We sepend about 8 days in this resort. The bungalows were perfect, the personnel extremely friendly and the service outstanding.
The restaurant food (à la carte) showed a large variety of dishes going from international cuisine to Philippino cuisine. I felt however that the breakfast buffet was not in line with overall quality of the location. (An improvement is certainly required)
De diving center is outstanding and I will comment separately about it

Room Tip: Choose the front beach bungalows (seahorse)

We stayed over a week in a "standard room with aircon. We did not have any problems with Mosquitoes until we stopped using the mosquito net over the bed. Well I had problems after removing the mosquito net but they never bit my wife. A meal with a drink is about $10USD very reasonable but it is a couple of dollars less next door. Also next door is better food selection. Eating at the resort is not bad but after 5 days it does get old. Most people island hop and only stay for a few days. We seen a lot of people come and go. Dive shop and crew are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The resort does have a few tour excursions you can take. Don't expect WiFi, if you do it is worse than dial up. Must be in lobby with no fan or breeze. If you have a special request you probably won't get it. I'm a handicap diver and advised the resort. I received the hut that was the farthest room away from the water and dive shop. They offered to change rooms after 5 days but it made no difference at that time. I was settled in.

Our overall stay (6 nights in "standard aircon" room) was fine. Just fine. Not incredible. Our main reason to choose this resort was because other resorts where fully booked, and because this resort had a big dive center. If we had to do it again, we would probably choose a cheaper place to stay, even if we had to walk a little for the dive center...

A few complaints (maybe the same complaints can be addressed to any other resort around there):

- No free WiFi in rooms, although it is advertised as such in Agoda. Sorry, but I'm the kind of person who selects my hotels by checking the presence of a free WiFi connection in rooms, and I feel really frustrated to be cheated like that. I am not asking for high-speed Internet, but I’d like to get what was advertised and what I paid for. The resort offers free WiFi around the reception area. Some room close-by may have enough signal strength to get a connection. Most rooms don't. We asked to change room, in vain… The signal strength around the restaurant is very weak too; hard to connect, easy to get disconnected...

- No complimentary bottles of water. In such a hot country... No shop around to buy water by yourself, and anyway you are asked not to bring any food / beverage from outside. One can only pick from the mini bar and get charged...

- No taxis around, and public transportation is not really an option if you carry more than a backpack. If you ask the resort to call a taxi, they will only accept to “arrange a transportation” for you, which costs twice the price of what you can negotiate with any taxi driver (for the same quality of service). Most customers are Westerners and may not feel it is expensive. While, I still think it’s not a friendly way to welcome or say goodbye to the guests...

We have stayed in Dauin several times before, so this area is familiar to us. This was, however, the first stay at the Pura Vida resort. We stayed a week in the "Standard" room with aircon, which is a bamboo and coconut nipa hut. It is very well built and well finished, but has no view on the ocean at all.
The first thing I noticed was the mosquito net around the bed. Given that the nipa hut isn't designed to keep anything smaller than your average chihuahua out, mosquitoes have no trouble getting into the room, and let me tell you, they are hungry. Despite the net, and mosquito repellent, we got bitten more than a dozen times over the course of the week's stay. I don't know how the bugs were getting in, but they did. If you are allergic to mosquitoes, or prefer not risk dengue fever, I suggest the premium rooms, which are solid construction of brick and glass. They also generally have ocean views, though not all units do - some have a pool view only.
The beds in the standard rooms are the usual foam-pad-on-bamboo-frame type; there are two single beds in the room, and not one larger bed frame. This leaves a crack between the two mattresses. The room has a TV with cable channels and remote control, a safe, two night stands, a couple of chairs with a side table, a mini-bar refrigerator, and a large wall-type aircon unit, which was more than adequate to keep the room cool, even in March's hot temperatures. The bathroom has a storage area with shelves on which to put clothing. There is a large covered patio area with a comfortable chair and a bench/bed on which to relax during the day (don't try it at night, there are too many mosquitoes).
Getting into the nipa hut requires negotiating three steps made of bamboo. If you have any difficulty walking or climbing stairs, these can be tricky, since they are rounded, uneven, and of open design (not solid). I would recommend the premium rooms in this case, since there are no steps.
The bathroom is adequate; not too large, but all the needed appliances are present. The water heater is mounted on the shower wall, so you control how hot you want the water. The shower head mount isn't useful except to hang up the hand-held shower head; if you turn on the water while the shower is on the wall, you will succeed in showering the ceiling, walls, and toilet with water. Our bathroom had a leaky sink faucet. We pointed out to management that it was wasting water, and they changed it the next day.
A couple of last notes on the room: some resorts give guests a free bottle of water every day, since you can't drink the tap water. This resort does not; they charge for each bottle you drink from the mini-bar. The cost is reasonable (P45), but I didn't expect the charge, so I was surprised. Also, there is quite a lot of motorcycle traffic on the road right behind our room, so it wasn't as quiet as the other resorts we've visited in the Dauin area. That's also potentially due to this being a bamboo hut, with no sound insulation.
The grounds of the resort are beautiful and immaculate, there is constant maintenance going on. The grounds crew doesn't use power equipment, only hand tools, to mow the grass and trim the trees. This keeps noise down. The pool isn't too large, but adequate given this is a beach resort, and the water is quite warm.
The diver's resources are excellent, very extensive (the resort has 5 boats, and ground vehicles for shore diving), and the dive masters are enthusiastic and knowledgeable. There is a dive equipment shop selling various accessories and repair parts.
The resort has an upstairs open-air restaurant, which is where breakfast buffet is served, and a beach restaurant and bar. We bought the room/breakfast package, so we had the buffet breakfast every morning. There wasn't a lot of variety in the offerings, so it was up to us to get creative with what we picked to eat. The dinner menu is extensive, and the food is excellent and well prepared. The staff tends to forget orders, though, there were several times we had to ask again for various things we'd ordered. The staff got defensive when we pointed out that they had forgotten something, and told us "no, you didn't order that" - sorry, wrong answer, what happened to "the customer is always right"? Anyway, this was a recurring issue. Food service time was adequate, though not really fast.
Where things got downright annoying was in the unexpected rules which weren't told to us ahead of time. Specifically, we had some guests for lunch and an afternoon swim. The first issue was that some of the guests' swim attire was "not proper" - can't wear nylon, can't wear cotton, can't wear t shirts; it really put a serious damper on the pleasure of the afternoon. Then, one of the staff loudly announced that all guests would have to pay 200 pesos to go swimming. Her tone was grating and unfriendly. After the 4 approved swimmers had their dip in the pool, and were heading back to our room to change and go home, we were stopped by yet another staff member, who told us that guests weren't allowed in our room, that they had to go use the guest shower room to change. This was quite challenging, since the guests had left their clothes in our room in the first place. How, I asked her, were we supposed to know these rules if we weren't advised of them upon check-in? She didn't have an answer to that, and our guests were allowed to change in our room. However, the next day, when we had a guest arrive (just to join us in an activity off the resort grounds), the guest was detained by the guard, and not allowed on the premises.

