If you have the big room on the first or second floor with two large windows, one facing the river - you have a great room. (12USD)

Our room was twin bedded, amazing view, large size, a bit of furniture and the bathroom was also fine. Thanks to the big windows there was a good air circulation, so no AC is needed.
I also checked a room at the back (10USD) and found that not appealing. No real window and due to that it smelled a bit damp.

Owner is also friendly.
Just in front of hte hotel there are some lovely places to eat sea food. Every evening they put chairs and tables directly next ot the river and you can get fresh squit or fish.
You can rent motorbikes in the hotel to go to Phong Nha national Park. Seems to be the cheapest place in town to rent them (150.000) - I asked everywhere but they all wanted to have at least 200.000Dong

Location - is about 3km from the train station, and 1km from the beautiful beach.

Room Tip: Ask for the front room with sea view and 2 windows. Amazing rooms. The ones in the back are horrible...

Our room was a 3 bed and it was around $100, 000 dong per person. The owner is extremely nice and helpful(although his english isn't the best)! He even offered to make us breakfast before our tour of the near by national park. The room was pretty spacious and came with AC and a lovely hot shower. The rooms are pretty decently clean, I would have given a 5 on cleanliness but there was a bit of sand or dirt on the floor.. although it isn't visible, it just gets stuck to your feet if wet. I highly recommend this hotel for budget travelers or backpackers. Everything you could want to fit yoir basic needs!

Dong Hoi is a pretty little seaside city. The locals here are so friendly. The owner of this hotel doesn't speak much English but is very helpful. The room was clean and basic but has everything you need. Ask for an upstairs room with a view of the sea. It was great to wake up with the sun pouring in through the large windows and hearing the waves roll in.

There aren't many tourists in Dong Hoi- most seem to be just passing through. As a result, most of the population doesn't quite seem to know what to do when a tourist shows up in their store or restaurant. And certainly don't expect the simplicity and comfort that comes from areas that are a little more touristed.

With that said, if you chose Dong Hoi as a base (say, if you go to see the caves, which are certainly a must see), Mau Hong is an excellent hotel. We were given the top floor room at the front of the building, so we had a huge balcony and two of the four walls were all windows; we had excellent views of the river, ocean and fishing boats. The room was large and very clean. The bathroom was likewise large and clean, and had plenty of hot water. My only complaint is that we were not given a remote to control the air conditioner- it was either on or off and therefore made finding a comfortable temperature a little difficult and was solely achieved through proper clothing. Even so, this was all a great value at only $10 a night.

The owner speaks very little English, but is friendly and patient so everyone can eventually get their point across. He has an automatic scooter for rent at $10 per day. Though after figuring out that my husband was more comfortable driving a standard, he let us take his personal scooter. He outfitted us with multiple maps and good directions so we could drive ourselves to the caves. All in all, Mau Hong was an excellent choice.

Mau Hong is located in a place that is ideal for those who wish to visit the beautiful beach, and also is within walking distance of the main 'town area'. Dong Hoi is very quiet and small itself and I found the area right around the hotel was just what I wanted. The room I was given was huge and had an amazing view (especially at sunrise - see my pic from just outside the hotel) and the price, reasonable. Mr Mau is very smiley and friendly, though his English is quite weak - so bring a dictionary or learn some Vietnamese! I rented a motorbike from him and drove 80km to Vinh Moc tunnels for the day. He charges around $5 for the day.
Early evening is good outside the hotel, lots of little street cafes open up, all selling the freshest seafood for a very small price, and of course beer!

Room Tip: Just ask for a room with a view, you owon't be disappointed

This is a typical backpackers guesthouse. Nothing fancy, but the rooms are spacious. Try to get a room on the frontside for the nice view over the lively fishersharbour. The room at the back we had first had rockhard matresses, the rooms in the front where a lot better. The innkeeper is a friendly and helpfull guy who speaks a little English. We paid 250000 for a tripple room. Breakfast was simple, some baquette and egg with strong tea or nescafee coffee.

When you have a day off you could visit the Sunspa resort where you can spend a day for just 7 dollar and use the pool and beach facillities. Very luxuruous. For eating we tried some western food in the teenager joint in town (as mentioned in the lonely planet) but we got very minimal portions. We also tried a Vietnamese restaurant recommended by the innkeeper but it had very bland food and an unfriendly waitress. We heard good news about the seafood on the beach though.
