“Hotel in a Time-warp”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2013

Decided to stay here for a change on our trip down to Southern Spain.(We normally stay about 10/15 minutes further south)
Our room was in the 2 storey block (Crossroads Motel style) at the back. The room had obviously just been cleaned as there was an overpowering smell of bleach and the floor was still wet when we arrived. The room was stuck in a 60/70's time warp - with very dark rustic furniture, painted feature brick wall and old CRT TV (which didn't work, but as we were only there for one night didn't matter). The bathroom area had an odd wooden framed and frosted glass partition !!.
Outside the restaurant there was an a la carte menu upon a lectern, which we browsed at length only to be told that the restaurant was closed on a Tuesday!.So we ate in the cafe bar from their Tapas/raciones menu. I'm sure I was overcharged for the beer - I questioned the barman but he fobbed me off saying it was a different size glass - but because of my limited spanish I wasn't confident enough to argue - we do have sufficient experience in Spain to know we were overcharged !.
The bed was very comfortable and we had a good night's sleep. The continental breakfast rivalled any such breakfast we've had anywhere - it was excellent.
If your budget is tight then this could be for you, but for not much more there's much better to be had just a little further on. No need to book in advance as there's no shortage of places to stay
As others have observed, it needs a lot of money throwing at it. Maybe the photos in the brochure are from it's heyday. We won't be staying here again.

Apparently this used to be a Tryp hotel. Quite frankly, I don't understand why they got rid of it. Maybe they were short of money do make this hotel a really great place. It won't be cheap but it will be well worth it. (Would someone like Mariott Courtyard or Accor's Mercure please listen?)
I'll explain my opinion: The hotel is in the perfect spot when travelling from Madrid down South, either direction. Just when it dawns on you that you won't make it to the coast today, it pops up right next to the motorway. It is built like a motel with lots of parking space close to the rooms. It has the feel of a bungalow holiday camp with a nice pool and barbecue area in the middle. Surprisingly, inside the courtyard the motor noise is less disturbing than you would expect. I could really see myself relaxing there after a day of driving, or, indeed, spending the day in the area. There is quite a few things you could do if you were interested in exploring inland Spain, or if you were a hunter, for that matter.
Unfortunately, the hotel is pretty old and dated. Yes, they made some cosmetic changes like painting the walls and refurbishing the reception area. They also seem to have installed new beds which are ok, for Spanish standards at least. What needs changing are the windows and walls to soundproof the whole place. I am not that interested in my neighbours bathroom and amorous activities, let alone their conversation and screaming and shouting of the children. They also need to invest in a proper aircon/heating system. It was very cold when we stayed there so most rooms had their heating going. This created heavy engine noises from different directions all night long. I guess it will be the same in summer when aircons are needed and believe me, it does get extremely hot here.
And then there is the bathroom! It is one thing to give it a nice retro feel and another to keep the old poor installations from 40 years ago.
They offer free wireless but it won't work everywhere and seemed slow. Breakfast was very basic and the whole breakfast/restaurant area was not very cozy. A professional interior designer would work wonders in this place which in my opinion has great potential. And whilst you are at it, hire a professional marketing team too and make this hotel really well known. After the renovation of course!

We usually stay further up the road at Diosbarrios but this time we we early so pressed on. We had seen the El Hidalgo for many years as we passed through so thought we would give it a try.

We were pleasantly surprised. The hotel is very dated and needs some money thrown at it but all in all the facilities are good for what it is. The rooms are, for the most part, little cottages with pleasant little gardens and driveways which makes it easy to load and offload the car. The rooms are huge and have a back doors opening on to the lawned swimming pool area and gardens. There are trees and shrubs everywhere which help to mask the road noise which is very audible from the main building. They also have a two storey bank of rooms and a curious circular one storey group of rooms [they must be a funny shape at the pointy end!]. I think the rooms could be very cold in the winter although there is a radiator in the room. The double bed was huge and very comfortable which was a relief after the very hard bed of the previous night in a French Campanile! The bathroom was clean and functional but also very dated but there was plenty of room to put things, the lighting was good and the hairdryer worked.

One the night we stayed, a Monday, the restaurant was closed which was disappointing so we ate in the cafe/bar. The choice is not huge, mainly burgers, sandwiches and tapas but cooked freshly to order. The staff are very nice and helpful.

We will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for a cottage well away from the road to avoid the constant road noise.

My husband and I drove through Spain in August and we stopped at the Hotel El Hidalgo. I think for a three star and at the price we paid I would expect more. The room was basic but clean, although they seem to use them as interconnecting rooms at times and the kids next door were very noisy till really late at night so you could not really sleep.

The great thing about this place was the bed!!!! Fantastic, really big.

The guy at the reception did not seem too happy to be there but overall not too bad.

The Hotel El Hidalgo was perfectly placed on the main road during a drive across Spain.
For the price it was a good value stop off point and was very comfortable if a little dated. The low level buildings surround a nice grassy pool area which I wanted to use at 8am but it did not open until 10 which was odd for August. The restauarant was packed at night and again in the morning and impossible to get a table so I never bothered. I would stay here longer than a night because it is literally in the middle of nowhere but it served my needs perfectly.

We have been stopping at this hotel for 2 or 3 years now. This year is the last. Last year the air conditioning baked us so much so that we stopped it and slept in turn with the door open. The third bed was a put u up. Ok last year as my grandson is quite small. This year it was not good enough for our daughter. However this year is another story....
The beds in the room were decidedly dodgy and swayed back and forth. When asked for a room change we were told that the beds were new. WELL they may have been new 20 years ago but not recently. We gave it a miss on the return. We found what looked like a more expensive hotel, it wasn't. The breakfast was very good. Last year the evening meal was awful and the bar service this year was pretty bad too.

Room Tip: choose another hotel

Our stay was marred by cold wet October weather. The external swimming pool, no doubt would be more inviting in the middle of summer. We stayed to break our journey off the motorway. The hotel is right beside the autoroute. Parking is convenient outside the entrance to each motel style room.

The hotel's restaurant, as is usual in Spain, opened late -- too late for our simple overnight break plans. There was a large family party using the restaurant which looked inviting. We eat in the bar which was noisy and cold. Service was surprisingly poor. When our food was ready, I was called to the bar to collect it. This was the first time during our stay in Spain that this occurred.

The rooms were basic but OK. There was a used food tray left outside our room door that remained throughout our stay.

We needed to plan our next day's travel and book accommodation with the help of the internet. But the connection was very slow, it took over an hour to do what should normally take 15 minutes. It spoiled the evening.

Perhaps it was the weather; perhaps it was the disappointing internet but we did not enjoy this stay and I do not believe we will return.
