“Cheap, delicious sushi”
Reviewed February 6, 2013

We visited this sushi shop for the first time at the Tesco lotus right near george town. We were immediately impressed by the cheap prices and good store layout. The Gurney plaza sushi was of extreme quality for Malaysia. However i was unimpressed by the bones left in the salmon and the uneven cutting of the nori rolls. This however can be easily overlooked for the prices charged.

“Efficient, consistently high quality”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

They recently increased their variety, and so I will leave it to you to order what you wish. But we are salmon sashmi monsters in our family, and cannot get enough of the velvety pink slabs!

So we were especially happy to see the red plate 1 for 1 promotion they are running right now. From 3pm to 6pm, you get 1 red plate worth RM5.99 free for every red plate ordered (up to 5 red plates free). Since you get 3 slices of sashimi for a red plate, you can get 30 slices of salmon sashimi for RM1 a slice!

Use the touch screen to order since the restaurant does not tend to load the conveyor belt with a lot of food. Fine by us since service is prompt. We have eaten at the TESCO Tanjung Tokong outlet since it opened in July 2011 and have really found the quality to be very consistent.

“Avoid oily, go healthy”
Reviewed November 29, 2012

I love Japanese food, but around the hotel I stayed, I could not find decent Japanese places. I happned to find Sakae-sushi in Tesco's building. The conveyer itself does not carry much varieties of sushi selections, so I picked some dishes from the menu. Tofu salad was simle and nice with the Japanese style creamy dressing. I also had the squid and the popular Salmon sashimi, which were not bad. In fact, I find it that this outlet is much better than one in Singapore.
It is a nice place to drop by if you want to opt for something light and healthy after having oily Penang food.
The service was bit slow, although I saw so many staff inside.

“Reliable sashimi and sushi”
Reviewed September 17, 2012

A decent place to tuck in sashimi and sushi. Singapore chain with another outlet in Tesco Tanjung Pinang. Service usually good, occasionally inconsistent with new staff. 2 to 6 pm buy 1, free 1 on red plates gives good value (sushi and sashimi only). Occasional lunch offers also good value. Annual embership worthwhile if staying in Penang.

“Techno-raunt... Restaurant of the future”
Reviewed July 12, 2012

This is a franchise, and they have several outlets in Penang. We visited the shop at Tesco´s in Tanjun Bungah and we loved it.

You have three ways you can order your food.
1. You can order from the attentive waiter via a menu, the old fashioned way
2. You can simply take your sushi from the conveyer belt as it passes your table
3. You can order via the large screen at your table.
We found option three to be a lot of fun. At first we just started playing with it, but it is very simple to operate, all items have clear pictures and prices, and magically appear at your table seconds after you order.

We were a bit shy to begin, and started by ordering two miso soups for RM2 each, at the same time taking a yummy plate of sushi off the conveyer belt. The color coded plates start with green at RM2 and go up to RM4, RM6 and RM8.

I can find nothing to complain of about this place. The seating is comfortable, staff are polite and attentive, the food is exquisite and it´s so clean you could eat off the floor.

Of course it´s going to be a bit more expensive than the usual Malay or Chinese fare at the food court where we normally dine. Our bill came to RM46.84 until they added the dreaded 10% service charge and 6% government tax which took the bill to RM54.35. I guess it is still quite reasonable considering the quality of the food and the overall experience. If you are budget minded you can still eat cheaply here by being more careful what you choose.

It´s a great dining experience and you should try it at least once.
