We had a most relaxing stay at the Grand in early April. There were grand views of the Caribbean from the room and pool area. The food was fantastic and the presentations-even for the breakfast and lunch buffets- would rival many five star restaurants but more Jamaican/island fare would be nice. The room was really comfortable and nicely furnished. There were lots (~20) of clothes hangers and a docking station that would play and recharge our iPod but no wifi in the room (but who needs it when you’re seeking R&R). One of the nicest and well laid out hotel bathrooms ever. Be sure to ask your butler to run a romantic bath (bubbles, candles, rose pedals and champagne). Although a lot of the public spaces are grand in design, except for the view out the lobby, nothing would indicate you are in the tropics. More reggae music would help the ambiance both inside and out. (Our daughter just returned two weeks after we were there and said that is now the case.) We thought the swing on the balcony would be a good way to relax and enjoy the tropical paradise, but it rotates uncontrollably making it too dizzying to use. Overall a grand all-inclusive in a grand setting.

My husband & I went for our honeymoon! We were warmly greeted with hospitality & smiles. You feel so welcomed immediately. We dined at the Surf & Turf, the gourmet, & the buffet all were first class. When you visit the pool bar be sure to say a big hello to Santino & Nagile but save the warmest for Morris he will keep you laughing & serve the best dirty bananas ever!!! Be sure to tell him Drew & Jenny say "Hey-mon"!!

Reviewed April 21, 2009

My wife and I hadn’t traveled without our kids in over 10 years, so we searched extensively for the ‘perfect’ Caribbean escape, relying heavily on reviews from this site. We’d never tried an all-inclusive, and, even after choosing the Iberostar Grand Rose Hall for our 5-night getaway in early April, we were apprehensive about whether we made the right choice. But, not 20 minutes after our arrival, we both knew we had hit a home run!

As many reviews said, it’s still new, so A) it’s not close to full yet (at only about 15% capacity during our stay, and B) it’s not perfect yet (see ‘Room for Improvement’), but there’s so much to like, such as:

- Proximity to the airport: about 15 minutes (a big plus when time is so precious)

- A beautiful, clean resort inside and out. The public indoor spaces (lobby, piano bar, halls, theater, restaurants, cigar bar, game room, spa, etc.) are spacious and tastefully designed and decorated, and the grounds are beautifully landscaped and well maintained.

- Jamaican hospitality is pervasive and contagious: From the bellman’s greeting that immediately set the ‘relax, you’re on vacation’ mode, to the front desk’s warm welcome and quick and easy check-in, to the butler & concierge services, to the pool staff, to the activities team (always having fun), to the helpful and attentive wait staff, to the bartenders’ ongoing creativity and laughter, to the entertainers mingling with the audience after shows; everyone is always smiling, calling you by name, and looking to help you wherever they can.

- Nice touches: cool damp towels and cocktails during check-in; butler-drawn Jacuzzi bubble baths with candles and rose petals adorning the tub and pathways in your room (on request or even by surprise! A definite must!); unlimited sun block at the pool.

- Spacious well-appointed rooms: The only difference between Oceanview and Oceanfront rooms is the view), but we were happy we went for oceanfront as we enjoy hearing the waves hit the shore and having a full view up and down the beach. The room includes the most comfortable bed you’ll ever sleep on, an array of pillows (even a ‘menu’ for more pillows, if desired), dual closets, a step-down sitting area, an LCD TV with all the cable stations, a huge bathroom with dual vanities, jacuzzi tub, and glass shower, and outside, best of all, there’s a giant terrace/balcony with a cozy swing for two, a couch, a table, and the view of the crystal clear ocean, beach, and pool (the hotel faces northward, but we were fortunate to have a corner balcony that also faced westward so we were able to enjoy the sunsets from our balcony each night).

- Security: we always felt 100% safe on the grounds, though poverty exists just off the property. If you go off property, it’s a good idea to go with a guide (perhaps even one of the staff will take you). A round-trip cab to Montego Bay is $55 plus tip, and the driver will stay with you the whole time. Margaritaville was a fun place and the view across the bay is spectacular with mountains in the distance, but beyond that, I’d have rather stayed at the resort. My wife did enjoy bargaining with the countless sellers of crafts, souvenirs, etc., but we later realized you could get everything you wanted from the hotel stores and the makeshift marketplace just past the property’s edge near the water sports hut (don’t wait until the airport where prices are 5x for the same goods).

