“The best reason to go to Lerma”
Reviewed June 9, 2011

Efficient, friendly service, beautiful building, comfortable room with stunning view over the countryside. Very good breakfast. It's a shame that the plaza in front of the parador is effectively the town car park, but you can't have everything! The inner courtyard lounge/bar area is delightful - note that the garden is currently closed for works. Lerma itself is a bit limited in things to visit, but nearby Covarrubias is a treat.

Room Tip: Avoid a room overlooking the plaza car park

Stayed one night on route between Murcia and Santander to catch the Ferry. The drive was 6 hours and very easy. Cost €3.20 in tolls (amazing).

Booked a standard room for €99 through Paradors en Route, very efficient. Couldn't fault it. Good size bedroom and bathroom. Well furnished. Would have liked tea making in room but suppose that's very British.

Lerma is a lovely medieval town and we wandered around the walls and old town just following our noses.

Many local restaurants in the area but were overpriced and touristy.

Sumptuous breakfast which set us up for the day.

Outstanding value and great location. Staff a bit reserved.

The four towers of the Ducal Palace of the Lerma Parador rise above the skyline impressively as you approach this lovely little town. Finding the Parador is easy if you ignore the map. Exit the autoroute at gate 202, drive through the town gate and go straight ahead through the narrow streets until you get to the Plaza Mayor with the palace at the end. Parking in the square is ample and free.
The central courtyard has been roofed over making a wonderful atrium with dozens of seating clusters where you are waited on by attentive staff – we found all the staff here lovely. I noticed some other reviewers saying they are aloof. This is Spain, so they don’t gush across as your new best friend, and I’m glad of that, but we found them perfectly courteous and civil.
The rooms lead off the courtyard. Ours was on the side on the second floor with great views across the valley. A good size c20’ square and a well appointed twin-basin bathroom. As it was May we did not need the aircon so having the French windows open was a joy. You may want to express a preference for room – I would not be so keen on a room facing the square or on the ground floor. . I heard some people at breakfast commenting on the church bells ringing in the night. Not a problem for us but if you are chimophobic if might affect your room choice. As so often with these conversions the acoustics are not great – the hard surfaces do mean that door slammers and corridor criers share their joy with everyone around
Dining is in a cavernous vaulted refectory. The chef tries but the food is OK rather than great, with hearty regional dishes to explore and a sensible wine list. Breakfast is excellent and ron the third floor over a couple of rooms. If you are lucky you might be able to bag one of the few tables on the balcony.
Burgos is about half an hour away (more if you take the quiet country roads) where the cathedral is a “must see” for the extraordinary richness of the stonework and interior detailing.
We paid EU400 for two nights for two which included three course dinner (restricted menu, not wine). So when you take that into account plus breakfast and not having to pay parking fees is really very decent value.

This was meant to be a memorable stay and sadly it was but not for the right reasons. Our initial welcome was cool and we had to ask for our voucher for the' welcoming drink ' as we are members of the amigos club. The room was lovely and very comfortable and luxurious though we had to phone to ask for the missing bath towels. However the biggest disappointment of our stay was a very expensive dinner with wine. My husband had a plate full of poor quality black pudding with enough to feed an army, my asparagus and leeks were not fresh but tinned and covered in a poor sauce. The main course of steak with a strong cheese sauce was accompanied by a tiny piece of potato and what appeared to be tinned mushrooms. Finally the dessert of tiramasu did not taste homemade as described on the menu whilst the crepes (at additional cost) were precooked and partially re-heated by a flambe at the table. After staying six months in Spain, this was the worst and most expensive meal we had eaten.

First visit to a Parador & on arrival we were impressed. The hotel is a Palace literally. The room was beautifully furnished, spacious, clean with all the things you expect from a four star hotel. The reception staff a little aloof, the bar staff abrupt but the restaurant staff very pleasant. The breakfast buffet & dinner were good. Lerma is a beautiful little town well worth a stroll around.

It is over 15 years since I last stayed in a Parador, and, apparently, things haven't changed much: on check in, both my husband and I were asked for our documentation (took us back to days of Franco), we were taken to a room which was clean, but that is the only positive about it - very dim lighting, 1960's furniture, uncomfortable beds....years ago, this was the norm for Spanish hotels, but not now and not for the price! Public areas are glorious, as in most Paradores, but look at the rooms before checking in! Many better hotels in the area to stay in, and for less cost. Dinner was OK, but overpriced for what it was. Gave up before breakfast (room was so disheartening) so can't comment on that,

Stayed just one night en route Santander ferry to Southern Spain. ...an ideal stopover both in terms of location and quality of the hotel. An impressive building in a charming small town location only adds to the charm and comfort of this Parador. Excellent food in the restaurant and a magnificent buffet breakfast, all part of the pleasant experience of a stay here. Our room at the front of the hotel lacked nothing in style or comfort. The hotel staff could not have been more helpful. Secure carparking available under the hotel for an EU 10 charge.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The amazing ducal palace at Lerma, now a Parador, is located in the upper part of the city. The hotel features a central courtyard surrounded by lovely columned galleries. The elegant majesty of this palace from the era of the Hapsburgs and its lovely interiors, with beautifully designed lighting and decor, will make your stay an unforgettable experience. The Plaza Mayor (Main Square) is opposite the main facade of the palace. At night, the lights of the Parador make it look even more magnificent and stately. The medieval quarter, Arch, Carcel Bridge, San Blas Convent, Santo Domingo Monastery, Pasadizo del Duque (Duke's Passage) and former collegiate church of San Pedro are just some of the treasures you won't want to miss. The area around Lerma is well worth a visit. 22 Kilometers away is Covarrubias, a lovely village where San Cosme y San Damian Collegiate Church and Dona Sancha and Dona Urraca squares invite travelers to enjoy a leisurely visit, imagining that time has stood still in the Middle Ages and that little has changed since the year 987, when Count Fernan Gonzalez founded the town. About half an hour away by car is another treasure: the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos, a Romanesque jewel which has become a place of spiritual and artistic pilgrimage. It is also not far to beautiful Aranda de Duero, city of wine, monuments, history and culinary expertise. ... more   less
