you can hop into the ferry using your car or motorbike or just by walking as ample space for everyone. if you walk, the upper deck is yours to enjoy the view during the short rides

Do check the schedule. It is free if one leaving the island but chargeable embarking from the mainland. It is now under a new management hopefully there are improvements.

This is a scenic and economical way to reach the island of Penang. There are free shuttlebuses that take you from the bus stop or train station to the ferry terminal. For pedestrians the ferry costs 1.20RM from Butterworth to Georgetown and is free from Georgetown to Butterworth. The ferry takes 15 minutes and runs fairly regularly. There are toilets on the ferry (BYO toilet paper) and some seating. The ferry also takes cars, so the seats are around the edges of the ferry and you might need to squeeze in next to a car if you want a seat. The seats are flip seats so I was a bit nervous about my stuff sliding off the chair and falling into the water below. However it's not a long ride so you're probably better off just getting a nice vantage point and standing so you can full admire the view.

Easy to access by rapid bus, no need to pay to enjoy the ferry ride from penang to butterworth and most of all, enjoyed the wonderful scenery along the way crossing from and to butterworth. Ferry service starts early in the morning and we only wait like 10mins only after we missed the first one. Please put on some jacket if you decide to stand by or near the railing. It has plenty of seating areas, and if you bring your own vehicle you should enter from below level. Very recommended for family with young kids since it'll be exciting from them as it did to me!!

Limited seats available depending on which ferry you ride on. Not air-conditioned. Had to stand among the vehicles. Not an ideal service on rainy days. If you're riding Grab to the ferry terminal on the Georgetown side, you have to cross the overhead pedestrian bridge. No elevator/lift available. Not recommended for children/elderlies.

The trip took about 15-20 minutes. Free shuttle bus available to and from bus and train stations to the jetty on the Butterworth side. Recommended for solo travelers/backpackers. Low-cost option.

I would recommend that you take the ferry once either coming in or getting out of the island instead of taking the bridge both ways. This way you get the enjoy the old way of getting to the island before the bridge was build. Plus, you'll arrive straight into Georgetown and ready for the adventure. Btw, the cost of the ferry is the same with the toll for the bridge so will not be worse of. It's design in such a way that it is an alternative for people to either used the bridges or the ferry.

A must ride for the old world "charm" is a ride on the Penang Ferry - I am unsure where else in the world offers the equivalent. Put it on your bucket list to say that you have traveled on them

Very cheap ferry only 1,3 RM about 5000 rupiah from penang sentral to penang. And even it was free from penang to penang sentral. Take free bus from penang sentral to ferry. And vice versa. Only 20 minutes ride.

even if you arrive in Penang by another means its worth taking the ferry ride between Penang and Butterworth. The ferry goes every 15 minutes and cost 1.2 MYR, and its free 1 way. The trip takes about 15 minutes and you get some great views

Thank you for your review.. By the way, at the moment, during non-peak hours, the ferry runs every 20 minutes (not 15 minutes)..
