“It's okay for an overnight stay”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

It's definitely not luxurious, but probably one of the best the town has to offer. It's clean, the room is big, and the location is good. It's an easy 10-15 minutes walk to the old town, or just a few dollars of cab ride. At night, the street close by is filled with BBQ stalls - so if you are adventurous and want a late night snack, you can head that way.

We find "big" is a common theme across China. You will find big lobbies, big rooms.. however, you also get a sense of wasted space.

The breakfast is meh at best... the bed is rock hard Chinese style.

So all in all, it's "okay".

After 4 hours driving the previous day, an overnight train trip and another four hours in the bus we were very very please to reach this hotel. Yes, we were also told it was the best in town and yes, it is certainly the largest. We had a simply enormous room which was well appointed and had a lovely view down the river. We were amazed to find the bathroom had a very large window into the bedroom and therefore a view of the outside world. We appreciated the space after the bus and especially after the tiny train sleeper with four people plus luggage squashed into it.
We were disappointed no wifi was available.
Breakfast was served in a 'basement' floor - open to the parking area and it was a rugby scrum which makes me a New Zealander. We were the only Europeans so the place was packed out with Chinese tourists. Our guide told us 20,000 visit every day during the peak season. the breakfast was Chinese style - hard boiled eggs, corn on the cob, steamed rolls, rice porridge. The breakfast on the second morning offered very little so our first stop was a to buy fruit to fill up on!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view down river

My family and I had pretty low expectations given the reviews for this hotel. Our expectations were further diminished after a trying 7-hour bus ride from Zhangjiajie and a dubious statement from the hotel staff that despite their lack of non-smoking rooms they had some sort of cleaning treatment that would neutralize the smoke odor. I'm happy to report that the hotel was decent and the room indeed did not smell of smoke. Also the room was fairly clean and well-appointed. The staff told us that the Phoenix Building (in which our room was located) was where the VIPs stayed and so maybe that made a difference. The Phoenix Building by the way was a pretty long walk from the lobby and we needed to go up several flights of stairs to get there. The beds were also rock-hard, as other reviewers have noted.

Room Tip: The Phoenix Building might have better rooms.

We book the hotel based on the reputation that it was the best in town. Well, driving around FengHuang, it was easy to see it was the most glitzy and biggest hotel around. We were there for two nights in November.

Inside was pretty pathetic. I hate to imagine what the other hotels in town were like if this was the best. But then again, FengHuang was pretty much a small town relatively unaccustomed to international tourists.

The room itself was pretty decent. There was free LAN internet but with slow and erratic connections. Bathroom was ok, but shower glass walls had gaps so the floor gets more than a bit flooded after a shower. In addition the shower head is at a weird fixed angle so that when you put on the shower, it sprays cold water all over the place and at the operator.

Room was relatively clean and the bed was comfortable. No complains here. There wasn't much in terms of security at the new block, but there didn't seem to be much in terms of loitering and non-guest strangers walking around.

Breakfast buffet was provided free, but was quite sad by international standards. I suppose it could be considered quite substantial for local tourists, accustomed to lots of greasy fried noodles in the morning. But don't expect cereal or anything that resembles a continental breakfast. Coffee is premixed in a large pot.

There wasn't much in terms of service. Although when we had problems turning on the TV, the staff were quite prompt in showing us the complexities of operating the remote control.

All in all, it was an OK experience if your expectations are not high. Ours weren't particularly high as all we required was a room to get back to after a day in the old village. Saving grace was that we had a room with a great view of the river.

By the way, the hotel is not walking distance to the old village. A taxi gets you there fairly quickly and cheaply - if you can speak Chinese.

Room Tip: Get a room in the new block at the back. A bit more to walk to breakfast and front lobby but is wort...

There was a chemical smell in our room. The bedding smelled the same too. We checked in late and were too tire to switch room. The bedskirt and carpet were stained. The bed was hard. Good thing we only stayed there for 1 night.

Reasonable( as there is indeed no better in town ) " run through " hotel, basically used by tourists for a 1 night stay after visiting the medieval old town. Spacious rooms, but overall a 3* rating is still rather generous. No bar, mini bar in the room available, only a tea room. The restaurant is indeed located outside of the hotel and is more like a " food factory " for Chinese people, who seem to appreciate the facilities and food, which we didn't, although familiar with Chinese cuisine in that region. No continental breakfast. As other comments already mentioned, you can as well sleep on the floor as the beds are rock hard !!!

If you are male answering the phone that rings at near midnight, a girl will ask you if you need a massage. I was asleep when I was awakened by this call on 17 Sept 2011 with sexual undertone. Checking out the next day, we were charged for the disposable toothbrushes. Breakfast were lousy with plastic bowls and wet chopsticks to wit.
