H10 Taburiente Playa
Reviewed October 18, 2012

Stayed five nights as part of a SAGA Canary Island tour. Although we arrived late evening the check-in was prompt and we went straight to the dining room where a meal was ready for us - most welcome.
Our room was a reasonable size with a view over the swimming pool and sea. By looking to the right it was possible to see the airport (more on this later). The shower was very poor and the shower head was in need of replacement and water leaked out around the side of the head There was, however, no problem with the water temperature. Cleanliness was satisfactory.

The dining room was spacious although at times noisy as trolley loads of plates etc.were taken across the tiled floors. The arrangement of the food sections was also odd - ie butter and jams/marmalades not next to the toasting machines. These machines were also not very efficient and the fresh bread had to be put through several times before it became brown. The food choice was reasonable but not exceptional. The wines were quite good and prices acceptable.

Staff were very friendly and helpful.

The hotel had a slightly run down appearance which was unfortunate. Carpets were very worn in places and the wall paper very battered in the corridors. Quite a spectacular waterfall with very large fish in the pond just outside the dining room.

Not a hotel for those nervous of aircraft. The runway is visible from some bedrooms and is around half a mile away. Fortunatly the airport is not very busy and most of the flights are local using turboprop aircraft which are able to turn out to sea soon after take-off and therefore do not fly over the hotel. However, a few jets operate flights from the UK, etc. and these are extremely low and noisy as they fly directly over the hotel gaining height. Nothing seemed to happen after around 10pm and therefore there was no disturbance during the night.

There is a bus into/out of town every 30 minutes and it runs until around midnight.

Overall a pleasent stay.

I wasn't sure what to expect after booking late
With a delayed flight we missed the proper evening meal
The staff stayed on and we managed to grab some food
The staff were friendly and the reception helpful
We couldn't get in our room the lock was faulty the reception sent a engineer up he got in and arranged a permanent repair the following morning sorted
The food was good and if you couldn't fill yourself up with what was on offer then you need to see a doctor
Loads of sunbeds no towels on a morning syndrome
Again situated on the end of the runway don't let this put you off
The poolside was so peaceful nice to not have tons of noises kids
Although the hotel is mainly older people SAGA louts as I call them I'm also one
Plenty Germans Dutch Spanish all very nice
We went to chill out and if that's what you need to do give a try.
I feel great now
We walked into the main town again 50 mins easy.
the small town is quite busy with small shops and coffee bars,
this is not a great shopping place
Then again I went rest not fight my way through big shopping complex 's
All thing considered my wife and I had a lovely weeks holiday we rested ate nice food And lazed by the pool watching the world go by
Remember all sun beds are hard so don't expect fully clouds to lay on plenty shaded areas and seats to sit on
The weather was superb sun shine every day factor 30 for the full week and I saw plenty hardened sunworkshipers who looked burnt with skin like some reptile it may be October be very careful
Sorry forgot one pillow on the bed wasn't enough we asked for some more back from the pool room cleaned and two new pillows air con worked a treat
We stayed in room 437 this looked over the mountains and ocean and towards the town and was lovely so all in all a lovely place to stay
It'quiet and peaceful no real entertainment in the hotel who cares grab a jack Daniels in one of the bars and listen to the locals laughing and supping local beer and talking about us poor buggers back home they certainly know how to chill out
If you decide to go do not pay for the transfer get a taxi
wish I had done that it's five mins from the airport I was told seven euros we payed fifty English pounds with the travel agents

Room Tip: Room 437 is situated on the fourth floor overlooking the ocean and towards the town and mountain vie...

Just back from a week here and it was a very relaxing HOT holiday - which we needed. The hotel's friendly staff were very good though obviously numbers have been cut back so they did work very hard. Room was as expected, food was typical H10 good and plentiful but was nearly the same every day! So did get boring. A great bus service outside the door. A very short hop from the airport (€7 taxi) and equally short distance into Santa Cruz where you can get a bus to anywhere. Dont be put off by the black beaches, we snorkled and there was loads to see! As many go out walking, plenty of sunbeds so no hassle there. ONE BIG DOWNSIDE if you want entertainment there is only a duo 4 evenings a week and they are dreadful! Very few liked them and everyone was commenting. All in all it was a good holiday and liked this unusual island

Room Tip: We had 412 which had a great view but I think all did!

