of the hotels lodges and they were beautiful. Set in the forest it was peaceful and quiet. The lodges were warm (with heating in the walls) and spacious. Everything was cleaned immaculately and the decor was modern yet traditional-it felt very homely! We had tea and coffee facilities, hair dryer and luxury shower accessories.

Afternoon tea is recommended- fresh scones, clotted cream, sandwiches, fresh fruit and cheesecake -all washed down with a glass of champagne!

Spa was lovely- good sized pool, steam room, sauna, indoor jacuzzi and outdoor jacuzzi overlooking the lake-it was stunning!
Each of the 12 girls had a 30 minute treatment each which we all thoroughly enjoyed! Also, we were given a complimentary hotel room close to the spa which we could all get changed in. There was refreshments of tea and coffee and water available for us. The hotel rooms are stunning - overlooked the lake and had a patio with chairs for us to sit outside and relax!

Throughout our stay the staff were brilliant. Nothing was too much for them-even when we kept mixing up our room keys and getting locked out of our lodges! After the evening meal we asked 2 of the male members of staff to get involved in the games for the hen and they were great sports and made the night so memorable - thank you to them both!

Food was fabulous-we each ore-ordered and the staff even provided a special meal for a lady in our group who is pregnant. It is quality food - we were well looked after and our every need was catered for.

Beds were very comfortable, there was robes and slippers provided for each guest on the beds.

Breakfast was great- as soon as we arrived we were greeted and looked after. Food was great-a range if hot breakfasts available which were all beautifully presented. Also a buffet of fresh croissants, fresh fruit and cereal available.

Overall-would highly recommend this hotel for a stay. Whether you are staying with a friend or partner or wanting to have a memorable family get together or a hen party (with style!) then book the Chevin Hotel. You will not be disappointed! Thank you to all the staff who made our stay so lovely.

My partner and I had a less than satisfactory stay at the Chevin Country House Hotel and Spa.

The bathroom (no bath) was really grubby around the shower cubicle (the grout etc). The ceiling in the shower was really low. Luckily we’re both pretty small but anyone 5’ 6” or more would have had to duck their heads. There was no complimentary shower gel – something I’ve never seen in any decent hotel. The toilet was so close to the basin that the seat had actually been fitted at an angle so you could sit down.

The cabin, whilst clean enough, could have done with a lick of paint. The duvet had lumps of feathers in parts, and nothing elsewhere so seemed really thin. The bottom sheet was too small to tuck under the mattress. There was no alarm clock even though it was stated that there would be.

There was only one packet of biscuits provided, and it wasn’t even replenished the second day, neither were the bottles of water. I accidentally broke one of the water glasses and that wasn’t replaced either.

The walls are paper thin so you can hear people talking in the next room. But the worst thing was that the water tank for their bathroom seemed to be located in the wardrobe of our cabin and when they were using the shower it sounded like water was running into a basin in our room – really irritating and scuppered any likelihood of getting a lie-in.

The grounds are quite pleasant, but the location of our cabin meant we were looking out at parked cars through every window.

The spa facilities were very poor. The pool looked really grubby, as though it had never been cleaned and the jacuzzis were luke warm, so cool in fact that it wasn’t pleasant to sit in them.

The only positive thing I would say is that the breakfast was really nice and the restaurant staff were very pleasant and efficient.

I certainly wouldn’t recommend this hotel to any of my friends.

We appreciate your feedback on your stay. If you would take a moment to scroll down the page to a previous comment regarding our natural spring water you will see that the staining is a purely natural process and in no way is a result of our management or control of our pool. We have our customers safety in mind at all times and would not compromise in any way our cleaning and hygiene standards. I have noted your points on the others matters you have mentioned and taken the necessary action. However the lodge that you stayed in does have a sloping roof which does not allow the shower a great height, but we think this adds to the overall atmosphere of staying in an unconventional log cabin, within 44 acres of wonderfully preserved Yorkshire woodland.
Kind Regards

Had a great couple of days at this hotel, despite the weather snow snow and more snow. Beautiful setting including frozen lake. Staff very helpful and efficient, we had a lovely room with sliding doors looking out on to the lake. Food was quite special too, and a very good wine list. We hope to return in summer and enjoy the woodland walks around minus the snow. Also good proximity to the lovely little town of Otley and its numerous pubs!

We stayed for one night in March.
When we arrived the building looked beautiful, the snow on the ground and wooden structure made us think of Alpine retreats. We were greeted with a roaring fire and cosy decor. However, as we were travelling with a small baby we were disappointed that the cot we had ordered had been forgotten. We had to ring Reception twice to remind them to set one up, still no cot. When our daughter was due to go to bed we had to make a "firm" request. One arrived, but no sheets or bedding were provided for the cot without (yet again) a call to Reception. The bedroom was fine with nice view and all the facilities we needed. However the bathroom had obviously not had a thorough clean in a while .... Toothpaste was on the taps, hair in the plug hole and a disgusting black ring mark in the toilet that could easily have been removed with bleach.
Breakfast was very disappointing for the price. We had the full English, which arrived cold and had such a small piece of bacon and tiny sausage that we were left hungry. Very poor selection of cereals, no fresh fruit and stewed luke warm coffee. We did not believe this was worth the whopping £17.95 price tag as stated on the menu!
Now to the pool and spa - no facilities what so ever for a baby. I had to get her changed on the dirty crowded floor. No nappy change facilities or place to secure baby while you change. The pool itself was absolutely filthy.... Mouldy scrum was all over the tiles and the grates were rusty. The water was a very odd colour as was the hot tubs. We feel this was particularly disappointing as according to reviews on this site, we are certainly not the first to have pointed out how filthy the pool area is.
This hotel could be absolutely beautiful and a real luxury break, but unfortunately comes very short of the mark for the price.

Room Tip: Don't bring a baby or children as facilities are very poor. Don't use the pool facilities.

Thank you for your review. I have looked into your points and I must apologise for the cot not being present on your arrival and through subsequent requests, I have taken the necessary action to stop this happening again. We have looked into the pool facilities for changing children and I have installed a baby changing unit in the leisure club for future use, having no children myself it is not something I would think about but thank you for bringing it to my attention.
I have just explained comments regarding the water at Chevin with a previous customer and I would just like to reiterate that the water is a natural product completely safe and is tested constantly, the staining that is present is a purely natural event when the water comes into contact with the oxygen in the air. I hope this give a satisfactorily explanation to the staining in the pool and bathroom areas of the hotel.
Regards
The Management.
