“Very imposing”
Reviewed November 4, 2013

Although it does not have the same history and strategic importance as the Rumtek monastery, The Ranka monastery is a beautiful structure and has very imposing statues of lord Buddha inside. Many young lama's receive their training here and unlike the Rumtek monaestry it does not involve a steep climb. Our guide told us that several Bengali movies have been shot on this location.

“A buddhist live Monastery”
Reviewed October 30, 2013

We visited this Monastery in October 2013. You need an id and have to pay a fees to enter. They claim that this money is spent on upkeep of Monastery. I am sure it goes for upkeep of people as well because you can see lot of Buddhists living there and there is hardly any signs of upkeep. However we saw some arrangements being made probably for some construction or repainting. The place is dirty and the temple is also not swept or kept clean which was disappointing a bit. Neverthless this does not take away the serenity characteristic of any Monastery. I only feel that it could be better. The buddha statue is beautiful and so are the other pices of art on display there. Some of the artefacts belong to the 17th Century, we are told.Basically these are the household items that were in use. I also found a school nearby , probably run by the Monastery. Lot of noise emanating from the place because of young boys and girls . Some young Lamas were having fun on the lawns wrestling with each other in the morning Sun..
