“An overnight homestay - to better savour the ancient water village”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 7, 2012

In Wuzhen, there are two scenic areas, Dong (East) Zha and Xi (West) Zha. This trip, we chose to stay overnight in Xizha. There are difference classes of accommodation in Xizha, all centrally managed by the village co-operative. But even the most affordable homestay class is slightly more expensive compared with the accommodation outside the scenic areas. Despite this, we decided to try out the unique experience and I must say it is good value for money. We chose a homestay twin sharing room (not waterfront) and it costed us RMB422 on a Friday. These homestay inns are actually converted from old houses, equipped with modern day facilities (yes, they have high speed free WIFI) and comfort while retaining the age old external façade. The rooms are on the second floor of an old house, so you have to climb up a flight of stairs. The rooms are very clean and new. One thing to note, since all the inns are centrally managed, you do not get to choose which inn to stay in (it's similar to the concept of checking into the hotel where you choose your room type and the hotel will allocate you your "room number"). Of course, if it's off-peak, you can still try asking, their service attitude is quite good, you could get lucky. Upon arriving at the entrance of the Xizha Scenic Area, it's designed as though you have arrived at a hotel lobby. Get yourself checked in, then you get your room key, they can arrange for your luggage to be sent to your inn. Those staying further into the village, they even provide complimentary buggy service to bring you nearer to your Inn. After checking in, you will have to buy entrance ticket to the "Scenic Area". The entrance ticket is RMB120 for daytime (up to 5pm in winter, slightly later in summer) and RMB80 for night time. Recommend those who are staying overnight to enter the village at 5pm, and you can spend the whole day the next day to explore the water village. The water village in dusktime is very beautiful. Breakfast at the homestay is complimentary and is prepared by the respective innkeepers (they are actually the owners of the house). You have to place your breakfast order by evening time. Three breakfast sets to choose from, either oriental or western. Dinner can be taken at any of the restaurants in the town. Quite a variety. Some innkeepers also offer dinner (upon guests' request). We stayed in Inn No. 63, but chose to have our dinner by the waterfront at another Inn (Inn 61C). Six of us spent less than RMB200 for a very simple dinner with about 6 dishes, which is very affordable (but it also depends on what dishes you order). After dinner, we explored the village by foot and the next day, we took a boat ride around the waterway (standard price of RMB120 for six persons to a boat). One advantage for the central management is it weed out competition which sometimes can cause confusion and can address travellers' concern that one might get cheated by a poor bargain, and it certainly helped to maintain the quality service standard of the place in the longer term. Many travel groups only get to stay a few hours visiting this town (usually they pass by the village enroute Shanghai - Hangzhou). Personally, I feel that an overnight stay is a much better way to enjoy this ancient water village.

Room Tip: Homestay accommodation in Wuzhen Xizha is centrally managed. You don't really get to choose whi...

Truly a delightful experience staying at Wuzhen Guesthouse (which is really a collection of dozens and dozens of bed & breakfast places, each with 5 or 6 rooms along the waterfront or inner alleyways). The "guesthouses" are managed by a centralized reservations office. Each "guesthouse" is run by a landlord and his family who take care of you and cook your meals (breakfast and more if you wish). Ours did not speak English and I assume that others wouldn't either. This was not an insurmountable problem since we got by with a smattering of Chinese and when he thought we had not understood something, he called the reception desk for someone to speak to us in English. The rooms were simple but of a decent standard, although a little small with a king sized bed in it! The bathroom was clean and had a good supply of hot water. Our room overlooked the canal, which we loved. The great advantage of staying overnight here is that you can get up early in the morning and (almost) have the place to yourself before the hoards of tourists start to arrive around midday.

Tip: when you check in at the Visitor's Centre at the entrance to Wuzhen old town Western Scenic area, there is a luggage service to ferry your suitcases to your guesthouse (and when you leave your landlord will have them transported back to the Visitor's Centre for you). Also, if you arrive after 5:00 or 5:30 pm (I don't recall exactly), the ticket entrance to Wuzhen Western Scenic area is half price (80 RMB instead of 160 RMB per person).

Room Tip: It's worth paying a little extra for a riverside view room. They are also less noisy than rooms...

I stayed with my husband and some friends. The room was just magic over looking a canal together with the furnishings and the wooden hot tub! Wuzhen is a place not to be missed and it is a shame that more International Tourist do not visit this wonderful place. the Guest House is well located.

what a great idea..take an old water village,,,restore it to 5 star standard but in a compassionate way and have the orginal owners run their old homes as guest houseson a B&B style basis...very very pictureesque, stunning experience, loved the live in an old home idea, food excellent, location excellent...my only word of warning is English is not that common...people very very friendly and helpful...my wife liked it for what it is not what it pretends to be

Room Tip: go to the east side for a day trip

The town was so beautiful and vintage, and we were staying in one of the wooden house! Our room was attached to a balcony, which we able to enjoy the night lighting and also morning sun. Excellent experience!

Wuzhen is a water town that's a bit off the beaten path. The town itself is charming, though you should expect more of a Disney-esque location than an actual "working" town since no one really lives there and it's more for show. We really enjoyed it, though, and it was my husband's favorite place on our 24 day trip because of the architecture. There aren't many places to stay and the hotels are spread out over several buildings. So, there wasn't really a central location for this hotel and I can't rate it overall. We paid extra for a water view room and I'd say that wasn't worth it since the whole town is on water anyway. It's not like we stared out of the windows all day anyway--we went out to walk around and it was dark when we arrived besides. The heat is so-so (like all of the places in China). The room was clean and comfortable, though. The breakfast that came with the room was good and we had a nice variety of options available. When you check in, you get a check list with options to check off. You give that to the contact person in your building when you cross into Wuzhen from the entry gate where the boats are and that;s how you place your order for breakfast. I would stay in this location again, though if I could afford the 5 star option, I would probably try that instead. The room was spotless, though, and well worth the price. The town was cozy and comfortable.