To capture all the information regarding our recent stay I have broken my review into a number of sub heading to hopefully assist all who are interested.

Reception
On arrival at the hotel the reception area was spacious and clean and there was 2 staff on duty to check in approx. 20 people and this created a wait of about 15 to 20 minutes. During check in the staff were very attentive and explained about the hotels facilities and meal times etc. On completion of the process the location of your room was explained and you were left to your own devices to find the room with your luggage.

Finding your room
The hotel has 5 floors and we had requested a room on the top floor which was provided. There is 4 lifts in the reception area and all give access to all floors. The rooms are well signed on each floor and it was quite easy to find our way.

The room
The room was of adequate size with a large bed. Our room had a balcony which overlooked the pool and the sea. The room was a standard type hotel room and had a bath with shower. The bed was very hard but we found it easy so sleep on with no aches or pains the following morning. There were only 2 pillows on the bed and no extra ones in the room and although we did not request any more I suspect that if we had these would have been provided without question. Although the wardrobe was of adequate size there was only 8 coat hangers provided. There is a TV in the room but there were only 3 channels in English, although this was not a problem to us as we had not gone on holiday to watch TV. There was a fridge in the room and although it was empty it was useful to be able to put your own drinks in. The air conditioning in the room was quiet and effective. We found the room to be quiet at all times. The room fittings and furniture had seen better days and were ready for refurbishment.

The view
Our room on the top floor overlooked the pool and the sea and it faced directly into the sun rise. Looking to the right you could clearly see the end of the airport run way.

Cleanliness
I can say the both the room and the hotel was clean but it did not “sparkle” as the other H10 hotel that we have stayed in previously. The room was cleaned every day although we never saw any cleaners in any part of the hotel.

Meals
Meals were buffet style with a general selection for most tastes. We always go half board and we always look forward to the meals, however although the food was OK it was nothing special. Restocking of the food trays was quite slow and at times people were waiting with a selection of their food waiting for vegetables etc. The meat was the cheaper cuts and was quite fatty although it was cooked while you waited. The evening meal was served from 19.00 until 22.00pm and there were no restrictions on when you went or where you sat. From 1st October the hours of the restaurant for the dinner will be 18.30 until 21.30. Clearing of the dishes from tables was also slow as there were only a few waitresses on duty at any one time.
Breakfast had a selection of either “English” or “Continental” and was served from 07.00 until 10.00.

Location
The hotel is situated in Los Cancajos which has very few shops. There are a number of bars/restaurants out of the hotel and turn left up the main road, or turn right out of the hotel and head towards the beach. There is a path along the sea but from each end it is only 20 minutes at a very steady pace. Don’t expect shops to browse in during the evening as there are only the bars or the walk. The hotel is located approx. 1.5 km from the airport so there is aircraft coming in or leaving close to the hotel, but these are not constant and we did find them interesting rather than intrusive. The capital of the Island, Santa Cruz de La Palma is situated 3km away and there is a service bus that leaves directly across the road from the hotel and costs €1.60 per adult each way. We went into the capital one evening and were surprised to find the shops closed and the streets empty. When we returned in the day time we found that the shops are more for the locals rather than tourists and could therefore understand why the city shut down in the evening. Within approx. 50 yards from the hotel is a small Spar supermarket where you are able to purchase drinks, snacks, ice creams etc. at very reasonable prices.

Building work
Next door to our hotel is a sister H10 called Costa Salinas. During the latter part of our holiday builders moved in and started a refurbishment program and they were removing window frames and patio doors etc. The side of the building they are working on overlooks our hotels pool area and was at times noisy with hand power tools and hammering during the day. It is the buildings on the right had side of the photo over the pool. It is difficult to criticize this as I hope they will then continue with the Taburiente due to my earlier comments.

