“Good room, awful food.”
Reviewed March 12, 2012

The only redeeming factor of our stay in this hotel was the room. Having stayed in many towns in Germany, my wife and I were even impressed with the size and coziness of our double room (thin walls however) but the service and restaurant seriously need work. Both of our meals were borderline disgusting- but since the portions were very small we did not waste much food when we decided to finish our meal at another restaurant and hopefully get the taste out of our mouth. Service was definitely not motivated to make a positive impression as the hotel made every attempt to save money with the small servings. I will not be eating here again, even though the weeks meals are already paid for. From the consistent impression of two nights, I recommend that any service members/DA civilians avoid a stay in this hotel and request another ASAP due to the awful quality of the included meals, however if your dinner venue is your choice you will probably be satisfied with your room.

Staying here is like staying at your grandma's house. The furnishings/decor, though clean & well-maintained, are like taking a trip back to the 1980's...but in a rather charming & comfortable way. The staff are generally quite hospitable and helpful when it comes to travel tips for the area (the younger ones speak serviceable English and the older ones seemed at least patient enough to attempt communication in an English/Deutsch/pantomime mix). The kitchen closes at 2100 nightly; however, knowing that I wouldn't return from work until 2130, the night staff willingly accommodated us with light snacks and kept the bar open for us so we could polish off a few tasty local beers. Breakfast was the standard German set-up, with brötchen, cheeses, and fresh cold cuts (from the attached butcher shop)--eggs available on request.

Our main reason for staying at the Königsteiner Hof was business on the nearby military base at Vilseck. The base is an easy 15-20 minute drive, and the route is well-marked--just follow the signs to "Vilseck Military Community." Königstein itself is only 20km off the autobahn (A9), therefore conveniently reachable. The nearby town of Neuhaus an der Pegnitz has a Deutsche Bahn station with non-stop access to Nuremberg or Bayreuth--also convenient.

The "fitness room" was under renovation in February--it's a small room, just big enough for a small stair-stepper, a stationary bike, and a few exercise mats. If it hadn't been negative 20 degrees Celsius outside, I'm sure we would've taken advantage of the hotel's location & jogged outside through the quiet little town of Königstein instead.

Other features were "as advertised"--wireless internet is free, accessible in the guest rooms, and fast enough; satellite TV gives you around 30 channels, including BBC, CNN, Bloomberg, and MSNBC for English-speakers; and there is free parking in the lot behind the hotel.

Our only serious complaint was the total lack of soundproofing. Ordinary noise from other guest rooms was clearly audible--footsteps, furniture shuffling, window shades opening/closing, TV/conversations--as well as the creaks & groans of the old elevator. Worse was the sound of toilets flushing, showers running, and pee hitting the toilet water (!), all transmitted quite clearly via the common plumbing, night and day. We asked the manager for a fan to generate some white noise, but were told they didn't have any. Yikes...that might make the hotel rather uncomfortable in summer, as there was no indication that the rooms had air conditioning.

Overall, we had a comfortable stay and were happy with the customer service. The soundproofing issue definitely reduces our rating below "very good", but it was definitely better than just "average." If it was possible to give a "good" or 3.5 out of 5 rating on TripAdvisor, we would.

My husband and I stopped here only one night on the way to Frankfurt from Flucau as we wanted to stop in Regensburg en route. The hotel was very clean and the staff wecoming. We had a wonderful dinner in the hotel dining room ( they have thier own meat market attached) and the breakfast while not outstanding was good for a typical German breakfast. One of the best things about the room was the abundence of light! So many hotel rooms are lacking in this respect, which makes it almost impossible to read, but this room had many lamps and all with bright lights. Made it very easy to read and work on the computer etc. It was pretty easy to find location, right on the main street in the middle of the small town and not too far off the main highway. Parking was in a small lot behind the hotel and very secure.
