Owner description: The greatest of Jamaican great houses, the Rose Hall Great House has a story with all the elements of an engaging novel. Built in 1770 by John Palmer and his wife, it eventually became the residence of their grandnephew, John Rose Palmer. In 1820, Palmer married Annee, a beautiful but feisty English girl. Little did John know that his young wife possessed “black magic” powers that would eventually lead to his demise. During her reign as mistress of the plantation, Annee did away with two more husbands and countless lovers. “The White Witch of Rose Hall” has fascinated generations, and even today, there are those who claim to see Annee passing through the Great House. A candle-lit evening tour of the Rose Hall Great House is a must for visitors to Montego Bay. Your guided exploration of the former home of Jamaica’s White Witch, Annee Palmer, includes captivating and chilling stories of love, murder and mystery skillfully told by knowledgeable guides. You’re sure to feel goose bumps as these eerie tales come to life in this grand estate, where ghost sightings have been reported over the years. Tours also give historic insight into this grandest of Jamaican great houses, now beautifully restored with 18th-century decor and antiques. To conclude this fascinating adventure, you can visit the dungeon, now transformed into a tavern called Annee’s Pub. Many visitors find that the famous rum cocktail, known as “Witches Brew” helps banish the spirits of ghosts or black magic they sense still lingering in the mansion.

Make sure to go in the evening....spooky! We went through with a group of 16 and I got pretty scared at one point (I can't say or i will spoil the fun!) The tour guides really do a great job and it was most enjoyable!

“Beauty with a bloody past – see the musical if you can”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

We have visited the Great House twice before and are still enchanted by the beauty & story of the Great House & the ‘White Witch’ herself, Annie Palmer

Have read lots about the place and in my opinion it’s a great story – probably 60 percent true with the rest being added over time as all great stories are

The house itself is beautiful, set in beautiful landscaped gardens & I for one would love to wake up to that view of the gardens, neighbouring countryside & the blue Caribbean every morning – would never tire of that view

The staff who conduct the tours a pleasant & knowledgeable in respect of the house’s history – ours even sang a Johnny Cash (who owns a neighbouring property) song about Rose Hall at the end of the tour beside Annie Palmer’s grave

Things have changed for the better since we were last there – they now do ‘night tours’ and have a purpose built gift shop just before you reach the house

Although we haven’t done the night tour we’d love to do that at Halloween – now that would be great

What we did was the ‘White Witch Musical’ whilst on holiday – the particular performance we saw was for charity & cost US$60 each but this included transport, entrance to the Great House, a tour and the musical

The musical details the last few months/weeks of Annie Palmers life on the estate until her own murder and was quite funny in parts (although as a lover of the story, I personally would have liked a slightly more serious version of the story) but was still enjoyable in saying that

One thing I would suggest to the owners of Rose Hall & the production team for the musical – please either allow filming of the show or sell a DVD of it for the many tourists who take in this weekly Friday night event

“A nice short diversion from the resort”
Reviewed March 10, 2013 via mobile

We toured Rose Hall in early March 2013 while staying at the Hilton. It was only about 1/2 mile from the resort which was nice. We were they around 10:00 am and was finished by 12:00. This is a nice tour which is short enough to leave time to do other things. There is a lot of history here and the guides really knew their stuff. There are great views of the ocean and down the hillside. The gardens are quite pretty. It was amazing how cool it was inside the mansion as the sea breeze blew through the entire building. The gift shop must have been nice as my wife came out with a bag full of stuff. The inside of the mansion has some neat original and reproduction furniture pieces and the wall paper/cloth is cool.

“A Rose in a Garden of Beauty”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

Ten to fifteen minutes east of Mo Bay.
There is an entrance fee - not sure how much - I imagine $10 to $20 US per person.
The walking of the home and property is fairly easy even though there are quite a few stairs to navigate.
Went on a daylight tour ( nightime tours are available with all the ghostly theatrics ! ).
Went with JTL ( Jamaica Tours Limited )
Easy parking - guided tour with women in costume.
Description of the of the property and the morbid history behind it was very interesting.
Those who believe in ghosts etc would certainly enjoy this tour.
Built in the 17th century it is a wonderful property to visit with its natural and man made beauty.
A must see for tourists in the area.