Overall, the facilities are decent enough, but the rules, and the way they were enforced by the staff, (and the mosquitoes) made the experience unpleasant. That's too bad: I would have liked to go back.

Room Tip: Don't get the standard room unless you love mosquitoes, and don't have guests over, they wil...

IIt was great time! Really. I had chosen a dive resort in the Philippines long time. I had red through many reviews on many web sites, and choose the resort, and didn't make a mistake.
The territory of the resort was well-groomed, our bungalow is made from bamboo wholly: from the roof to the floor (and the doors, and the bed, and the furniture except the shower :) ).
The resort staff was friendly and helpful. There was one problem with our meeting at the airport, but we rented a taxi and this saved our money.
The restaurant had not too rich choose of seafood dishes (it is strange) but all meat and fish food was delicious with good price.
And would like say "thanks" to the diving guys! They work was excellent! The dive masters guided us very professional (thanks Carlos and Peter), the boat and office teams (thanks Lee) worked without any comments.

Ive been to 5 stars hotels and no star hotels that treated me with exceptional guest service but to be discriminated in my own homeland is a shocking experience. 7 of us from Chicago and Manila wanted to go for a swim at Pura Vida Beach, place was beautiful although they have a lot of rules what we can and what we cant do.

We paid and went it to sit on a hut close to the beach but was asked to sit behind instead. we wondered why, because it was just us there and a few foreigners. I went back to the front desk and April the from the front desk told us that it is reserved for paying guest, which i told her we did pay you, She told us that it was reserved and that we should stay in a distant hut. she then said it was reserved for the house guest which they did not explain when we came in and 98% of thier house guest are foreigners.. did not want to argue we got our refund back and she has the guts to say come again, jokingly. I asked to speak for a manager but she couldnt give me anyone, anyone at all, i asked her to call anyone but instead handed me a piece of paper telling me that i should write it down instead.

i had a great 3 week vacation then this happened on my last couple days. You need to go back and learn customer relations and customer service. customer is always right and if say otherwise you shouldn't be in a hospitality business. Ive never felt so discriminated in my life more so in my own home land. what

It's surprising how well service can completely change your view on a resort/hotel. In Pura-Vida the resort is nice and the dive facilities are brilliant but the "standards and policies" of the staff just completely disrupt your stay.

It might sound stupid but ordering food and not being alowed to bring it to your room or getting your free breakfast being in a hurry and not alowed to take it out or saying you will pay for the extra bed/person in a room and being told that's against policy just completely stunts you and makes you feel stupid. It's got to the point where you no longer ask the curtosey question but instead go ahead and just do it.

The prices aren't cheap but you don't mind, it's just a shame that a perfectly decent resort has been so badly scarred that I think it would be better to stay in the brilliant resort next door 'el dorado', which we woul of moved to if it wasn't for the fact everything was paid for before we entered the door (you have to love philippine hotel standards on that one ;))

Either way, I recommend - if you are intending on venturing to this part of the world - going to 'El Dorado'.
