“waste of time going there”
Reviewed December 9, 2012

I recently went to this hotel. I went with my niece to celebrate her 18th. We went because it was advertised as a SPA hotel. We arrived Saturday afternoon to be informed we could not book any treatments as the therapists go home at 5pm and the SPA is not open Sundays. We then decided to use the pool area. The reception we got from the staff was very bad. They appeared cross we interrupted their conversation. When we arrived in the pool the Jacuzzi was not working. We were not informed abut this. So really i could have gone to my local swimming pool for less money.
When i went to bed that evening i realised i had left my sleep apnoea machine in the bar so called to see if it had been handed in. I was informed they had checked the bar and it was not there. I asked again in the morning and was told they had checked again. It was not until i had met with someone and passed over the machine not being worth any value it was then found behind the bar that had been checked on two previous occasions.
I did fill in a survey and they asked to call me back but they never did. This is the only consistent thing with this hotel incompetance

We stayed here in June 2012 with our young daughter.

Arrival
The hotel car park is large with plenty of parking.

As you approach the hotel entrance you have a sense of ease which is totally dispelled on entering.

The reception desk is not clearly marked although soon becomes obvious as the peculiar angled desk tucked to the right in a somewhat dated reception area.

The reception area as a whole does have toilets, phones, a leaflet stand of local points of interest and the restaurant/bar off to the left.

Check in was painless and we were allocated our room pretty quickly and given directions.

Room
So off we went in search of our room which was on the 2nd floor. We struggled with 2 suitcases and a small child up the stairs (there did not appear to be any lifts). We then walked down a very long, dimly lit and extremely hot corridor.

On entering the room it was even hotter than the corridor. There was no air con in the room, but a fan was available and turned on immediately.

The window was opened but had to be closed again. This was for two reasons, 1) Low level sliding window without safety locks on the 2nd floor with a young child. 2) As we were at the far end of the hotel, we were right on top of the M1 and the noise was at an unacceptable level.

I approached reception and asked to be moved. This was done without fuss and so the window and noise issues were resolved, although the heat issue was still the same. The new room was closer to reception and on the same level. The room looked the same as the previous although it was classed as a disabled room. The only difference we could see was the vinyl sheeting and pull cords as you entered.

The rooms themselves are worn and in need of refurbishment. They are small and rather gloomy.

The double bed dipped in the middle so one of us slept in that while the other shared with our daughter whose bed was very comfortable.

There is far too much unnecessary furniture which adds to making the room smaller.

The main issue with the room was the heat. It was not hot outside but the room was almost unbearable. We had to have the fan pointed at us at night to get to sleep. After showering in the morning you had to get out of the room quickly or you would be sweating and have to start over.

Pool
Although the pool area was small, my daughter loved it. The gym had several pieces of equipment along with a steam room, Jacuzzi and sauna.

Restaurant
This is too small for the number of guests, hence you are held in a queue for a considerable amount of time to be seated.

The layout is bad which means other guests are queuing alongside your table. The waiter was a bit stroppy when I refused to sit at one such table. There were other tables available so I didn’t feel my request was unreasonable.

The food choice is limited and very expensive. The evening meal took a while to be presented and then was only passable.

It was far too hot in the restaurant which made eating a meal very uncomfortable. There were a lot of guests going across the road to the Brewers Fayre restaurant.

Breakfast was not great for all of the above reasons.

Overall

Although our stay was for 3 nights, after the 2nd night we had had enough. We did try getting a room at the Premier Inn across the road but they were fully booked. So we packed our things and left.

If it were not for the reception staff, I would have rated this hotel lower.

Our stay here was not a good one.

Room Tip: If you do stay, ask for a room facing away from the M1, close and on the same level as reception.

We have now stayed at the Derbyshire four or five times, and it is pretty consistent. Knowing that there is some variety in the standard of the rooms, we always request one we have stayed in before and know to be good. We never get it, but it has become something of a tradition. Some rooms are good, with flat screen TVs and non-misting bathroom mirrors, others are rather tired, with old CRT TVs, erratic heating and no A/C. On this occasion we had one of the latter, but for a single night it was OK. Check-in is never straightforward, with requests not noted but others recorded which had not been made!

