The Hawthorns
Reviewed May 15, 2013

We thought since The Hawthorns had recently changed hands it had perhaps improved the quality of the food - lets face it it couldn't get much worse. Many years ago when there were fewer carveries about it was quite good and served a carvery every day of the week. We used to go most Fridays until it changed hands. Today the meal was pretty poor - and not cheap at £6.45 compared to Crown carveries at £3.70. The carver couldn't carve and we ended up with thick chunks of turkey. The yorkshire puddings were tough and the stuffing a solid lump. The mashed potato had nearly run out and the waitress brought some new and proptly put what was left of the old mash on top of the new. The so called roast potatoes had a curious orange coating on them and had been deep fried and were dry inside. Compared to others in the area it was very poor and we will not be recommending it or going for lunch again

I took my wife and mum to The Hawthorns for dinner today(Friday 15th Feb) and was really impressed. We opted for the 2 course meal for only £6.95..For starters my wife and mum both had the Carrot & Colander Soup which they really enjoyed with the fresh bread..I had Garlic Mushrooms on a nice sliced of fresh coked bread. For Main Course, my mum had Gammon Ham with new potatoes, whilst me and the wife had Pork and Black Pudding on a bubble and squeak base with gravy. The Barmaid was very friendly along with the young lady Chef. The waiter was very cheerful and very quick with his job of serving and cleaning the table. My mum had a lemonade and me and my wife had a black coffee each and in total the bill was just over £20 which we felt was good value. The Hawthorns was very clean and tidy and although the TV was on, it was silent and nice background music was on low enough so you could talk and hear what the other person was saying. We will def return again soon.
