Owner description: Penang Mansion Restaurant Suffolk House is a stunning example of an Anglo-Indian garden house and Malaysia's only surviving Georgian Mansion, originally built in the early 1800s. For decades Suffolk House had a glittering career as the home of successive British Governors. The winner of the 2008 Award of Distinction in the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation this extensively and passionately restored mansion is now a "must visit" destination for everyone who comes to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town, Penang.

“Age Old History In A Modern World”
Reviewed February 3, 2013

There's no better way to glimpse the home of the Capt (Francis Light) responsible for founding the beautiful island of Penang than a trip down memory lane to Suffolk House. An example of colonial heritage at it's finest, the beautifully restored mansion proved to be a trip worth making, especially for those with a taste for history.

Touring SH was a breeze from start to finish. For those not familiar with its history, there's the informative guided tour to help you for a small and reasonable fee. SH's Manager Melanie Anthony is definitely your go-to person for all things SH related - friendly, approachable and she sure knows her stuff! Dealing with her was easy, pleasant and comfortable.

Definitely a place to pop by if you're ever in the neighborhood - or even if you live in Penang! Great job SH, two thumbs up!

“Suffolk house.”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

Difficult to locate and difficult to get to. Once there there is no real experience. An expensive rest and cafe. Not worth the effort.

“Don't bother”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

From their publicity, you get the impression that Suffolk house sits in an expansive estate, the reality is it's surrounded by high rises, a noisy school and very little else.

We went to visit the house and wanted a light lunch. Took ages to find anyone and finally found a waiter in a dirty uniform.

Told we could not have anything other than the al la carte, so opted for a drink on the terrace instead, expensive tasteless cocktails arrived and we left shortly afterwards (the waiter did return to say the chef could make a sandwich but this was limited to salmon).

Did not get to see around the house itself as could not find any member of staff.

“Nothing Much”
Reviewed November 30, 2012

Malaysian tourist deptt. are very good sellers. They sell every lousy ordinary place in their country to the unassuming naiive traveller. Most of such ,so called tourist attractions are business ventures.Suffolk house is also one of them.Just because some rich Britisher lived here once & he did so n so for Penang, they are under awe with his big bungalow. So,if you are keen to see an old English style bungalow renovated to house an expensive restaurant now,you can visit this place! Its your choice!

Dear N H. Thank you for your review. We are pleased to inform you that since the YKH group has taken over the management of Suffolk House we have refurbished the place in May 2016 to an even higher standard. However please note that this is not a museum but a restaurant and an events venue. The beautiful garden with its rain trees are still as beautiful as ever and the dining rooms have been given a facelift making it one of the most classy restaurants in Penang. The menu has been changed and it's now helmed by chef Mathijs Nanne from the Netherlands and as you can see from the latest reviews people are loving it. We hope that you will be back to visit us one of these days soon. Thank you.
