Having never experienced a guesthouse or a home stay in India, we chose La Closerie with some amount of uncertainty. We like our creature comforts and normally choose a Taj, Gateway or Trident option where we can and although unfair to compare - - La Closerie did not let us down.
The rooms with the mezzanine floor (which sleeps 2) is absolutely great for families with little children. A special than to our hosts (Annie and Alan) who were absolutely great, very helpful and helped with bookings / plan our days in Pondicherry etc.

Room Tip: Annie showed us a few options and we liked all rooms bar room 1.

The location is superb, rooms are decorated with taste, breakfast is good and the welcome is very warm.
This Guest House is located in the middle of the French Quarter and you can do everything on foot.
If you want to spend a pleasant moment, I recommend!!

Location : The place is right next to Le Club (one of the best restaurants in Pondy) and very close to Promenade.

Facilities : Well maintained comfortable rooms with a small dip-in pool inside the compound. Please note that this is not a hotel so do not expect a hotel like treatment. Breakfast is good but you'd rather go to Baker's Street.

Value Add : One can get drinks and chill at the pool. :)

Rooms : Try getting one inside the main house.

Staff : Run and managed efficiently by Eglina and the local folks.

Room Tip: Depends on the budget, all rooms are comfortable. We stayed in Room 3 but since the other rooms were...

My wife and I visited Pondicherry on 8th March 2013. Pondicherry offers you a lot of accomodation options - some closer to the ECR road some in the French colony. After a lot of deliberation we finalized La Closerie inside the French town. We had never stayed in a home-stay before so were kind of sceptical. But all our fears were laid to rest when we arrived. Its such a wonderful property bang in the middle of the French quarters. Its just on the road next to the beach road with trees all aound. You can actually feel the flavor of France everytime you step outside. The property itself is equally beautiful. We eneded up clicking more pictures of the room and the property than of the Pondi landmarks. The room itself was just grand. With the high bedstand, the antique furnitures all around, the period feel is obvious - goes on to show the painstaking effort exhibited by our host. Breakfast was a simple but tasty affair with the most delicious cakes and criossants served with utmost care. A perfect romantic gateaway

Room Tip: All the rooms are equally good and very different from each other-Tastefully done. The first floor o...

It was our first trip to Pondicherry and we were looking for a quiet place to stay at, in the french quarters. A travel blog led us to La Closerie and we hit jackpot.
La Closerie is a charming house located right behind Alliance Francaise on Dumas street. Its got a dip pool and a green patch in the centre of the property with rooms on either side. Its also got a gracious living room, with an interesting collection of literature, to lounge around in. We were a group of 3 and the room we'd chosen had a mezzanine floor with a mattress which suited us well. The room was done up nicely with furniture that's functional and eclectic. The only thing that we didn't like about it was the bathroom whose entrance had curtains instead of a door which made it uncomfortable to use.
The service was unobtrusive and the breakfast which comprised of fresh fruits, juice, croissants, preserves and coffee was healthy and filling. Agline, who was managing the place while we were there pointed us to some good french restaurants in the vicinity and was very helpful in general.
The location of La Closerie is perfect to explore the french quarters and we got lucky that our stay coincided with the Bonjour India festival, organized by Alliance Francaise held on the promenade. We were literally a hop, skip and jump away from the main performance area.
A very comfortable and charming place, will recommend La Closerie to anyone traveling to Pondicherry

Room Tip: Rooms with a mezzanine floor are great for groups of 3 or 4

When you walk in the French quarters in Pondicherry, you get glimpses of beautiful old homes surrounding gorgeous courtyards and you yearn to be able to stay in them. Well, yearn no more. La Closerie is an amazing, lovingly built home, where you feel more like a house guest than a tourist.

Having made the reservations over the phone, after seeing the property listed on Tripadvisor, we were quite excited about our stay. We have visited Pondy several times in the past and have stayed at different properties. La Closerie has been the best experience so far.

Located on shady Dumas Street, right in the heart of the French quarters, La Closerie is cloistered away behind a wooden door. We were greeted by Eglina who takes care of the house for the owner, Annie. The courtyard has a lap pool, right next to the long, shady verandah. Though the house has been recently built after bringing down the old property, it has been lovingly restored in the old Pondy style with high ceilings and lots of antique furniture.

We had visited with our adult daughter and two teenage nephews. Our room was in the main house. It had a mezzanine where an extra mattress was placed for our daughter. The boys got a separate garden room. In the scorching April weather, the swimming pool was fabulous- who would expect one in a place like this? The children, my daughter and my husband loved it. Since there are only 6 rooms in La Closerie and all the other guests had seemed to have gone out, it felt like we were in our own home, having a great time!

Breakfast was a lovely continental one with fresh fruit, fresh juice, croissant, toast and preserves. A variety of tea was provided. You can choose to eat at several locations overlooking the garden.Quite the serene experience.

So is there a problem in this paradise? The lack of bathroom doors is quite a daunting prospect. There are thin net curtains for both the shower and the toilet and this is very disturbing. We were told that when somebody is using the bathroom, the others could step out of the room which is what we did but it is very inconvenient. The room we stayed in is meant to be used by 3-4 people and whether it is shared by family or friends, privacy in the bathroom is paramount. So Annie, please install doors!
