Punakaiki Beach Hostel

I booked a bed in a 4-bed dorm for two nights here. The room was a decent size, but one annoying thing is that the bathrooms were one level down - through the living room. Quite a pain when your habit is to make a dash for it in your towel! There were no female only dorms available either. The kitchen area is a little small, as is the living area (it's all in the same room).

The owner makes some lovely bread though that is available to buy every morning. That's about the only thing you can buy in Punakaiki, as the only shop is in a bar and has very few things - not to mention their staff being rather rude, and that's a French talking ; )

The much-looked-forward-to hot tub was out of order, and seemed to have been for quite a while - very disappointing.

All in all, this place offers standard comfort in a lovely spot!

A disappointing stay after reading the nice reviews. Yes, it was on the beach, but our room was in a building about 1/2km from the main hostel and ocean. The building where we slept is for sale and is getting no love or attention. Out of toilet paper several times, no dish soap for days, one fry pan for the whole building, more beer bottles (empty) than clean dishes, water leaking down the hallway, thin walls, etc. No internet where we were, had to walk the 1/2km to get or see anything. Good points: affordable wifi ($10 flat fee with your laptop), can borrow host's torch to explore cavern up the road, close to pancake rocks, fresh bread every day (for a fee).

I found this place on the internet the day before I got there, It sounded like a good location so I took my chances and just turned up. The place is right on the beach (well there's a small gravel 'road'/path in between. A big house it has an elevated verandah that you can sit on and watch the waves crash onto the shore from. It's also protected so you can sit out there in all weathers.. just as well as the west coast is usually wet!

I was in a 4 bed 'share' room.. dorms are larger. Two sets of bunk beds. It was clean, had hooks and a cupboard and even a reading light clipped to the bedhead.. a big plus in my books.

The kitchen area was spacious and well equipped. The lounge area comfy with large glass sliding doors looking out to the verandah and sea. The toilets and showers downstairs were clean.

The garden was well kept and had space for tents, and there was a housebus which looked cool. Think it was available for hire? There was also a spa pool in the garden that was on between 4-9pm. It looked great and those in it seemed to enjoy the soak and the chat with others.

I was disappointed that you had to 'hire' a towel for $2. Having paid $29 to be in a 4 bed room (maybe I haven't backpacked enough recently to be in touch with pricing) I was annoyed at the thought of having to pay for a towel. When my family owned a backpackers the price included linen AND a towel!

Muffins are freshly made (daily?) and cost $2 and loaves of bread for $5. This is handy in a small place where there is a shortage of provisions in the nearby shop/cafe.

A great place to stay and I would highly recommend the location.

This backpackers is well named - it's right on the beach, and there are terrific views from the lounge area. Rooms are clean and comfy enough, and there's a nice big kitchen and lounge. It's a short walk to the Pancake Rocks and makes a good place to break up your journey down the west coast of the South Island. The owners are friendly and helpful, and will pick you up from the bus stop if you let them know in advance when you're arriving.
