The George is situated in a beautiful position with beautiful gardens and an easy walk to parts of Hadrians Wall and Chesters Roman Fort. The hotel however ,despite parts being up -dated is rather "sad " in places and spoils the whole historic character. A tip, you need a map and compass to find your room but i suppose it builds your appetite for the really excellent meals. The food was so very good and the waiting staff were speedy and we must commend Anika and her team ,who were cheerful all the time even for our 6a.m breakfast as we had to leave by 7a.m! Our bathroom must have been the original from when Baden Powell used to stay .Brass taps (of which one was broken and gave such dangerous hot water with no warning. The Brass shower was awful fortunately it was warm weather so the cool shower i attempted to have was o.k.
The mattress were not too good and uncomfortable but it was the hard pillows i hated and despite a member of staff trying to find a softer pillow they could not find. The pool and the surrounding buildings need a make-over and a good paint.
Despite my grumbles we had an excellent holiday and would return to the hotel if we had the chance.

Room Tip: Upgrade your room and try and get a river view (well worth it).Be prepared for creeky floorboards in...

Stayed at this hotel in June fantastic location on the river banks rooms are adequate and clean ask for a river view, staff polite and efficient, warm welcome small issue which was resolved quickly about pillows. Food was excellent great value bar prices a little high but then it is a hotel.
Décor is pleasant maybe not everyone’s cup of tea but certainly ours. The swimming pool complex was good an old building but still an enjoyable experience. we will be back and cant believe the mixed reviews below its value for money this hotel with great staff and the garden on the river is such a great feature.

Room Tip: ask for river view

Stayed for 2 nights arrived after a stress free drive; always better driving north.
Had decided to give Northumberland a go for a change.
The Hotel is in a beuatiful lacation next to the North Tyne River with aa excellant view of the bridge, and well located for plenty of tourist attractions and walks
Arrived at the hotel, warm welcome by reception staff was given room number and location and told that this was one of the newly refurbished rooms.
Accessed the room by the staircase next to reception.
First impressions were good, seemed to have been painted recently, on closer inspection the finsih was quite poor with lots of paint splashes on the brass fittings in the bathroom, also the grouting was quite stained both on the floor and round the bath, the toilet seat had seen better days, but overall was acceptably clean.
Plenty of clean towels and the bed looked nice and fresh.
Unfortunately it was not very comfortable being very firm and the pillows quite hard, which may be a bonus to some but caused us to have a very unsettled night.
This coupled with very creaky floor outside our room, which sounded like the Romans where actually marching up and down outside our door.
We had booked a table for dinner at 7pm and were promply seated and our orders taken.
The food was of a mass catering type(limited choice for the half board we had booked) other options were available at an extra cost. The food arrived piping hot but was unfortunately quite bland and had obviously been standing on a hotplate.
i was quite glad that I hadn't upgraded as would ,I think been very disappointed by the quality.
On sunday night I had the roast beef which came with a very nice Yorkshire pudding but not much gravy, and I was not offered any extra, also the Horsradish which was quite pungent had been put on the plate half covering the beef, I am not a great fan of horseradish so this spoilt my meal somewhat. I would have had a pudding and was looking forward to the cheesecake but after sitting for some considerable time wating for my plate to be cleared I'm afraid I lost patience and got up and left. No one asked me if everything was ok.
In contrast breakfast was was very palatable and a good selection of options and was very enjoyable with vews of the river and local wildlife ( birds and a bunny).
Overall an enjoyable weekend, in slightly tired accommodation.
Did not use the spa as forgot out costumes

Room Tip: The river view is excellent

Thank you for your comment and we a very glad that you enjoyed your stay overall. However we apologise for the issues you encountered with your room, and as you quite rightly stated pillow aspect is opinion-orientated and we apologise the particulars supplied for your stay were not to your liking. Nevertheless, different pillow types are available upon request. Furthermore, due to the character of the building itself, some of the floorboards are naturally creaky; despite this the image of the Romans marching outside your room definitely adds to the Northumberland ambience! The restaurant has been complimented in past upon the variety and taste of the food we serve, however it is very much an opinion-based attribute and we, although endeavor to, cannot always meet the taste of every guest. In accordance to the surrounding grounds, the restaurant views and the pastoral setting, the restaurant is designed to be of a relaxed and calming atmosphere. Subsequently, time is given between courses to make your experience more enjoyable and relaxed. Your comment is very valuable to us and therefore we thank you once again for taking the time to complement our services and point out to us issues that will now be resolved.

