Owner description: The greatest of Jamaican great houses, the Rose Hall Great House has a story with all the elements of an engaging novel. Built in 1770 by John Palmer and his wife, it eventually became the residence of their grandnephew, John Rose Palmer. In 1820, Palmer married Annee, a beautiful but feisty English girl. Little did John know that his young wife possessed “black magic” powers that would eventually lead to his demise. During her reign as mistress of the plantation, Annee did away with two more husbands and countless lovers. “The White Witch of Rose Hall” has fascinated generations, and even today, there are those who claim to see Annee passing through the Great House. A candle-lit evening tour of the Rose Hall Great House is a must for visitors to Montego Bay. Your guided exploration of the former home of Jamaica’s White Witch, Annee Palmer, includes captivating and chilling stories of love, murder and mystery skillfully told by knowledgeable guides. You’re sure to feel goose bumps as these eerie tales come to life in this grand estate, where ghost sightings have been reported over the years. Tours also give historic insight into this grandest of Jamaican great houses, now beautifully restored with 18th-century decor and antiques. To conclude this fascinating adventure, you can visit the dungeon, now transformed into a tavern called Annee’s Pub. Many visitors find that the famous rum cocktail, known as “Witches Brew” helps banish the spirits of ghosts or black magic they sense still lingering in the mansion.

This is the former residence of Annee Palmer who, legend has it, killed 3 husbands and met an untimely death all in the house. It was restored in the 1960's by the same family that built the Ritz-Carlton. It was really cool to do this tour at nighttime. The house was dramatically, dimly lit, and it was beautiful. Our guide was a little hokey, and was not inclined to go off script and take questions. There were a few people milling about portraying ghosts, but they could have really done it up right. It's worth a look, though, especially at night.

I did the night trip to Rose Hall Great House on 01/10/11.

I was part of a small group of approximately 9 people which was an ideal size for this tour. The tour guide was very knowledgeable regarding the house and its history and could answer any questions asked.

Although the house was smaller than expected and very humid I loved the fact that there were various 'treats' to make you scream. I don't want to spoil them by letting fellow TA members know what they were other than to say the final one is the absolute best. What made the tour even scarier is that we were fortunate enough to have thunder, rain and lightning throughout the whole experience. The cells were the eeriest part of the trip but it is just awful how the slaves were treated at the house. Whistling to prove that you were not stealing food and drink is beyond imaginable.

There is the obligatory gift shop and I did buy a book that tells the entire Rose Hall story.

However, if you see an advert saying that you get an obligatory glass of 'Witches Brew' upon arrival please don't be fooled. This is incorrect and you have to pay. 3 small glasses of Witches Brew which is a rum punch costs $15. However, the pub within the house is very dark and old fashioned which I thought was fantastic. I could imagine it being a pub during Jack the Ripper's days in East London!

The Great House at Rose Hall in Montego Bay is a definite must for those visiting the area - especially if you are looking for something to do that is different. The "guides" take you on a tour of the great House where the infamous Annie "The White Witch" Palmer lived, killed, and died. Be prepared for an entertaining tour through this circa 1700's plantation, and hear the tales of how the White Witch grew her fortune, tortured her slaves, and finally was ended the result of a Love Triangle. If possible opt for the night tour which adds to the fun.

We arrived at the Great House around 7:00 PM in complete darkness. There are lights on inside the house but only a few torches outside (including at Annie's grave site). Our tour guide was very informative and answered many questions regarding the history, of which is very interesting. We were not rushed at all and spent approximately 1 1/2 hours inside of the house and on the grounds.

Be prepared for some visits from the "past residents" as they walk the halls with lanterns - some will jump out and scare the wits out of you from surprise.

The pictures that we took are proving to be very interesting. We used digital cameras and saw nothing out of the ordinary in the shots - until we got home and viewed them on a large monitor...

A must for the amateur "ghost hunter"! We had a blast!

I mean, if you have never been to a chateau, villa, hacienda, palace or plantation home then you will find something interesting at this place. Otherwise, save yourself the money and go get another beer :)