- Pool and beach: the beach is big, sandy, and inviting, with plenty of palm umbrellas and beach beds if desired. The ocean was all a sandy bottom to just beyond the rope-line, and the waves rolled in gently except for the last day when it was a bit rough. There’s plenty of space at the pool for relaxing with the small waterfalls dropping from one pool to the next, and the pool bar of course was terrific (Santino, Theodore, and Morris all were great - - try their ‘specials’, and don’t forget Allando’s coffee in the cigar bar)!

- Outstanding food: we tried all four restaurants (2 were open each night: Italian and Surf & Turf open one night, Japanese and Gourmet open the other). The lobster lasagna at the Italian restaurant was our favorite dish, and the Japanese restaurant was surprisingly very good (we had lower expectations other review read here). That said, all the restaurants, including the breakfast buffet (great OJ!) and the open-air lunch buffet (lobster every day!), were excellent and much better than you’d expect for an all-inclusive.

- No underlying pressure to tip: we had heard from friends that there is often a need to tip at all-inclusives to get good service (even though gratuities are supposed to be included). While we certainly tipped at most opportunities, we never felt like we had to tip, and didn’t get a negative reaction on those occasions when we didn’t tip. That said, we heard that staff members work six days a week and average only $80 every two weeks, so, when you consider that (assuming it’s true), it was easy to loosen up the wallet to help out such nice people.

- Entertainment: My words won’t do her justice, but LaToya is easily the best piano bar singer you’ll ever hear, and deserves to be singing to stadium audiences rather than the lucky few that heard her each night. She’s so good that she’ll have you shaking her head and dropping your jaw at her brilliance. It’s truly a privilege to listen to her sing. Make sure you’re at the bar every time she sings (her accompanist is fun to hear too). Also, the shows each night at 10pm were surprisingly good and worth a look. Mind you, they’re not Broadway shows, but they entertained. Each show is a mix of singing, dancing, colorful costumes, and culture, and all are well-choreographed with a different theme each night. You can also go to the Suites resort next door (connected by a hallway) where there’s another theater, a music bar with a band playing nightly, and a disco that’s open until 3am. During the day, there’s volleyball (with Lorenzo and Makari leading the fun).

- Three resorts: An underrated feature was that guests of the Grand resort have full access to the other two adjacent Iberostar resorts (the Suites resort is immediately next door, and the Beach resort is next to the Suites). While we didn’t use them much for food or drink, we enjoyed being able to explore them and liked just having them as an option. Guests at the other two resorts are not allowed to come to the Grand, and security keeps a good eye on this. These resorts have been open a bit longer than the Grand, and activity at both is more lively and loud (partly due to the kid-factor at those resorts).

Room for Improvement: All that said, as mentioned at the top, it’s not perfect yet. Because of the items listed below, the 5-star rating shown is really 4.5 stars from this perspective, but that was not an option on this site, and this resort is too good to be rated a 4-star hotel. Please understand that these items really didn’t diminish our enjoyment of the resort, but are definitely areas the hotel should consider improving, such as:

- The butler services: we were looking forward to this feature, and other guests touted how great their butler was, but our day-time butler was invisible from Saturday morning until Wednesday morning (four full days). While some of this could be attributed to the fact we were spending a lot of time at the pool and beach, there was still plenty of time in the mornings when our butler could have checked in on us. Shoes were even left to be shined twice, but it didn’t happen. The rose petal, candlelit baths were usually drawn by the night-time butler (though one was drawn by our day-time butler).

- The running toilet: we became experts in jiggling our toilet to keep It from running. Several hotel staff came to try to fix the problem at different times, but it couldn’t be fixed without major plumbing work. The hotel offered to change our room, but we decided that we’d rather put up with the problem than give up our corner balcony. The hotel did give us a $100 gift certificate to the spa in a gesture of goodwill.

- Restaurant lighting was too bright: Dim the lights! A bit more intimacy at dinner would have been nice.

- A small gym: This was a big surprise. We expected the gym to be as nice as the rest of the resort, but it was very tight with limited machines. It seems like the gym was an after-thought in the design of the resort.

