The first impression we get as soon as we got in the hotel was that we were ripped off! The hotel just doesn’t live up to the environment “promised” by the website and expected of a hotel and spa facility.

It is not a 4-star hotel and spa facility. It’s more a regular 3-star hotel, needing some refurbishment and maintenance, with a modern spa added a couple of years back but already showing signs of absent maintenance.
There’s not outside pool which is a major loss as the view is incredible and there was plenty of room to add it to the outside spa area.

But the really disappointing aspect was the service. Inexperienced young employees not able to handle the guests’ requests and very unorganised at the restaurant. After a long wait, one of the four dishes was finally served but we had to wait 16 minutes until the rest of the dishes were served – and all were the dishes of the day so supposedly quicker than other requests! When we asked to speak to the person in charge for the restaurant service they said the person was not in the hotel and on the following day they said the hotel manager would be in touch but no one spoke to us.

We stayed there over a long weekend and in both days there were wedding banquets in the afternoon and it sure looked like restaurant employees were more focussed on it than on the hotel guests. The desserts at dinner time, clearly were the leftovers of the party – not the end of the world but not something acceptable for a 4-star hotel restaurant charging 16€/person plus drinks.

The location is incredible and the facilities could easily be improved to make this a 4-star hotel and spa ideal for a long weekend getaway of even a week of relaxed vacations. However, these will require significantly better staff and some improvements to the infra-structure.

Too bad the investment was made and is not being properly kept! Hopefully it will change before everything gets too damaged. Some additional investment in refurbishment and in high quality trained staff will for sure make this a great place to stay!

I was completely disappointed with the Alfândega da Fé Hotel & SPA. Despite the view, the architecture and the SPA – all great -, the restaurant, the cleanliness, the breakfast are all so poor….. I booked three nights at this hotel but I checked out after the first night. As far as I am aware the poor service and maintenance is due to the fact that the hotel is currently being managed by a municipal entity and will became private very soon. In the meanwhile no one cares about it. I will surely return when the ownership issue is solved.

It is worth staying in this hotel to benefit form the outside spa at 1100m high. I went in December, the temperature outside was of 2ºC and there I was with my wife in the outside jacuzzi with a 38ºC water. It was great to feel the contrasts, the superb view that in some moments we cold see and in some other moments we were completly surrounded by clouds not seeing anything.
The hotel itself is a nice hotel, nothing special, with several weeknesses: it is cold in the public areas and restaurant, service is slow even if if empployees are correct and kind. Some areas like the elevator one, could easily be painted giving a proper image of a 4* hotel.
It is worth to go there if you go for a different experience like the SPA and it's contrasts. Otherwise I'm sure there are other nicer places, mainly in winter where it is cold and cloudy up there.

The hotel is set at 1200m above sea level. We arrived at a temperature of 20C. Superb panaromic views. Next three mornings 3.5C, so be prepared! Wet and windy in the clouds.
No english spoken by any of the hotel staff, but all were very pleasant. Out of season so very quiet.and restful. Bedroom was comfortable and warm, but restaurant (good food) and public areas were rather chilly. Spacious lounge area had log fire and comfortable seating. All bedrooms have verandas with great views.
