“Pleasant visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2013

We are a family of 4 travelling with a 15 and a 9 years old. We booked our excusion with Thextreme Tour from home before leaving for our trip to El Salvador. Our very nice and friendly guide Francisco brought us for a one day tour where we had visited some villages, markets, Cathedrals as long as the must see of the region such as the Chorros de la Calera.
We arrived in the afternoon at Juayua and took time to walk some of the streets of this very nice village.
After few visits we had to call a cab since a car can not be used on the very steep and rocky path that lead to the waterfall. We then took a Tic-Toc cab; a kind of scooter with a seat for two in the back. PRECAUTION: We did not paid our taxi since we wanted to have a transport for our way back and make sure the driver will pick us up after two hours. What he kindly did.... and we paid 2$ at the end of the ride.
There is a very smooth walk of apx 15 minutes to get to the waterfall. The scenic is wonderful, we stopped at few places for pictures. There is mountains far as the eye!
However once we got at the falls, the path to climb the waterfall is a lot more rudimentary; there is a ladder placed lateral on the path that we had to cross to reach the other side of a hole! Since I am inconvenienced by the vertigo .... no merci! I decided to wait down the fall.
Kids, husband and our guide had really great time swiming in the waterfall. With the vertigo, I was happy to stay down since the natural pool is a bit high...and anyway while they were having fun; I met really nice local persons.
Since we were there on a Sunday afternoon, a lot of local from El Salvador and Guetemala were there for a family picnic with kids. I really enjoy the time I spent there talking(trying) with them ! They offered me a place in the shadow to avoid sun burn, they even offered be food and drink! They where really fantastic and I will always keep good memories of this moment.

With that being said; If you have the chance to visit this lovely place, do not forget sun protection, water and water shoes . And be warned: .... you will meet a lot of very nice persons during this excursion both at the village and at the fall.
At any time we felt insecure during our tour and not more during the rest of our trip. El Salvador is a really nice and secur place to visit, do not hesitate to go out.
Thextrem Tour(info available via Face Book) can arrange very nice private tours for you in English or Spanish.
Enjoy!

“A must see!”

It is so beautiful! There is nothing like swimming in a waterfall. I also took the long seven waterfall hike and so other waterfalls close by.

“A nice waterfall, but you can find better ones in the vicinity...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2013

Apparently the most accessible and most touristy waterfall in the area, but definitely not the most picturesque. If you are a bit adventurous and can handle a moderate hike, try to explore other waterfalls with the local guide.
Swimming in Chorros de la Calera is a nice and refreshing experience: you won't find anything of that sort with the other waterfalls nearby, but the immediate waterfall vicinity is a bit disappointing. The artificial dam and quite a bit of litter are something that are distracting from the natural beauty. Other than that, it's definitely a great site to see once you're in the Juayua area!

These waterfalls should be in a movie. They are stunning. The water is a bit cold so be warned. Also it is a bit dangerous when walking around the main water fall. The rocks are slippery so be prepared!

The waterfalls are right outside town. Go here, you will not be disappointed! You can pay a tuc-tuc driver to get you there and back for a few bucks, do not pay until the return visit. The walk is probably 15-20 minutes from town. A must see!
