Owner description: Wuzhen, a 1300-year-old water town on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, is a national 5A scenic area and one of China's top ten historical & cultural towns. Located on the Hangzhou-Jiaxing-Huzhou Plain in northern Zhejiang Province, it is at the center of the golden triangle consisting of Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou. Wuzhen can be easily accessed through a number of expressways and national highways. In 2001, Wuzhen was named as a candidate for UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage List. At the end of 2006, it was included in the revised List of China's Candidates for UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. In 2009, Wuzhen was named as the first PATA eco-tourism destination in Mainland China. The ancient Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal flows through the town, which is divided by waterways into four areas, Dongzha, Xizha, Nanzha, and Beizha. Since its foundation in 872 A.D., Wuzhen has never changed its name, location, waterways, or way of life. Traditional buildings remain intact today even after hundreds years of weathering.

Wuzhen is about 160kms from Shanghai and can be easily reached by bus departing from Shanghai South Station (49rmb) in 90 minutes. Buses were in good condition.
The tourist area is made up of 2 separate areas, Xizha (west) and Dongzha (east)- we visited the Xizha. The town is very relaxing and well maintained, restroom facilities were top class with hot water and even resting areas. Although the buildings are not original, they can give you a very good idea as to how was it was thousands of years ago. There a series of displays and temples inside the visit area that are interesting, in particular one exhibition about foot binding for women.
There is plenty of selection of foods to eat including western food, bakeries, and even bars with live music. You can also chose to stay overnight in one of the many hotels and hostels there.
It was a great experience for us as a one-day trip and we look forward to going back and stay one night there.

I guess some Western tourists may feel exciting. However, the town is well commercialized already. There are various western restaurants and pubs here. It is no longer not a real historical Chinese town. Goods sold here are overpriced and also are not acutally manufacured in the town.

Fewer and fewer locals actually live inside the town. Intead, there are more and more hostels and hotels.

It is a long drive from Shanghai but worth it. The town has a very nice atmosphere and the buildings very interesting especially the fact that people are still living and working in all the buildings. There are plenty of restaurants and nice things to buy. Take a trip in a boat round the town....very relaxing. Really recommend this as a day out and a real change from the city. When we went there were plenty of local visitors but very few westerners.
