Mike's Dauin Beach Resort
Ranked #1 of 16 Hotels in Dauin
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed December 17, 2013

Mike's is special - small, friendly, relaxed, and easy. The rooms are great - inclusive water, kettle with tea/coffee. All rooms have a terrace or balcony for private space, and a drying rack. All details have been thought of. Food is great, especially the spicy burritos. Mike's family, and Lola the dog are a fun part of the resort. The beach is not white sand idyllic but perfect for walks and if you want to visit the other resorts along the beach for a beer. There is an excellent massage lady available, and kayaks to rent. A trip to the local market can be arranged, and caving/waterfall trips. Adventure Dive is the diving part of Mike's, and also run by him. The pool is perfect for OW courses (and a dip). The diving is varied and all boat diving - Mike has 2 boats and 3 or 4 great local guides so groups are never big. Dive equipment is good and the boat boys always on hand to help. All round a special place.

The resort is a perfectly sized, family run and well organised place with clean and comfortable rooms and upper balcony areas that offer good space for chilling out. The staff are all very friendly, and up for a laugh. There is a nice sized swimming pool to take a dip in, and good snorkelling just 5 minutes walk along the volcanic sand beach.
The resort is perfectly placed for diving the famous Apo Island with its super drift dives and large schools of Jacks (try the “washing machine” at Coconut Point which ends with thermals bubbling through the sand), and offers extraordinary hard and soft coral growth, many turtles and on one dive a humungous Moray eel. Mike’s is also bang in the middle of Dauin’s must see muck dives – with sea horses, tiny shrimps, strange little crabs and for me the stars of the show - a couple of resident Giant Frogfish. There’s a great boat trip to snorkel with whale sharks which we followed with a dive with reef sharks (black and white tips) off Sumilon Island. The boat crew are helpful and efficient and tea/coffee is offered during surface intervals and a filling lunch is available on-board on the 3 dive days. Mike is an energetic host - always ready for a chat and he works tirelessly to make sure his guests are happy, and this really makes for a genuinely laid back, no hassle atmosphere. It’s a great spot. We will be back!

Room Tip: Go for the Deluxe rooms (only two of them)...

That was my 7th trip to Philippines so I got a bit of experience when comes to hotels over there.
Mike's beach Resort its a place which i can easy recommend with the bottom of my hart.
This hotel got everything what divers and not divers need it. Good A/C plus fan, hot shower. many channels on Tv and cozy restaurant with cold beers what else do you need ?
Also good size swimming pool and fully equipped dive shop and big boats. Dive staff well trained and very helpful witch I could easy notice as an experienced diver. There is absolutely no problem with arrange dive schedule which suit u the best.
I also highly recommend whale sharks trip, amazing experience and not as bad as some green fanatics are saying. Go there and make you own opinion about it.
Mike is helpful guy and can advise you with many problems u can encounter in this magic country.
Only reason I gave 4 not 5 stars were some too bland (for my taste) meals from the kitchen. Chief should use more herbs and calamari was definitely to battered and oily :)
Its a good idea to speak directly to MIke about prices because rely only on Agoda can be misleading.

Room Tip: if u planning to drink a lot pick up ground floor rooms coz stairs upstarts seem to me bit steep :)

We found Mike's through TripAdvisor after reading the resort's great reviews. We generally prefer smaller places with more personalized service, and we were not disappointed. Mike and his whole staff are fantastic, you are treated like family from the moment you step onto the property. The dive boats are comfortable, and the guides know their stuff. We loved that the dive trips were smaller groups rather than a large "cattle boat" operation. And you can't forget about Lola, the resort's black lab mascot! She helped me so I didn't miss our dog so much! The only complaint that we have is that as Americans we had the snot beat out of us at Scrabble by Mike's wife JoeAnn, for whom English is her 3rd language! How embarassing! Haha!

We went here for lunch and because we were curious to see what it was like. We enjoyed some spicey tex mex food. Top marks for the restaurant, the friendly people and the beach. We also enjoyed patting the dog, Lola, but please Lola, cut down on the food - you are the only overweight dog I met in the Philippines :-)

We stayed at Mike's Resort in October 2013 and will go back every time I visit Dumaguete. My dive buddy and I are avid scuba divers but we did not want the 5-dives-a-day kind of vacation. Mike's Resort offers a relaxed dive schedule with a very experienced and excellent dive crew. You get spoiled with the service! And the dive boats are roomy and efficient.

My favorite dive sites are Apo Island (see the bubbles at Largahan), Dauin Sanctuary, and if you want to see underwater hot springs, go to Mainit.

Since the resort is not too big and only has a few rooms, you really feel like a houseguest. Lola the black retriever is very friendly and loves a belly rub. Wi-fi is free. Rooms are cleaned every day and come with a ceiling fan and an airconditioning unit. The staff is very accommodating and friendly. The restaurant offers a big selection of dishes -- including pretty good Mexican dishes. We were so happy with the cooking that we did not eat anywhere else the entire week.
Our meals averaged Php300.00 per person (the prices of the main dishes range from Php280.00 to Php 340.00). You can refill your water bottle at the restaurant for Php 25.00 per liter (this is great since it reduces the need to buy bottles of water).

The resort is in a quieter area of Dauin -- i.e. you have to walk a bit to reach the highway to take public transportation. The gray-sand beach is also quiet with little commercial activities. No one bothers you when you take the long walks on the beach.

Ms Joy at reception is very good at setting up any tours or private transportation. She arranged for our excursion to Oslob to snorkel with whalesharks and to the waterfalls and hot springs. It was an excellent way to spend a non-diving day.

Dumaguete is a university town so there isnt much to see. But there are excellent seafood restaurants along the seawall. For those with a sweet tooth, visit Sans Rival bakeshop and try the silvanas.

Room Tip: Choose a second-floor room. Warning: the neighbor keeps chickens that start crowing at 2AM so may b...
