We arrived at high tide and the Pancake Rocks were outstanding. I obtained the most beautiful photographs, You can judge by the pictures

It's a free attraction so you might as well make the stop! The pancake formations of the rocks are so interesting but you can only see the blow holes going around high tide-

best time to go is an hour before or an hour after high tide to see the blow holes

If you come to Punakaiki then you must do the walk around the rocks. Spectacular at any time, but when the tide is high it is amazing

You are not missing so much if you skipped this place. The rock formation is unique but not one of the seven wonders. If you had spare 15 minutes, you could stop and take some pictures before continuing your journey,

From the carpark opposite the street you do a nice 45 min walk until you come back to the carpark, which offers you stunning views not only to the pancake rocks, but also to the coast and the coastline. This walkway is not recommended for strollers/prams as it has some stairs in the later part, which are steep.
