“Nice Excellent Located Hotel”
Reviewed July 19, 2009

Very nice hotel. Good location. Room excellent. Very pleasant friendly staff. A most enjoyable short stay. We have a holiday home in the South of France (about 3 hours from Sete) and this was our first visit to Sete and this part of the south. We found Sete charming with excellent good value sea food restaurants a lot cheaper than than the Cote D'Azur.Local people very friendly and welcoming. What more can I say! A good experience.

We've been staying in the Grand Hotel regularly over the last four years and our experience has been increasingly disappointing. The rooms we are given seem to get darker to the point where this year I had to ask for a stronger bulb so I could read. The WC mechanism broke at midnight after an evening we would prefer to forget, searching for a restaurant which would serve us after 9 p.m. August is definitely not the time to visit Sete as it has become more sleazy and crowded each year. Getting to it by car this year was a nightmare with roadworks - even the SatNat gave up. We regularly drive from Barcelona to tour around France in August (by necessity due to our holiday schedules) but we'll find somewhere else to stay for our first and last nights next year.

  • Liked — Situation, quaint building, convenient garage
  • Disliked — Dark room, broken WC, loud aircon. Broken furniture, paintwork - needs a good makeover.

Returning to this hotel after 25 years the world had changed but this hotel hadn't! The first room offered smelt like a gallouise ash tray with added essence of dog. On complaining an alternative room was offered that smelt OK but had absolutely no storage facility. How can you stay at The Grand Hotel and live out of a suit case? Complete misrepresentation of web site photographs.
Breakfast an insult at 9 Euros.
No atmosphere.
Checked out early.
This is the Grand Hotel because there is no competition.

Booked the Grand Hotel for 2 nights as we wanted to see the jousting in Sete (after seeing it on Rick Steins TV programme!). Picked it from the Trip Advisor reviews and were not disappointed so thank you to all who contributed reviews.

The plus points were the happy, smiling people on reception, location and parking. It was good to be greeted with a smile and they were very helpful with our various questions. The location is very good, only a short walk from the many restaurants and the port. We asked for recommendations for good restaurants, were given 4, we only had time to try 2 but they were excellent. The garage is invaluable as parking would be a nightmare if you didn't have the hotel garage which is very close to the hotel. You need to try and park outside the hotel to pop in and collect a code for the electronic gate to the garage. (Not easy but you can just about get in around the corner from the hotel). Only minus point was the breakfast, very poor, we would go outside for breakfast if we stayed again, such a shame as they have a lovely setting for breakfast.

The room was fine (we had a standard room as that was all that was available), tallest ceiling to a room we've ever had. Although the bed was described as a 'grand lit' it wasn't much more than a standard UK double but was comfortable. Enough room to move around the bed and plenty of storage. Bathroom was 'compact' but big enough, although it would have been nice to have got all of me in the bath! And it would have been nice to have a proper shower instead of a shower head from the bath. But all in all very good, lots of character, much nicer than a modern unfeeling room. Lovely to see the period furniture in the hotel, along with some contemporary artwork. We would definitely stay again.

We stayed for two nights in this really lovely hotel. Our room overlooked the canal - a must as the view is amazing. everything was perfect - the location and the staff were very helpful. The parking was a bonus as it can be difficult to find a parking space.

We had never visited Sete before and as always used Trip Advisor to select our hotel. I chose the Le Grand based on its position and the reviews.
We located the hotel and managed to park outside whilst unloading the baggage from the car, the reception was good and the receptionist very polite and spoke good English we were given our room key offered help but we declined and squeezed into the small lift. We came out onto a walkway surrounding a large covered courtyard that looked quite away down from the third floor. The passageway to the room was very thin and difficult to navigate with large bags and reminded me of the prison walkways in the film “Birdman of Alcatraz”
We got to our room, I had opted to pay extra for a large room which I think was a mistake. The room was one that was featured in their web site and was supposed to have an African theme. It certainly was large and so was the bathroom comfortable but quirky rather than luxurious. .
I went to move the car to the separate garage, this is located just a few meters from the hotel but because of the one way system required going round and joining the busy road again but managed to find the parking area and parked the car in a very secure parking area.
The hotel is located just a few minutes walk to the quayside which is lined with restaurants and a good shopping area. The restaurant in the hotel looked very good but we wanted something more “local”, and we found a wonderful restaurant very close to the fish market and the fish was delivered direct to the restaurant by a fisherman straight off his boat.
After the meal we returned to the hotel and had a very relaxing drink in the courtyard area which is very comfortable furnished and with wonderful sculptures. Service here was excellent. I ordered a Macchiato coffee which as usual was not a proper Macchiato but was exchanged with no fuss and the correct and excellent Macchiato was delivered
We had a a very good nights sleep the room was very quiet and wonder if this would be the same for those on the front with the view.
Breakfast was usual French but enjoyable in the surroundings of the enclosed courtyard, I think better value breakfast could be found in the 100’s of local cafés.
The Bill was as expected but on the expensive side at just below €200 for Bed and breakfast, and the large room not worth the extra. I would describe it as a adequate overnight stay, slightly expensive but probably the best in Sete

I stayed at Le Grand Hotel for four nights in January. The hotel was marvelous; an old and spacious building with lots of art and large plants in the open areas. My room had a balcony and faced the canals, which gave me a very nice view. The room was quiet and clean, and the only thing I missed was a stable wifi connection - there was free wifi, but it only worked part of the time. The hotel is located in an area with lots of bars and restaurants. A very nice hotel and highly recommended!