Pool area
There was an attendant on duty around the pool and towels are available free of charge from him by obtaining tickets at reception. The area was clean and there were plenty of sun beds that were available at any time of the day; however we found that parasols were extremely limited and there were times when you could get sunbeds but no parasol, which I then found uncomfortable in the heat of the sun.

Pool bar
We were not entitled to an evening meal on our last day, as you would expect, so we went for lunch in the hotels pool bar. This we found was the best meal we had had all week and was reasonably priced. It was cooked to order and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Entertainment
There was a duo performing a few nights per week but I cannot comment as we did not go and listen. In the bar they also played music concert videos of people like The Bee Gees, Celine Dion, and Tina Turner. If evening entertainment is an important part of your holiday then this may not be for you.

Summary
The Island is very quiet and not the destination for people looking for an active night life, none stop entertainment or for shopaholics. There is plenty of stunning scenery to visit and walk in which ranges from thick green forest, national parks or volcano peak walks to name just a few. There are plenty of organised walking trips around the island that suit all abilities, just take your walking equipment. After visiting the local tourist office their map lists the main hotels on the island and there are only 7 so therefore choice is very limited. All the locals that we came into contact with were very friendly and very proud of their island, although English is not spoken as widely as the other Canary Islands. We both enjoyed our week on the island for the peace, slow pace of life and the absolutely unbelievable countryside and we look forward to hopefully return back in the near future.

Room Tip: Top floor with a sea view

We have just returned from a Thomson holiday at this hotel and it certainly ticked all the boxes for us. I've read some of the not so positive reports on here and the only thing I can agree with those reviews is the fact that this hotel is a little on the 'tired' side but it is spotlessly clean so this can be forgiven. However, I do hope that the hotel renews their sunloungers over the winter months as they were terrible! Although in plenty supply, you had to sort through them to find the ones that weren't saggy and wouldn't try to fold in two as soon as you sat on them! We stayed in room 421 which was perfect as we had an excellent view of the mountains, sea/swimming pools and the runway! Don't let the fact that the runway/airport is so close as it really wasn't a problem noise wise as there are so few flights each day and the earliest wasn't until 9am and the latest around 8pm. We chose this hotel over the all inclusive at the other side of the island as we wanted to have somewhere else to be able to walk to and although the immediate resort of Los Cancajos is very low key with only a few bars/restaurants, we walked into Santa Cruz de la Palma in 50 minutes thanks to the very helpful map given by our Thomson rep, Jay who overall was knowledgeable, helpful and the Google earth maps he provided were excellent - thank you Jay! As for the hotel again, well the staff numbers are low but those that do have jobs there work their socks off, always with a smile and a 'hola'. There is no animation team (thank God!) not too many children - those that were there were well behaved (again, thank God!). The food is simple but there is a good choice and plenty of great salads and fish which suited us fine and you can choose where you want to sit in the dining room, again something that we prefer as there is nothing worse than being stuck at the same table for a week next to people you would rather not sit next to! There was a mixture of nationalities at the hotel and certainly no hooligan types. We thought the drinks prices in the hotel were reasonable - a decent bottle of white wine from La Palma (why don't they stock La Palma wines in UK supermarkets?) will set you back around 12 euros in the hotel restaurant whereas a nice glass of brandy after dinner will cost 3 euros. By the way, for the smokers amongst you don't bother buying your ciggies at the airport in the UK or on board the flight as they charge around 30 euros for 200 whereas my husband bought his 200 Marlboro Lights at the Spar supermarket near the hotel for 23 euros.
As for the island of La Palma, well we were enchanted by it. Having been to many of the other Canaries, this is nothing like them. It is not touristy at all and there are some places where you will need your Spanish phrase book but it all adds to the charm and experience of the island. We loved it and will go back at some stage in the future.

Please don't waste your money on transfers paid upfront in the UK. Taxi takes 5 mins to this and surrounding hotels. 7 euros max. Hotel itself is good but not 4 star at the moment. A refresh would serve it well. Still a very enjoyable stay though. Staff are excellent. Some very good food available close by, and beer at 1 euro for a large glass in Santa Cruz.Well 1 bar at least.

Room Tip: Plane spotters get a pool view and watch the inter island turboprops.
