“Best experience in Central America”
Reviewed April 3, 2011

Starting in Panama City and working my way North over land to Yucatan, Mexico I spent plenty of nights in hostels... from the long list, a few emerge as favourites - Casa Mazeta in Juayua, El Salvador ranks number 1!
For whatever reason (perceived danger, etc) El Salvador seems to get unfortunately overlooked by many Central American backpackers. As a result of this, I had trouble ascertaining recommendations from fellow travellers met along my journey. I decided to head to Juayua without firm plans as to where to stay or what to do there. This ended up being one of the best decisions I made!
I ended up at Casa Mazeta a beautifully restored colonial home in the centre of town, run by Alex, an incredibly kind and welcoming host. The dorm room was very well maintained with huge lockers to store backpacks and valuables, free wifi internet as well as computer use, laundry facilities, flowering gardens to hang out in, hammocks to lounge in, access to kitchen facilities (but don't miss out on eating pupusas from Esmeralda!! - Alex can point you in the right direction)... basically the place has everything!
As I arrived midweek, not during Juayua's weekend food-fair, I was the only tourist to be found at Mazeta... and in town for that matter - a very unique and unforgettable experience.
Through Mazeta, I arranged a walking tour to the 7 waterfalls of the area with a local guide (Douglas), a highly recommended day trip. Alex was also a wealth of information in regards to the surrounding towns on La Ruta de Las Flores, sights to see, places to eat, etc. - all of which you can easily do on day trips by bus from Juayua.
At Casa Mazeta I felt like more than just a passing tourist - I got to experience real life in Juayua. Of all the places in Central America I visited and stayed, this is one I can say with absolute certainty that I will return to.

Room Tip: Solo and budget travellers - The dorms are great!

We were looking for a nice, quiet, modestly-priced place to chill during the start of our vacation in El Salvador. We found this and more in Casa Mazeta.

Apart from the self-explanatory YouTube video (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJc4_wxGYTU), there isn't much in the travel guides about Casa Mazeta. It opened its doors only a couple of years ago after all.

Casa Mazeta sits just a couple of blocks away from the main square in Juayua. It's a traditional house that the owner converted to the hostel that it is today. It is a cozy place that we were happy to call "home" for the 3 nights that we were in Juayua...a perfect first stop in El Salvador. Our host was warm, friendly and helpful.

Casa Mazeta has 2 dorm rooms and 2 spacious private rooms. We stayed in the private garden (double) room that had its own private bathroom and a terrace. Every morning, one could hear the cacophony of birdsongs (a pleasant way to welcome the day!).

There's a picturesque courtyard/garden where one can sit in the gazebo with bougainvilleas cascading from atop. It was ideal for cooling off, reading, or just chilling.

Free wi-fi access and the use of a computer was a bonus. (An even better bonus was learning about FIP radio and that we had the same tastes in music!)

We made use of the kitchen and fridge. There is a SuperSelecto (supermarket) just a couple of blocks away.

When we left, it was like saying goodbye to an old friend.
If you're sociable, interested in meeting other travellers and not so much into the noisy party hostel atmosphere, then I'd recommend Casa Mazeta.

This hostel is difficult to find on the Internet so we didn't know what to expect when we got here but, waw, what a wonderful discovery!
The hostel is run by a young Frenchman that opened the place 2 years ago. He renovated a traditional house with a lovely garden. There is a dorm with 6 beds and several private rooms too. Every room is really clean and decorated with a lot of taste.
There is a big living room where you can hang out, watch one of the many DVD's he has. The kitchen is perfect to cook yourself. You can use some spices and the fridge as well.
The service and kindness of the owner makes you really feel at home.
Dorm was at 7 dollar, privates from 20 dollar. Breakfast not included but a supermarket close by. The waterfalls are at a walking distance (20min) at the centre just around the corner. Another big plus: fast and good internet + pc and wifi!
Would definitely stay there again!
