“Do not assume you'll find a boat to take you back!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2013 via mobile

Went to the park early afternoon, the hike to turtle beach took us 1 and 3/4 hours with a few stops to rest here and there (we are not very fit). We thought we could just take a boat back, however arrived on turtle beach and waited for 30 minutes with no boats in sight. With half an hour left before sunset we had to push ourselves to walk as fast as possible before it becomes too dark. The walk back took us 80 minutes, the last 30 minutes lit only by our mobile phone screens. We arrived at the park entrance completely exhausted and glad we came out alive!

“Turtle Beach--Best in Penang”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2013

The sand is coarse but soft here. There are plenty of large trees and covered seating areas with lots of shade, the location is kept pristine unlike Monkey Beach which is now much more commercialized with vendors and trash strewn about. There are toilets and showers and nice camping areas. Water can have as much as 10 feet visibility here Nike other parts of Penang.

From about March to August, the beach receives heavy swell from the Andaman Sea, and the surf might be high with strong riptides. But from September to February, it is often flat calm.

Blue water washes this area routinely, and there are fewer jellyfish, but bring some synthetic vinegar just in case. We saw many during our visit, and chose to stay in knee deep water. Still, a few in our group were stung.

The berm that allows the mecromitic lake to fill is destroyed by surge occasionally, and turtle season is short, but the station sometimes have hatched baby turtles and a nice exhibit for us when we visited. We saw a small tank of about 10 baby turtles during our visit, and the lake was drained.

The walk from the jetty/trail head took 45 minutes for our fittest, and about 90 minutes for our weakest. There is a substantial gradient, but it is very scenic and safe.

Bring plenty of water, lots of snacks, and enjoy the speedboat ride back that lasts about 20 minutes on calm days, 30 minutes when choppy. It costs about RM20-30 per person, or about RM50 for the boat. They often pause at the headland at the lighthouse to showcase turtle and crocodile rock.

Was especially impressed with the cleanliness, serenity and accessibility of this attractin. It reminded me a lot of Langkawi.

“A good walk & hike”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

We were greeted by a friendly guide under a umbrella outside the park entrance. She gave us all the details of they park & walks available. She also advised us of a boat ride option on reaching the other side of the park, which stops at monkey beach then brings you back to the entrance of the park. The entrance to the park is free, just need to sign in at the park entrance. And for a reasonable fee, about RM120-160 for a private boat, the boat pick up & ride can be arranged by the guide too. We took the medium walk/hike with our 2 year old. Some parts were pretty challenging, it took us about 2.5 hours. We also took the longer route to do the canopy walk, which was okay as it was just a loop & does not cross the jungle, it is an option at an cost of RM5 per person. We were glad we booked the boat as it was quite a walk & glad to take the boat back to the other side of the shore. All in it was a good adventure, bring lots of water & snacks to cool off & stop for a picnic or bite. Or have your picnic when you reach the shore on the other side!
Alternatively picnic on monkey beach on yiur way back, the boat drive will pick you up at a time you choose. Monkey beach is quite touristic & we did not see ant monkeys! However you can have a go on jetsky if you like for a fee of around RM70 for 15 minutes.

“Well worth the walk to see some unspoilt jungle.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2013

The national park is a protected area of virgin jungle that is a real treat to see. The wildlife is stunning and abundant, a great experience.

We trekked to the canopy walk first (5RM) which is enjoyable but not for those who suffer from vertigo! We then headed over to Turtle Beach. The path is easy to follow but quite steep in places and took 1hr 30mins each way. Take plenty of water (2 of us drank 5ltrs) as the humidity and heat mean you will lose a lot of moisture. The beach is fantastic, clean and unspoilt. Be warned that there is no where there to buy food or drink.

We then trekked back and caught a boat to Monkey Beach (40RM each return). Sadly Monkey Beach is very dirty with a lot of litter. Very dissapointing.

Worth the trip but go to turtle beach and take your litter home!

“My husband and sons loved this activity”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 18, 2013

Walked for three hours to Monkey Beach (which was a terrible disappointment as it was littered heavily and there was little there, so they were glad they had walked and not paid for a boat trip.)The jungle was a big draw for my family as unspoilt and exotic.
