“Should have booked and stayed longer!”
Reviewed February 12, 2010

Living in southern Spain we arranged to visit the Alhambra and then on to find snow in the Alpujarras. the Hotel was booked principally because of the very high quality of the customer reviews, we were not disappointed.
The cold nights made the scent and warmth of the log fire in the lounge special, very tasty home cooked food, too much for most of us! was wonderful, Wendy even had a birthday cake made for me, that is typical of the the care and attention we received, nothing was too much trouble.
Its a very interesting area to explore, on foot, on horse back or as in our case a 4 X 4, It was my 69 th birthday
I will certainly go back in the spring, there is so much to see and do there through out the changing seasons.

We didn’t have any plans to stay in this town, much less at this hotel, during our weeklong village-to-village walk in Las Alpujarras. On our third day, though, we realized we’d over-estimated the distance we could cover and arrived in Berchules in a heavy downpour and without a reservation. Fortunately, there were rooms available, but Wendy, the owner, explained with deep regret that they had only two single rooms available. Under our bedraggled circumstances, we reluctantly decided to take the single rooms.

It is a tribute to the wonderful atmosphere of the hotel that, despite the fact that we were on the back of the hotel, without the sweeping views and terraces that all the doubles have, we had a great time. The detailed information for walkers is terrific, the family owners are wonderfully helpful, and the food and drink are plentiful and great. Everything was reasonably priced.

Because we had single rooms, we ending up spending a lot of time in the public area of the hotel. There’s a fireplace, sofas, tables and chairs, as well as sunny, comfortable outside tables and chairs. We enjoyed meeting other travelers, almost all walkers or cyclists, and joined others for dinner one night.

Wendy and her family really went out of their way to ensure that we enjoyed ourselves. We ended up spending three nights there, made spectacular day hikes from their hotel, and could easily have spent a week there. We highly recommend the Hotel Los Berchules as a very comfortable hotel with exceptional service in an ideal location to explore the region.

From the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome by Wendy, Alejandro, Sammy the dog and all the staff. Nothing was ever too much trouble no matter what time you wanted anything. The rooms are spotless, the meals superb with some really delicious homemade preserves at breakfast. The whole hotel is very professionally run and everyone involved is so helpful. The company of the dog on walks is delightful! This hotel is an absolute gem and we were so impressed that already we have made plans for a return visit.

We booked the hotel the night before we arrived and Alejandro didn't even want our surname, such is the trust and old fashioned hospitality in this lovely, friendly, perfectly located hotel. We arrived to this mountain oasis under a blue sky and shining sun. We were welcomed warmely and after a quick beer and tapas in the village took the hotel's advice and went for an afternoon walk in the glorious Alpurraras mountains. Sammie the dog, who we adopted for the duration of our stay, made the walking even more enjoyable. Owner Wendy is the star attraction at this hotel: kind, warm, hospitable and knowledgeable, she really makes you feel at home. The food at dinner is delicious and we really couldn't have been happier here. We will be back for more stunning scenery and plates of overflowing lamb.

A relaxing few days in beautiful surroundings in this lovely family run hotel. Wonderful food - too much of it! A warm welcome, and nothing too much trouble for Alejandro, Wendy, and the rest of the staff. Sammi the dog kindly took us for a walk to the village, too! We thoroughly recommend this hotel, and look forward to our next visit.

Mark & I stayed at this hotel at the end of our weeks walking through the Alpujarras and had a thoroughly enjoyable two nights before driving down to the Costa del Sol.
Wendy & Alejandro were perfect hosts - Alejandro's cooking is fabulous! Like the couple in another review Wendy's dog Sammi came walking with us (along with her mate Ollie), which made the walking more enjoyable. We had left our hire car at Capilliera earlier in the week and were going to book a taxi to do the 1.5 - 2hrs to collect it, so that we would have it to depart the following day - well Alejandro told us about the twice daily bus which leaves at 5am(!) and 5pm to Capilliera for 3 euros each instead of about 60 euros. This saved us a small fortune and was fun going back by bus through the villages that we had walked through - thanks Alejandro - and hope to visit you again.

My wife and I have just returned from a most enjoyable week in Berchules. Yes, we were lucky with the weather - unbroken sunshine and fabulous walking weather for the whole week. But the hospitality and warm welcome from the hotel would have been the same in any event. Excellent food at breakfast and dinner, plentiful picnic lunches, helpful walking routes, clean rooms, lashings of hot water, etc. Nothing was too much trouble, the guests' enjoyment being the focus of this wonderful family run hotel. We will return!
