“ideal for a site seeing in Vitré”
Reviewed July 31, 2012

Really ideal for site seeing in Vitré. Crentrally located but still very quiet. Small, but clean and friendly decorated rooms. We received the offer of a special rate without negotiation for two adjoining rooms for our family as no family room was available. Friendly service and a good, typical french breakfast with nothing missing for our taste. Some free parking available in front of the hotel or closed parking for a very reasonable fee. Very nice, small inner courtyard with some tables for breakfast.

Lovely little family run place in an ideal location for exploring the town and chateau. The hotel is in a small backstreet right under the walls of the chateau. The bedroom was large and airy with wonderful large windows which we left open at night due to the heat, but they did have blackout linings. The only problem with this hotel is that is an old property with a steep windy staircase, not good with a heavy case, but don't be put off at all. As we were travelling in a Morgan sports car a secure car park was important to us, no problem, Madame jumped in the car with my husband and directed him to the lockable car park just 2 minutes away. The hotel has no restaurant, it is a Salon du The, but we were recommended La Soupe aux Choux a few minutes walk away, a reasonably priced modern restaurant in an old building. We were lucky to get a table, booking would be advisable and the steak was superb.

We called on the recommendation of the tourist information bureau and were not disappointed. Offered a choice of two rooms, we took room 11 on the top floor with a view of the chateau towering above us. Room was clean and good standard for 2 star hotel. Access to this room was by a very steep spiral staircase, in this historic building, so not suitable to anyone with mobility problems. At night we were not disturbed by any noise. Everything you would wish to see or visit is within easy walking distance, including a wide variety of bars and restaurants. The owners were very friendly and helpful and, in the morning served a very good breakfast. Very good value for money!

Location is excellent, a few minutes walk into old town. The owners were very friendly and helpful. This is a very old property so everything is quite basic, our room had a bit of a musty smell, but the bathroom appeared to have been renovated not too long ago so it was fine. The sheets on the bed were crisp white linen totally immaculate. We did not have breakfast prefering to eat at one of the nearby cafes. If you are planning a short stay in Vitre I would say this hotel is OK, particularly as the rate is favourable.

On our return to Cherbourg we stayed overnight at Hotel de Chateau, which as its name suggests is overlooked by the Chateau.
We had room 7. which was very comfortable,, nice furnishings, excellent bathroom, easy chairs, and desk.
The welcome was very warm, and access to the city was out of the front door, into the medieval town. Parking is at the rear on a small road.
The hotel only provides breakfast, which was adequate, but not the greatest of choices, so evening diner was a problem. Vitre appeared to lack restaurants, and we found difficulty in alternatives other than crepes, or gallettes.
Vitre however was worth the visit, just a shame about the lack of places to eat.

We found the hotel via the tourist information centre in Vitre, and it was a last minute decision too. We were extremely satisfied with the onwers, the friendliness, the service, the location and the price - so, it is a totally recommended hotel by us.
Tip: choose to pay the extra few euros in order to get the most expensive room with a few of the chateau itself. The room ends up being more spacious, too.
overall, very good stay!

We booked for one night en-route back to Le Havre - the hotel is in a perfect location to explore the castle & streets of Vitre. The hotel & our room was perfectly clean & well presented, if a little dated in decor. The room was on the second floor with a small balcony & view of the castle - the rate was €60 for the night. We didn't have breakfast in the hotel (€8 per person) we ate at a small cafe in the centre of Vitre & had a feast of a breakfast at a fraction of the cost.