- The pools were not heated, and the hot tub was not hot: The hot tub at the pool not being hot was just flat wrong, and the pool temperature wasn’t freezing, but wasn’t inviting either. We expected better. Plus, a bit nit-picky here, but they may have tried too hard on the design of the pool area. A simpler design would have been fine.

- The AC could be cooler: The maximum AC temp was barely cool enough. We were never hot or uncomfortable in our room, but I would have liked it to be a tad cooler.

- Exercise classes: There were classes each day, but such a nice resort should have professional instructors leading the way.

As said, even with the noted improvement items, we loved the Iberostar Grand and would go again in a heartbeat. It’s a great place to go and relax, have fun, rejuvenate, and be a couple again!

My husband and I needed a restful and relaxing vacation and we found that and more at the Iberostar Grand Rose Hall! We arrived in Jamica without our luggage due to weather problems in Atlanda, GA. Theresa, one of the many staff members at the resort, assisted us in obtaining our luggage from the airport and making sure it arrived in a timely manner. The resort is beautiful both inside and out. Our room was perfect, along with our view of the pools and beach. There was plenty of space in our room and it was elegantly decorated and designed. I was very impressed with the constant cleaning in and around the resort, but they were never "in the way". The service was top notch beginning with the Front Desk staff, the breakfast, lunch and dinner staff, the bartenders, maids and the pool/beach staff. I just wish I could remember everyone's names as they all deserve to be mentioned. The nightly entertainment was delightful. Our food was fabulous, the presentation perfect and the many interesting entrees were a joy to sample! No luxury was spared at this resort and the fact that there were no children under the age of 18 topped it off for us! We wanted to have fun and relax. No Problem, Mon! This was a vacation we will remember. When it came time to leave, we were both ready to go, only because our mission was accomplished, due to the perfect resort! We look forward to returning!

My wife and I travelled with another couple on our trip to this great resort. The check in area was amazing, and we were even more impressed with the room. Immaculately designed and decorated with exquisite service. The staff were the most hospitable of anywhere we have visited. Helpful, courteous, enthusiastic (usually a tough one for workers), and had a lot of personal pride. I would like to mention names of butlers, wait staff, concierges, and even managers but it would be unjust to just mention a few.

The food is hard to improve although we did not make it to the gourmet restaurant. The only difficulty was that the menus were hard to understand (not enough description) when planning where to eat. However, the meals were very hard to better at any fine dining restaurant in North America.
The beach, and poolside were great for rest and relaxation. It's hard to top the canopy beds available.
The gym was the best I have ever seen at a hotel or resort. The sauna was near the gym in the spa but I did not know it was available for anyone free of charge until day 4.
Try this resort, and you'll see how resort life should be. We can't wait to go back!!