For all that, there is something endearing about the Derbyshire. The welcome is always warm, the staff friendly and helpful, and I have never had a stay I did not enjoy.

The bar is expensive and the food unexceptional, but you can eat and drink at the Brewer's Fayre across the road for a fraction of the price. The pool and spa area is great.

We paid £67.15 for B&B, which I thought was very good value. We'll be back.

Room Tip: Don't bother, it doesn't seem to make any difference.

I have stayed in many hotels business and leisure. The Derbyshire in terms value, quality and service could not be faulted. All staff had clearly been trained to give excellent customer service and Mark, duty manager certainly led by example - his warm friendly greeting on arrival then assistance with luggage to the room.

We stayed here for 2 nights on a deal from TravelZoo, and while we enjoyed our stay I would have been more complimentary about it, if only for the number of things that spoiled the stay.

The good points - staff attentive, helpful and friendly and dealt with any queries efficiently - location close to M1 and proximity to the open countryside of the Peak District make this an ideal place top stay - rooms clean and tidy - breakfast was plentiful (although with a full hotel the resturant struggled with the numbers at times) - large car park.

The bad points - my wife twice had to return her main course at the evening meal as it was cool/going on cold - WiFi never worked - the mattress on the bed was terrible (we asked it to be changed, we think they just turned it. so although better not perfect) - I found the taste of the organge juice at breakfast odd the first morning so avoided it the rest of the stay.

Room Tip: I think no room would be better placed than any other

My husband and I have just spent 2 nights at this hotel on an excellent deal through Travel Zoo which included 2 nights with dinner, a bottle of wine and breakfast both days and full use of the spa facilities.

We had read mostly good reviews but our experience far outweighed our expectations.

The receptionist on check-in was great. Really friendly and helpful.

Our room was large, clean, included tea and coffee and free WiFi and overlooked the spa. There was a little noise from the nearby motorway, but nothing that disturbed our sleep.

We went to the spa on both days and it was spotless. Small but adequate pool, steam room, jacuzzi, sauna, gym.

Dinner on the first night was delicious. We had a deal for 2 courses plus wine and we both had a starter and main. On the second night, we had a main and dessert, which was delicious.

On the first night, we were woken by the fire alarm and had to evacuate the hotel at 2am! We were out for about 10 mins and the next morning we were so tired we missed breakfast. We went down around 11ish and the receptionist offered to arrange for some breakfast for us. We were the only people in the dining room, as they were preparing for dinner, but the waitresses were very friendly and brought cereal and egg and bacon sandwiches for us and gave us advice on the local shopping areas.

The breakfast buffet was really good. Only criticism is that the toast table was on the other side of the room to the hot buffet bar and I didn't even notice it until I was half way through my breakfast.

One other downside, bar drinks were very expensive and they could provide some entertainment or just some music in the evenings.

All in all, a great weekend and we will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: Ask for room facing away from M1

this hotel reminded me of that old tv series of the seventies set in the midlands.
on first impressions, i think due to the staff uniforms.& general appearance of the hotel
ideally situated right next to the M1 i stayed here for 2 wks. rooms were spacious although
a bit outdated, could do with a good makeover.athough the large double beds very good.
wifi not free. (£4 for 8 hrs) although due to it's location it is a very busy hotel, i feel the
food was very expensive for the menu on offer, ie £13.95 for a very ordinary burger with 8
chips stacked on side. cheapest bottle of wine £19.99, which probably explains while i was
there, a lot of customers chose to go across the street to brewers fare restaurant for
reasonably priced better value meals & drinks. i must say that the pool steam room, sauna,
jacuzzi & gym are free to residents and excellent. the buffet breakfast in the hotel
restaurant very good and the staff efficient & helpful overall not a bad hotel, however prices
for wifi ( free in most hotels) and value for money regarding food & drinks lets it down in
many respects.

Room Tip: choose a room closer to reception area, as it can be a long walk along coridors to different wings...
