“Great place to relax and have interesting conversations”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2013

My wife and i decided to celebrate New Year away from home for the first time ever, and we zeroed in on Pondicherry. For me the important thing was to find a place that would give me an 'experience', in addition to having a good time. Gratitude Heritage helped me do just that. They dont claim to be a Hotel and neither a Homestay. They claim this to be a 'private residence with exclusive rooms for guests'. What you get in Gratitude is some very warm people and great hospitality from people like Virginia, Anto, Vijay, & Kakoli. You morning starts with the dong being sounded at 830 am, and you gather at the dining area for some fresh breakfast. While the breakfast spread is basic, what is interesting is the people you meet. Virginia does her bit in introducing people and making them feel at home, and this helps one build new friends and acquaintances. The rest of the day there is really nothing to do at Gratitude but to enjoy the beautiful courtyard, visit their small library, sit on the breezy terrace and read a book or have a drink in the evening, and chat with people from across the world. Quite a relaxing experience. The place has a unique feel to it, with the smell of lemon grass in all the rooms, and old antique furnitures around. Another plus for the property is the proximity to the beach road and to various good eateries. Very convenient. What took the place to another level was the surprise plan they made for New Years. They got a musician (Lithuanian, from Frankfurt) and he played the flute and violin for the guests, along with some wine and snacks. The last hour of 31st was spent on their terrace chatting and laughing with new friends - perfect first new year getaway for me and my wife.

Room Tip: Room 3 is quite, rooms on the first floor are supposed to be the best.

I travelled alone through South India and had a wonderful time. My stay in Pondicherry was a definite highlight, and the team at Gratitude made me feel very welcome.
The place is spotless and the rooms are big and charming, with an airy feel. I stayed in room five, which has a blue theme, and room six - which is more like three rooms and has a big four poster bed and separate bathroom with a bath. It's probably the most spoilt I have ever felt while on holiday.
The atmosphere in the place is very quiet and relaxed. On the first night I was there, me and another guest bought drinks and sat out on the rooftop under a full moon. It was amazing.
The rooms have fans and air conditioning, so you can have them at any temperature you want. There is filtered water to drink, so you don't have to worry about poisoning yourself, and there's plenty of space to spread out. It was very quiet when I stayed - Pondi is not a party town - and so it was easy to unwind. It's an ideal place to get into your book or get your writing going.
Breakfasts at the hotel are brilliant - whether you are timid about Indian cuisine or want to dive in. There's always toast, cereal and yoghurt and there was usual a hot Indian dish to try as well. The dosai are great.
Local knowledge at the hotel was a definite strength. Anto Asha and Vijay will help you set up any trip, with a pre-paid driver and advice and when and how and what to do. I headed to Auroville on one day, which was great, and they also sorted out a driver to pick me up from Chennai airport when I arrived.
I was like the cat that got the cream and I would absolutely love to be back.
Until next time :)

Gratitude is a beautiful building. Its been lovingly restored but still retains plenty of charm and character. The room was lovely ( room 6) and the whole place is very serene. It's well located, in a quiet area in the french quarter around the corner from the promenade and fabIndia. There is a maestro cirrus city bank ATM 2 short blocks away and a number of decent food and drink places nearby.
It's not too far to mission street and cheap enough to get an auto if you can't be bothered walking. There is free wifi and breakfast is excellent ( coffee, tea, fruit, bread, croissants, muesli and yogurt plus potatoe dosa which are really good). The staff are very helpful when required. I was quite happy with my stay here and would certainly return.

The location is deceptively charming. Over a dug up road a nondescript facade hides inside, a lazy courtyard well covered by the shade of two tall trees. Niches and corners are available for the reader and a well stocked library on the first floor could be an endless source of quality literature. Well thought about rooms given a personnel touch and attention to small details like the cool earthenware pot of water at the corner, a small laundry diary with a pencil or the beautiful all - cotton bed spread add to the uniqueness of this 'home". Well looked after by a dedicated small team, gratitude offered us a lot in the 24 hours we stayed and left us craving for more.

My wife and I visited Gratitude between 10-12 Nov'2012 - after a lot of searching and querying and searching again. Coming back from this vacation, I must say we made the right decision!

We were shown to our room which had this faint yet noticeable scent of lemon grass and it truly helped us in relaxing after a long drive from Bangalore. The staff were courteous from the outset. My only gripe (if any) would be that we were held up till we paid the full amount towards our stay before being shown to our room (in spite of an advance payment). It definitely would be nicer if those formalities were taken care of after the guests settle in.

The name is aptly fitting and one feels transcended to another place altogether. Once you're within the walls of the courtyard - you seem to forget almost everything outside - it's just so serene and pleasant! The courtyard, the mango tree, the sloping roof with Mangalore tiles - awe and more awe. We stayed in Room 6 and I must say this is one of the best rooms on the property. There is a huge 4 poster bed in the middle of the room which is big enough to accomodate 4 ;). There is an armchair and a floor seating in one corner of the room - both very comfortable. The other side of the room houses a small study and some storage. The room has air conditioning which is required during the hot afternoons. There is a staircase which leads up into the bathroom which has a big tub and dresser.

The courtyard is a very beautiful place to settle in with a book or just dream whilst the swing nudges you back and forth. There is also a terrace right above the first floor which has some nice seating - a good place to catch up on some afternoon siesta!
Breakfast is served each morning in the common area which houses an 8 seater dining table which can be intimidating the first time you see it ;). Food is lovely and has a nice homely touch to it - instead of typical restaurant fare.

Gratitude is located on Rue Romain Rolland and is a stone's throw away from the Promenade. Each time we ventured out - we'd inevitably take this road which connects most of the other streets. There are some good restaurants around and our top picks would be Baker street, Villa Shanti and L'Orient.

We were able to meet Kakoli (of whom we'd read quite a bit on this forum) just briefly and she seems to be a very warm person. I'd definitely recommend visiting Gratitude - to take a break from all that hustle and bustle and just unwind.

Room Tip: Select room 6 - it's at the end of the veranda and closest to the terrace.

Location was not one of the reasons we chose Gratitude but it was just an added pleasure- an easy walk to the beach and good restros in town, this heritage guest house has 7 or 8 unique rooms- you can pick the one you want to book from their website. The entire house is beautifully decorated with antique furniture inclduing the room (we stayed in number 7) with its 4 poster bed so high that you need a tool to reach the bed. The charming house is spotlessly clean, the bathroom equipped with modern facilities and spotless as well. I simply loved the decor and the lemongrass smell that greets you everytime you come into the room. There is a lovey garden with tables and chairs to sit and enjoy a cup of tea. Breakfast is served in the beautiful (and large) common dining table- acquainted with the huge spreads of chain hotels this might be a slight disappointment but I think the homely food added to the charm of the 'house' as opposed to a hotel. Still a little more variety will be very appreciated given the steep price paid for most rooms.
The staff are lovely and helpful. They also have a library from where you can borrow books to spend an idle afternoon.
The house is also serene and calm- a welcome change. Their policy of discouraging children just adds to the peace of mind- no screams and disturbances- an ideal place to just relax.
I cant think of anywhere else to stay in Pondicherry- Gratitude is the absolute best.

Room Tip: We loved Number 7

This is a beautiful, nice and serene place in the French quarter with close proximity to Marine Drive & some decent night hangouts. The courtyard is very charming and the rooms are well appointed.

The breakfast is rather basic though. Maybe they could consider a few more hot items like eggs and an additional south indian dish to the idlis which we were served.

A nice experience on the whole, nevertheless!