My fiance and I took a last minute trip to Montego Bay from the cold on New York City. We booked with Cheapcaribbean.com , i highly recommend them, we used them in 07 to book a trip to punta cana, DR and have no problem using them.
Arrival at Aiport:
After getting off the plane you will pass customs, and security, baggage claim, all went fairly smoothly. you will then go into the transportaion hall where youll find which transfer you are booked with, we found ours which was through cheapcaribbean.com and they took us to our bus, it was big and air conditioned. IB is only 20 minutes from the airport, felt like less, we were there in no time!
Arrival at Hotel:
We arrived at the Suites hotel because we were originally booked there. When we got there they told us we had a free upgrade to the Grand Hotel. We then proceeded outside to a bellboy which drove us over the the Grand. Check in time at the Suites is 3PM, but at the Grand they had our room already ready for us (it was about 1:30 PM)
The bellboy walked us to our room, which is 5109 on the first floor. It was very clean and spacious. There is a long hallway going into the bedroom area, and in the hallway is the bathroom with his and her sinks. Walk in shower, Jacuzzi tub, and bathroom. I had no problems the entire trip with anything that has to do with the room. It was cleaned twice a night, they make down your bed before you go to slepp, the refrigarator was always well stocked with soda, liquor, beer, water, and juice.
Pool:
The pool is great, no complaints there either. There is an infinity pool, then two smaller pools, and a Jacuzzi in the middle. There is also a swim up bar. There is a desk where you can get sunscreen, lotion and large floatable rafts to put in the beach or pool water.
Food:
DELCIOUS! I stayed the at majestic colonial in punta cana in 07 and got sick from the food unfortunately. But here, I ate everything under the sun and it was soooo good!
The buffet is open for breakfest and they have yogurt, cereal, eggs made how you want, bacon, fresh fruit, fresh juice and more.
The beach buffet is open for lunch and there you can get from the buffet and/or a menu which has great lobster tails, fish of the day, vegetarian meal and more.
There are 4 a la carte restaurant: surf and turf, Italian, Japanese and gorumet; all of them were not open everyday due to low occupany (the resort wasn’t at all full when we were there)
The buffet was also closed oneday we tried to go for dinner and when we went to the front desk to ask she said it was cloed due to low occupancy so we went to the suites to eat at their buffet, which was excellent .
Only a la cartes we tried were Italian and surf and turf. I could have done with not going ot the Italian because the food portion was so small I was starving afterwards. My fiance also got a small portion of his meal. and the food wasn’t bad, but wasn’t great. I found the buffet food to be better.
The surf and turf I highly recommend, there food was very good. I recommend the appetizer with the seafood selection, it has a lot of seafood and very large portions…..clams, lobester, shrimp etc. I ordered the filet migon and it was juicy and good also.
Beach:
Crystal clear green water, very clean, we also found a lounge chair at the beach, we didn’t try to get abed on the beach but they looked empty and available every time we went down. You can also always find a lounger at the pool
Shows:
The shows are great very entertaining, no complaints there, I also saw the shows and the suites which were good
Disco:
Very nice, up to date music, they played music which is new here in the states so that was nice.
All in all I have no complaints about the grand, I cant think of 1 thing to complain about it. But I will say, it is very quiet, and I did not see a couple around my age (25). Everyone was older 40+. So it caters more to that age group
Suites hotel:
We spent a lot of our time in the suites hotel because they played music by the pool, did activities like dancing games, bingo games, etc.
It was hard to find a lounger by the pool though because everyday it was packed, and theyre were a million kids running around daily. It is defintley a family hotel. If we wanted a little more quiet time we walked back down to the Grand and right when you pass the middle point between to two you see how quiet the Grand gets. We did all the games at the Suites, and the daily water aerobics in the water which was really fun. We walked down to the beach one day to go to the dive shop, and you can tell the difference between all the hotels doing this, the IB Beach beach wasn’t as well kept as the Suites and Grand one was. It was stil nice, but not as nice as the Grand or Suites.
Activities
We walked to the dive shop and booked parasailing. It is 12 minutes , 120 if you are not paying cash, 108 if you are paying cash, US dollars. A lot of fun!
We also did the banana boat which is 20USD per person., Welllll worth it!! That was soooo much fun. We did about 20 minutes and couldn’t beat the price.
Serivce
Everyone was very nice and accommodating, they were always asking us just walking around how was everything, if there is anything they can do for us, etc.
Safety
I will also say, we felt very safe on the reosrt and walking along the beach. all the way at the end of the beach by rresort 1(beach resort) there is a craft shop along the beach that is off the property. we asked the guy at the dive shop if it is safe to go there, and he said yes but only at night. we went there about 3PM, and a lot of people were haggling us, but i did get some great deals, and i did notice there is a security guard from the IB that stands in the half way point between the resort side and stores side and was watching us when we went to the stores.
we alwways felt safe with no problem at all even at night we walked through the front of the resort with no problems, they have secutiry set up at different points in the hotel
Intenet....this was free inside a room near the lobby if anyone needed it during your stay
Souvenir Shop..they were a lot more priceier then the beach craft shop, but i expected that. they are in US dollars. for example, at the craft shops we got 3 shot glasses for $5USD, at the hotel shop one was 4 or 5 USD.

Just back from Montego Bay and love, love, love this place........best Easter ever. When we got there the grounds were FANTASTIC. The people who work there were great. From entrance to leaving......we never hear the word NO! When we first when to check in we received cold towels to cool us down and mimosas. They made sure our flights in were ok and that we were ok. Got checked in and went to eat immediately. Steaks and seafood as soon as we got there and drinks on the beach. The pools were great the beach was great also. When we finally checked in the room was OUTSTANDING. Man oh man, I have been to several top resorts but this place was like HEAVEN! Late nights we were hungry and called room service ordering things not even on the menu and we had them delivered with the favorite saying....NO PROBLEM! Would go back in a heartbeat! Thinking bout making this place my second residence.
