“Lively!”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

We visited the market in the morning, which is when the fish market happens. The whole place is vibrant, with so much to explore. I bought some lovely silk scarves, and there are mountains of fresh produce. It was a market where you could walk around, buy things, interact but not get hassled into purchases. Well worth a visit!

“Fascinating Goubert Market”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

The Goubert Market, located at the edge of the French Quarter, is a fascinating adventure with literally hundreds of fish, fruit and vegetable stalls and a host of other items for sale as well. Be careful though, you can get lost in the narrow maze of lanes and pathways here! We discovered the market quite by accident one morning as we walking around while we waited for our breakfast place to open. This is where the local restaurants get their daily supplies and you will find row upon row of colorful fresh fruits and vegetables as far as the eye can see.

The fish market part is particularly interesting although no question the smell can be a bit overwhelming. It would appear that the men do the fishing and the woman do the selling since all 25 or 30 fish stalls were manned by women. Off to the side of main market are vendors who sell statuary, woven baskets, clothing, leather goods, jewelry and just about anything imaginable. I suggest going early in the day when the place buzzes with activity. Photo ops abound. Not for the faint of heart perhaps, it is noisy, packed to the gills with people and activity (be careful – you’ll have to give way to the “runners” with goods stacked high on their heads) and it’s easy to lose one’s way, but if you’re interested in seeing an old fashioned market in operation this is the place to see.