This is a great Hotel for a stay for a few days, especially if you can get there room, which faces the bridge, (i.e. with a view) and also we paid for an ungrade, they only have one room of this kind, it obviously costs more, but if you are staying for a few days it is well worth it. The hotel is in a great position, by the river at Chollerford. It is ideal for Hadrians wall, and also for touring the North East of England, it is very popular as well for walkers etc.
The food is good for what you pay, service is excellent, Bar prices are fair for a Hotel, Breakfast is well prepared and served well.
Overall a Hotel which gives you a good feeling, and relaxes you which is what it is all about, is it not.

Having travelled by tain and taxi from Hexham station arrived at reception 7.00pm on the Friday evening. The check in went smoothly and was asked what time I would like to book a table for dinner. It was nice to be greeted in a polite and friendly manner.
On arrival in the room I have to say it passed my expectations. It was very spacious
with teaand coffee facilities and an excellent bathroom and T.V However the highlight was the
large bed which apart from Morgans in Swansea was the most comfy two nights sleep I have ever had.
As far as thr restaurant was concerned both evening meals were excellent and cooked to perfection the soup pea and ham soup piping hot and the chicken breast the best I have evet tasted which was down to the sauce. While you can up grade for a more expensive option on the menu after the first night found this unnecessary as all three cousres scored maximum marks. With regard to the breakfast again everything one could ever want except on the Sunday
when I ordered my favourite scrambled eggs they were done in custard fashion not bubbly.
The staff were second to none including reception and gave me directions for several walks.
Within a couple of miles you can go to Acomb a delightful village with three bars including the Sun Inn.There is a lovely riverside walk to Roman remains right near the hotel and also up the steep hill is Chesters Fort which has a Roman theme and sovenier shop.In the nearby Village is a delightful bar called the Crown ten minutes walk up the bank and Iam ashamed to say I won
the weekly dominoe card drawn on a Sat Night.Never got to use the Lesiure facilities in the hotel but had a good look and the pool looked great.
All in all a fantasic Friday to Sunday will definately be back next year.
Saving the best till last it was sitting on an excellent lawn over looking the river tyne with a pint of Lager views which will stay with me for ever.

It is fantastic for us to read such great comments and we are very glad the hotel met your expectations. We hope to see you again in the near future here at Chollerford; next time you visit make sure to put in a special request for your scrambled eggs to be cooked bubbly as we would be more than happy to serve it this way for you! In terms of the hotel itself, indeed much of the credit lends itself to the beautiful location and we are very pleased you could enjoy our pastoral setting and natural views.

Reviewed June 10, 2013

Three of us stayed at the George for one night during a walking holiday in March 2013. We chose the George as it used to belong to one of our party’s great-grandfathers, and I had a fond but distant memory of staying there 45 year ago with my grandparents.

I am afraid that we were all unimpressed. The atmosphere is dismal in the public areas with terrible interior design and poorly designed lighting. Parts of the public areas are very shabby. Our bedrooms were satisfactorily equipped for a hotel at this price level but, again, poorly lit.

Wi-Fi was not available in our bedrooms, contrary to what was implied in the advertising material and, more seriously, my room heating was barely functioning so I had to sleep nearly fully clothed.

My bathroom had ample hot water, but was very uninviting with tired grouting, rusty fittings and peeling paint.

