The reviews on Tripadvisor aren´t wrong about this place. Sabine (and Snoopy!) greeted us when we arrived and showed us to the rooms. Sabine has really put her stamp on this place, and spent much time and patience into turning it into something very unique and special. I think we may have been the only non-French staying here, but this was no problem. Rooms very different, spacious, well kept, beautifully clean and nicely decorated with an individual touch and personal service from the proprietrix. She makes you feel like you are a valued guest. My relatives were ill during our stay, and she was very concerned, asking after them, nothing too much trouble. Breakfast was just like you get in France - fresh buttery croissant, crispy baguette, jam, butter, tea and coffee. It was declicous but to be honest I had had enough by the fourth morning, so we ate out at another place for breakfast. The location of the guesthouse is great, in the middle of the French quarter, close to the sea. You really must get to the promenade after sunset, they close off the street for traffic and the whole of Pondy is wandering up and down the seafront. It´s a very special atmosphere. I would definitely stay here again. Chapeau Sabine!

Highlight of our holidays in India, by going through the door you enter a little paradise with plants and birds singing. The rooms are perfect, decorated in colonial style, quiet and very clean. The staff are very nice and the owner friendly and helpful. Very nice breakfast. Very well located but quiet also. We were sad to leave.

Room Tip: Suite 'La Coloniale' is awesome, very big and with beautiful little garden. 'Le Studio...

We booked our stay at the Coloniale Heritage Guest House online, after a lot of apprehension. Once we reached the place, we were smitten from the first minute.

We were three women travelling for a long weekend to Pondicherry and wanted it to be perfect. The three of us shared one room (le studio) at the guest house, which was flawless clean, the decor was ethnic and very warm and had a swing! Every room has a balcony or a sit out with bright coloured walls. The rooms did not have any television (we were glad). its private and quiet, even though it is situated within the popular French quarters.

All our restaurants were a walk of maximum 10minutes from the guest house. The seaside is less than 5minutes. Auto rickshaws are readily available around the area.

They do not have a strike time, though the guard would have appreciated us coming in a little earlier than 1AM. Sangeetha is extremely helpful. So is Sabine. They would be happy to share information about the place, especially if you know French.

The breakfast was not quite expected. It was limited to croissant, bread, fruit, juice and tea/coffee. We were quite looking forward to a bit more variety in the meal. We tried the nearby restaurants for our other meals.

Coloniale Heritage made our Pondy trip most special. We would love to go back and stay there.

We stayed in "Le Studio" and loved the room. It's filled with knickknacks, including figurines in the bathroom. The bathroom also had a ceiling fan, which gives you a sense of how hot it can get in Pondicherry. Some bugs found their way into the room, but the big mosquito net helped. The whole place was lovely and well-located. The host seemed to be friends with the other guests (a French couple) but was attentive when we asked for tea or breakfast. We ate breakfast out the first day, which we later realized was a mistake because the breakfast served at the guesthouse was amazing (if you like crusty french bread).

If you are after a place with flat screen TV in your room, the kind of bland-but-nice atmosphere of a modern hotel and a swimming pool outside, don't go near the Coloniale Heritage. There is no flat screen in your room, in fact, no TV at all (but there is Wifi), and the atmosphere is not bland, but quirky.
Step through the front door (100 yards or so from Beach Road) and you enter a stunning inner cour yard, laden with pationately looked after plants. The few rooms are beautifully decorated, facing inner court yards, so lovely and shady that you can forget the heat outside this oasis.
It's not a cheap place to stay, but its charm and tranqulity justify the price if you need a break from full-on India. The breakfast is as French as it comes with croissant, baguette, some butter and jam, a piece of fruit and freshly squeezed fruit juice and may be a bit repetative after a few days.
Coloniale Heritage is nicely located on the fringe of the French quarter. Around the corner is a bicycle hire shop where you can get a bike for R30 for 24hrs. And from there it takes you less than 10 minutes to cycle to Anandha Inn where you can use the swimming pool for - hold your breath - R650 or a few other hotels in and around Pondy for quick dip. Talking about pools...check out Don Giovanni in Mission St. You not only get some of the best Italian food there, but also free use of a roof top pool.
Sabin at the Coloniale Heritage will give you more info on that and much, much more.

We went as two families and got connected rooms. We booked the 'La familiale' and 'la romantique'. La familale has a sitout and a spacious bedroom.. while the other room had a private verandah but room as such was small.. Overall with the sitout, private verandah and comfortable beds, we had an amazing time..
Its really close to the beach, also close to most popular french restaurents and prominent places in pondy..Its inside the french colonies..
May not be the most luxurious stay in pondy but for the price its completely worth..
Special mention to Sabine & sangeetha who were really helpful..
