“Disappointing!!!”
Reviewed January 12, 2011

On a rating of 1 to 10 I would score this hotel a 4. Except for its location its a very mediocre hotel. The rooms were tacky and non functional. Not worth the money they charge or the rating they claim. The staff are friendly and do try to rectify things, but the infrastructure is not well maintained and just falling apart. The website is very glamorous and the pictures impressive. But once you get in there its a different story. The food however was the only saving grace. Would I go back there? No.

I was very unhappy with this hotel. They even had upgraded us to a better room but I found the room dirty, run down, the service was very bad especially in the restaurant, there are waiters just standing around not doing anything, they don't help you get seated, they don't pick up your plates (for buffets), it takes forever to get a coffee or even a tea. The buffet lunch was not so bad, but the breakfasts (buffet) are terrible, they have these sweet breads that look very unappetizing, you have to put bread in the toasters and wait and wait and wait and usually have to put it through 2-3 times to get it toasted, by that time, you just sort of give up. They offered to make an egg which looked very unappetizing and I didn't eat it and asked for oatmeal, which came back pure water (even though I had asked for it with milk). The hotel in general is run-down, the service is bad (they don't even change your sheets from one day to the next), the towels look dirty (they were clean but so old and thin and had stains in them), the lobby and elevators and hallways very depressing, in general I would never recommend this hotel. I also slept terrible, very uncomfortable rooms/beds.

A beautiful hotel, especially if you get one of the sea facing rooms on the promenade. Modern and light, well designed rooms though the shower, which is over the bath, took some getting in and out of and the wifi was intermittent. The day we left breakfast, meant to be served from 7, was put out at 725.

We had planned a visit to Pondicherry with the sole purpose of having a relaxed time coupled with a visit to Sri Aurobindo Ashram & Matrimandir at Auroville.

Pondicherry is like any other crowded town, but the Hotel Promenade is situated on the Promenade (Sea-face) and it is this unique location that makes a stay here really worthwhile !

We had specifically requested for a sea-facing room where the tariff was higher, but it was worth it. We could enjoy the sunrise sitting in our room (Photo annexed) and the fresh gusty breeze. There is no traffic allowed on this stretch of road for few hours in the evening and also early morning, which makes this location even more peaceful. The entire area encompassing a width (depth) of about 1.5 kms. behind Hotel Promande and also parallel to the sea-face has a heritage effect, with small houses, neat & cleanly swept streets and a few interesting cafes. An excellent place to enjoy a leisurely walk !

The Lighthouse restaurant was a slight let down, though. For one, it opens only in the evening and once the sun sets, the position of the seating and the glass embankment alongside is such that one cannot visualise the sea-shore at all ! We also felt that the Kababs were par-bolied first and then roasted, resulting in a not so palatable taste.

The Blueline restaurant was excellent - we had an all inclusive package(recommended) and we can vouch for the quality, presentation and taste of nearly all the dishes served. The Pizzas which we ordered once, were also excellent.

About Matrimandir at Auroville : Auroville is about 30 minutes drive from Hotel Promenade and one has to first register, take an appointment ( for the next day), watch an introductory video and then come back the next day to visit the Matrimandir. The evirons of this place are really wonderful and heavenly and a visit to the meditation chamber where a single ray of sunlight is focussed by a tracking heliostat on to a glass sphere, resulting in an etheral effect is just so soothing and peaceful. You are allowed to meditate here for about 12-15 minutes.

Our sincere thanks to all the staff at Hotel Promenade, who made our stay really comfortable, but specially to Ms. Kavitha & Ms. Sunitha for showing that little extra care & consideration !

We decided to go to Pondicherry for a couple of days in December and Promenade was highly recommended. We could get a room only for 1 night but it was worthwhile. The hotel is close to the sea and one gets a beautiful view of the Bay of Bengal from the rooms. The food was good - so was the room service. We had a breakfast buffet next day and the spread was excellent. The hotel location is very convenient as one has to only step out to be at the prime location in Pondicherry - The beach. It is a 5 star hotel with a reasonable tariff and highly recommended.

I went to the restaurant at The Promenade with my family. The service was excellent and the food was great. We had a memorable evening. I did not stay at the Promenade, so I can't comment about the rooms and other amenities, but will certainly recommend their restaurants based on my experience.

Stayed at the Promenade for just 2 nights. The hotel is centrally located and opposite the sea (across the road, but no beach).
It's a small but clean hotel with 2 restaurants. The room we had was nice but had an awful view of a grotty car park sadly. We kept the shutters closed. I would suggest if you stay there you ask for a sea view. The bathroom was nice but small. The pool is more of a plunge pool.
The hotel is fine for a short stay.