We had dinner in the hotel restaurant. Of our three main courses, two were fine, being steak and lamb shank. The third, Cumberland sausage, was described by my friend as revolting and she could not eat it. The staff (mainly Eastern Europeans) were charming and tried to be helpful, but were chaotic. Over dinner and breakfast the next morning we had to remind staff about missing items six times. Dinner was not improved by piped music on a very short loop.

What I found unforgiveable was that, when checking out, I politely pointed out to the lady on reception that the Wi-Fi didn’t work and that my room heating was not working. Her response was a curt comment that Wi-Fi was only available in public areas. She completely ignored my comment about the room heating.

We will not be staying at the George when we return to complete our walk of Hadrian’s Wall next year and I will be very wary of booking into other hotels managed by Coast and Country.

Room Tip: In a different hotel!

We are sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations. At the time of your stay, we were encountering various network issues that ultimately resulted in a loss of Wi-Fi access across many areas of the hotel; limiting its access to communal areas of the establishment only. This was a technical fault and we do apologise. Upon inspection, there were no issues with your room heating system and all appeared to be of functional level; perhaps this was an intermittent fault. Furthermore, regarding the fittings within your bathroom, there was no evidence of rusting upon investigation. We are also sorry that the Cumberland sausage did not meet the standards of your friend, however although our food is claimed rather palatable by many a guest, we cannot meet the desires of every diner. Our restaurant team receives many positive comments upon the variety and taste of the food we serve. In addition to this, we also receive many complements upon the efficiency of our staff and therefore are baffled by your ‘chaotic’ perception. We would have appreciated you providing these comments upon discovery of the issue during your stay, as this way we could have rectified these issues if and when they arised. Thank you for your comments and ll your concerns have been taken into consideration.

We had stayed at The George in the winter and decided to return in the better weather and luckily the sun did shine for us.The hotel and gardens looked lovely as we drove over the bridge. We were swiftly checked in and the Scots girl on reception was very polite and friendly. We had a nice room although there was no lock on the bathroom door but that didn't bother us although a lack of glasses did. The next day 2 plastic ones appeared. The room was very clean and comfortable although the floor was very squeeky but it is a very old building.
We had breakfast both mornings and it was quickly served and well cooked and the buffet section whilst not vast was of good quality.
Dinner was good and other comments of being "school canteen" style somewhat baffled us, some people must go to very posh schools! The only problem we could see was there didn't seem to be any clear leadership amongst the waiting staff which meant there was a bit of a wait and some tables seemed to get missed. Things did improve when the bar man appeared and lent a hand, maybe they were just a bit short staffed those nights. The bar prices are a little on the high side however the afore mentioned bar man who was from Liverpool made up for it as he was very attentive and chatty and was always on the go.
We didn't make use of the leisure facilities although we did have a look at the pool and gym and it seemed to be ok as other guests were using it.
Both myself and my partner commented that the public toilets in the hotel really need refurbed gaffer tape on the floor in this day and age is just not on!
Over all we had a good stay at The George and will return, the staff are very good and hard working but there are numerous little cosmetic details that need rectified to make the George live up to the view that you see from the bridge.
It's time to spend a bit of money and get the paint brushes out!

Thank you for your comment and we are glad that your enjoyed your stay overall, firstly we apologise for the missing glasses within your room. Furthermore, we certainly agree with you that our restaurant is not ‘school canteen’ standard and are also baffled by this previous review. In terms of restaurant waiting times, the restaurant is designed to create a relaxed, stress-relieving atmosphere in which time is deliberately given between courses. This makes the dining experience more enjoyable and more valuable for the majority of guests, however we do acknowledge that everyone has different desires and hence we are sorry that you encountered unwanted delays. Upon inspection, there was no evidence of gaffer tape within the public toilets. It is entirely plausible that this tape was present on account of a temporary repair to a toilet fixing; however this has since been rectified. We are very glad to hear that you will return and visit the George once again in the future, and we hope that upon this occasion we can provide an even better and more enjoyable stay.
