“Only good thing in the park.”
Reviewed July 12, 2014

This is a nice structure in a park that is well by its use date, if the park was cleaned it may have some interest to go to it, it has so much potential but just needs some care.

“The icon of Pondicherry”
Reviewed June 30, 2014

The Oark Monument locally known as Aayi Mandapam is situated in the centre of beautifully designed Barathi Park in the white town area of the city. This monument buit during French regime is coloured in white and it gives a out of world impression when it sparkles in neon light during festival occassions. On the east side of the park is Gandhi Square and promenade. On the north we can see the Raj Nivas (the office and residence of Lt. Governor), Pondicherry Museum, Bharatidasan Govt. Public Library and Head Post Office. The Legislative Assembly Building, Circle de Pondicherry Club and Govt General Hospital are situated on west side of the park. The oldest bank in Pondicherry, UCO Bank, Chamber of Commerce, Police headquarters and Pondicherry Municipality Office known as Marie are on the south side of the park. Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Sri Manakula Vinayaga temple, Cathedral of St Mary, the commercial street known as Jawaharlal Nehru Street, Grand Bazaar Police Station, so many restaurants and hotels are only at walkable distance from the park.
The park is maintained well, but it could have been better preserved. This park also includes play area and traffic park for children and walk for those conscious about their health.

Overall a place to visit if your have interest in history.

“Not so impressive to look at but has an unusual story behind it”
Reviewed April 25, 2014

The park monument in Bharathi park is not very impressive but the story behind it is unusual.
We were told that years ago the king of Vijayanagar visited a small town (now Pondicherry) and liked a house. He was embarrassed to be told that this was in reality a brothel run by a lady called Aayi. Embarrassed, he wanted the building torn down. Aayi dug a drinking water well or tank in it's place.
The French ruler Napoleon III had this monument built in Aayi's memory.

“Nothing out of the way to be great”
Reviewed April 19, 2014

This is a monument with a history which is in the middle of the Bharti Park. Unfortunately there's not much mentioned around the actual monument about its history and relevance.
