“Wonderful staff, exquisite room..”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2012

We had the junior suite which was just gorgeous - a mix of old colonial charm and contemporary conveniences (like his and her sinks), and personal touches (individually wrapped soaps, organic ayurvedic toiletries).
Breakfast was great - some of the best croissants I've ever had (and I've traveled to many parts of France), fresh fruits, fresh fruit juice, and eggs to order. Though during the 3rd day of our stay they said they had changed the included breakfast policy to only continental, but they grandfathered us in, so we continued to receive breakfast with eggs.
Service was good - although language is a barrier, staff was pleasant, friendly, caring, and just super nice. We traveled with our 5-year old son, so this was a huge plus.
Only drawback of the junior suite - you need to climb on a stool to get onto the gorgeous bed, and that stool tends to slide on the floor easily, leading to falls, slips, and overall a hazard. We informed their architect who was in town during our stay. But other than that, we really liked the junior suite - it has a nice balcony and plenty of windows.
One thing we did miss - a pool! But then again, I enjoyed the quiet boutique nature of the hotel and the beautiful courtyard.
I've recommended this place to everyone I know!

Room Tip: Ask for the junior suite

A very nice place. Its part of the heritage or white town as they call it. The facade is old / heritage building but its very modern inside with classical furniture and all modern amenities provided. The rooms are spacious and have huge 14ft high ceiling witch adds to the heritage touch. The staff is very nice and always smilling from Soma/piyush/rajesh /the lady at the reception / the french intern always smilling. The staff will accept most of your request and can arrange lots of thing to be done in and around the place. The whole place is a walking treasure hunt with restaurants / boutiques / shops/furniture place spread over. The only problem here was the breakfast, its only ment for people on a strict healthy diet. The serve 4 pieces each of 3 fruits (in miniature size) with a basket of bread. Everything else is extra. I really didnt have the chance to n'joy the food that much as was constantly out but the little that I ate out of which the Chicken sandwich was the best the Beef stake the worst. The dont have a 24hr kitchen.

Room Tip: Ask the staff for suggestion for everything.

A decent quiet homely place. Friendly well mannered staff adds to the experience. The rooms do not have a television but Hotel staff put up a TV in the courtyard for UEFA 2012. Clean rooms & clean bathrooms. The bar is well stocked. The hotel gives one an impression of era gone by due to its fittings & furniture. Coffee is special here.

Room Tip: Choose the rooms facing staircase & palmtree in the courtyard

Located bang in the french quarter, Villa Shanti isn't what I expected. Its not on the lines of a 5-star hotel. It is more of a very quiet homely place. The interiors are decent, with an open courtyard where dinner is served. Rooms are clean, functional and reasonably decorated.
The breakfast here was good. Croissants were the best I have had. Even the Indian dishes were tasty. I had one dinner here ( candlelight) and that was the best meal I had in Pondy. Kudos to the chef(s)
The staff here are really friendly and good. They are the stars of the place. Best service I have had anywhere.
Highly recommend and will definitely be back

Room Tip: First floor rooms might be better that second floor ones.

Me and my wife are regulars to Pondicherry and though we stayed in Ocean Spray, we used to drive 15 kms everyday to experience lunch and the hospitality at Villa Shanti. The staff is very hospitable and the place is beautiful and calm. A special mention of Saravanan, the restaurant staff and thanks to him, we will always return to this place. He was the best host that we have experienced and was very friendly and welcoming. The food is awesome and the desserts are something to die for. We also had a look at the rooms and they are very tastefully done and neat.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2012

My family and I stayed for five nights at Villa Shanti in April 2012. It was a wild card booking for us as we had long been planning to visit Pondicherry and were aiming to stay at Hotel de l'Orient or Hotel Dupleix. But then, on Trip Advisor, we saw more favourable reviews for the newly opened Villa Shanti and decided to take a gamble. From the moment I contacted Villa Shanti by email, the service was excellent. The very friendly Thamimul quickly arranged our reservation and booked a taxi to collect us from Chennai airport at the ungodly hour of 3:30 am, when our flight got in from London. The taxi was easy and took two and a half hours at a cost of 3500 rupees. We had not booked the night before and arrived at 7:15 am. The hotel staff were incredibly kind in letting us check straight into our room at no extra charge: an amazing gesture and a welcome one, since we could barely stand up by that point. The room was spotlessly clean and was kept spotlessly clean by housekeeping the whole time we were there. The hotel is petite, fresh, modern, light, relaxing and reminded us at times variously of hotels in Los Angeles/ Miami and also of riads we have stayed in when visiting Morocco (Villa Shanti's rooms all open Moroccan style onto a lavishly green courtyard where breakfast and dinner are served). Our room was simple, with gorgeous tiling and beautifully furnished. The bed was very comfortable, with immaculately clean bedding. The hotel set up what I can only describe as the most elegant and stylish child bed we had ever seen: a small wooden bed painted a gorgeous colour. The shower was excellent: powerful and refreshing. The hotel, apparently came about when two previous properties: Villa Helena and Shanti guesthouse were bought and combined and beautifully designed and converted by a pair of French architects. The conversion is stunning: every detail was thought through and the finish on the building is outstanding. The hotel staff are all very friendly and respect both your space and privacy: they achieve the amazing effect of making you feel as though Villa Shanti is temporarily your home. Along with Thamimul, two very friendly female managers were always on reception and effortlessly arranged trips to Auroville and a nearby temple dedicated to the god Hanuman. Breakfast was delicious and flexible: baskets of French baguette and pastries, served with fresh fruit and excellent coffee. The two men who served breakfast were exceptionally easy going and kind and always generous. When I mentioned that when we travel, my wife and I love to eat what locals eat, they bent over backwards to have the chef prepare a different South Indian breakfast each morning: introducing us to the delights of Poori and Pongal. We had lunch and dinner at various local heritage hotels while we were there, such as Maison Perumal (very good), Hotel Dupleix (not very good), Hotel De L' Orient (okay) and none of them serve food as delicious as the food the chef prepares at Villa Shanti. Even La Caravelle at Maison Rouge, which serves very good food, could not touch Villa Shanti. We had three dinners at Villa Shanti and they were all very, very good: freshly prepared food, good service and a lovely atmosphere. The hotel is well placed for seeing the best of Pondicherry on Rue Suffren, a few minutes walk from Maison Rouge/ La Caravelle, Hotel Dupleix and a short walk or rickshaw ride from the Manakula Temple (where Lakshmi the elephant blesses people with a trunk kiss to their heads), Aurobindo ashram (a beautiful place to visit), Immaculate Conception cathedral on Mission Street (enchanting: almost Mexican in its colours), the frenetic shopping fever of Nehru street and the seafront promenade. The hotel also has chairs and tables set up on the various floors, outside rooms and we enjoyed quite a few teas sitting up outside our room overlooking the courtyard. The bar/ cafe area has a large selection of magazines for guests to enjoy: a nice touch we've only ever experienced before while staying at Andre Balazs' Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles. At the end of our five night stay, we were sad to leave: Pondicherry is an enchanting town and Villa Shanti is an enchanting base from which to explore it.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 9 which we loved.
