Mayfair Spa Resort & Casino

Six of us stayed at The Mayfair Gangtok at the end of a 3,400 kilometer drive the whole length of India in Auto Rickshaws, (also known as Tuc Tuc's) The Mayfair is a beautiful oasis of calm and quality in a part of the World not renowned for either.
It delivers very high quality in all aspects, rooms - superb, ambiance - superb, food - excellent.
I travel extensively and would rate the Mayfair in the upper quartile of the Worlds hotels.

However for any review to have value it is necessary to discuss the negatives even if, as in the case of the Mayfair, they are very small.
The Mayfair is used for business conferences and weddings by the population of Gangtok , so you can suddenly find that the peace and tranquility gets a bit dented for an hour or two. So if the sight of people enjoying themselves upsets you, go stay in a cave somewhere.
The measure of a World class hotel is how they handle the odd things that inevitably go wrong, at the Mayfair resolution is instant and discrete - just as it should be.

I noticed another review talked of excessive traffic noise while staying at the Mayfair, I think they must have been staying in a different hotel as the road is well away from the hotel and cannot be heard.

I knew I'd made a mistake when I arrived at the Mayfair to be greated by loud techno music. The manager told me there was a party in the hotel, but assured me I wouldn't hear my music from my room. When I reached my room, I could hear the music, which did not stop after I complained. I spent the evening with earplugs in. While my room was spacious and one of the best rooms in the hotel, it had a number of problems. The sheets were stained, there were cockroaches, many of the electric outlets didn't work and the hairdryer didn't work. I had a lovely porch that I couldn't use because of the music, and then when the music stopped I could hear the endless truck horns from the very busy road that ran next to the hotel. When my TV stopped worked, it took them 30 minutes to come fix it. The food was average and breakfast was not included in the hotel rate. I checked out first thing the next day and shifted to Nor-Khill for the remainder of my stay in Gangtok.

As you already know, Mayfair is a expensive affair. But visiting Gangtok it is worth every penny. The best hotel in town by every standard.
Accomodation is great and a few kms before the city. Do not miss the spa treatment with the spa spread of 12000sqft.
The only disadvantage is the hotel is a 15-20 min ride from the Mall area of MG road for those that cant complete there holiday without shopping as well as those that are looking for cheaper food options as an alternate.

It’s a beautiful Place Gangtok nevertheless they have added to its beauty with this hotel.

Care has been taken to ensure the rooms are well furnished with modern facilities but still embody the spirit of heritage of Gangtok.

The Food at the restaurant left something to be desired for but all in all the beauty of the hotel made up for all its shortcomings.

Date of stay: June 6-8, 2010

We booked the place through their Delhi office after shortlisting the resort based on Tripadvisor rating. The booking experience was smooth (there is always some room for price negotiation).

The resort is beautiful, the facilities are excellent. The location is about 30 min before Gangtok town. That restricts mobility to some extent. The rooms are fairly large and have good views.

There is nothing much to do outside the resort but there are quite a few places around Gangtok that are worth a visit, if you are first timer.

Good place for a family too. We were a family of 4 and one room was good enough for all of us. The food was very good and service very personal.

Certainly recommended.

It was a short trip to Gangtok but we were really refreshed when we were back. The rooms were spacious and the beverages n snacks in the room were complimentary. Kids enjoyed the bubble bath. Food was simply great ...didnt want to leave but then good things do come to an end. Overall a very memorable stay which makes it to the top five hotels in our list.
