“Another excellent stay”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

We have recently spent our third holiday at the Arona Gran and we throughly enjoyed every day.
We cannot understand some of the negative comments on here.
We found all the staff to be friendly and helpful, from reception staff, bar staff, waiters, lifeguards and the animation team.
Our room was comfortable and spacious and always cleaned to a high standard. All the hotel is clean and comfortable. Some people say parts could do with upgrading, well that may be so, but it does not in any way detract from having a great holiday.
The food was great there is so much choice, both for breakfast dinner and we enjoyed all every meal.
The sun bed situation was much better this year. You cannot reserve your sun beds with towels, then disappear, if you do after 30mins the towels are removed. We found this system worked, we were able to get sun beds easily after breakfast, no problem.
We enjoyed taking part in the daily activities, and the animation team, Ruben, Sabine and Malinda were great fun.
In the evenings we throughly enjoyed listening to the resident pianist Jeremy who is excellent.
We have made many friends at the Arona Gran who like us will be returning in the future.
All in all a great hotel and holiday.

Stayed here for 2 weeks (myself, wife and 10 year old son) from the 9th to the 23rd august. First impression when entering lobby very good but soon turned to disappointment when entering room on the 6th floor, dated and in desperate need of a refurbishment, small ants in room entire stay and also in various places (including restaurant) around hotel, staff okay but nothing you wouldn't expect. the food was okay breakfast good but I only ate on site 4 times out of 14 for evening meals so form your own opinion on that one. pool area fantastic, gym and sauna only average. The hotel seems to want only to get you to pay for everything on arrival and during your stay i.e safe, extra pillows, Wi-Fi in room...etc etc. Prices around hotel (drinks ice cream or whatever) are expensive and I noticed several people leave in the afternoon to eat and drink in the locality where you can get a good meal for 5 euro's and a beer for 1 to 1.5 euro's. enjoyable stay overall though would probably stay elsewhere on next visit given the amount of money it cost us. good supermarket opposite for water and snacks etc though the hotel says you cannot take into your room nobody challenges you on this. the whole resort seems to be geared towards the older generation which for us was fine as it is quiet and it is only a short taxi ride to the more lively playa de las Americas.

I have read some very negative comments, but I must admit we have just spent a week in this beautiful hotel and found it excellent....welcoming and very obliging staff, room was spotless and the maid service excellent, prompt service when required and the Thomson rep Martyn very helpful as well. A few comments re the food, but my husband a meat eater found it exceptional and a vast variety of choice every night, for myself as a vegitarin my choice was a wee bit more limited, but there was something different every night and I have no real complaints except maybe a wee bit more of a choice, but salads to die for, potatoes and veg excellent. Pool area excellent and we saw no hassle in relation to the towels on sunbeds and staff more than helpful. A couple of niggles when we arrived it was at 10pm, and went to the rep meeting in th morning so by the time we got out there was no towels left and we had to wait 2 hours, this costs 20 euros, but once we had our towels no other issues, also on the last day while we were at breakfast the maid came in and locked the mini bar, I was not very happy as we were in the middle of packing and I'm sure they could have had more faith in their guests and waited till we checked out at 12pm, we were still in he hotel till 8pm and still had our evening meal there. The luggage is held in a secure room, but ask for a room to shower and change, and if its available you will get the room for round 30mins, not long but better than the gym. Overall a wonderful holiday where we meet lots of lovely people in beautiful surroundings, we will defo be back.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a sea view, it's 2 euros a day, but well worth it.

To be honest I was disappointed about this hotel and the area it was in. The thing is, it has potential to be outstanding, but it needs updating and with regular maintenance checks.
On the positive, lovely large bedrooms, very clean. We had upgraded to sea view which I'm glad we did as the view was great. Lovely large balcony. Pool area kept immaculate and we never had problems getting a sunbed.
I would say the hotel does attract the over 50 age group, although there were still a few babies and children that stayed there. My 16 year old son loved the pool tables and the pool. The golf range and table tennis not so good.
Food was average, plenty of choice but sometime repetitive and overcooked. Felt more like a canteen than a restaurant. Didn't understand why women could go to dinner in shorts and flip flops, yet the men and boys had to wear long trousers, as it was by no means posh. My 16 year old son was turned away on the first night and had to change. He looked very smart and by no means looked like he was going to the beach. He had to wear the same pair of trousers every evening for the whole week.
Really disappointing gym. Most of the Cardio equipment was out of order. Lots of the weights were missing. The sauna and changing rooms near the gym area smelt terrible.
The air-conditioning in our room didn't work. We reported the fault; still not sure if it worked much better after they fixed it. The shower didn't work properly as the seal around the top was missing and soaked the bathroom floor every time we used it.
Extra charges for using the safe and WiFi if you book through tour operator, so beware.

Room Tip: Sea view. Higher the better,

As most will know this is a first class hotel and for sure we enjoyed our stay. Meals we lovely and to suit all tastes. Pools area very relaxing and the new towel regime certainly help in securing those beds booked way to early ! Well done.
I do believe that the hotel group should look at upgrading the hotels styling with regards decor, rooms furniture etc. It is dated, dark woods, shabby sofas in lobby's on floors, wicker seating in reception. I know it works and most may not see this as being an issue but maybe time to reinvest in this well established hotel !

You won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Upper floor for views, harbour side of hotel for all day sun

Food

There is a wide selection of bland and boring food, the same almost every night. The food is uncovered so beware of the small flies also tucking in around desserts and cheeses! There is also a problem by the window seats with small ants crawling over the tables. There is limited choice for vegetarians other then salad. The meat and is kept next to the small vegetarian selection so most guests used the same tongs to pick up both! Omelettes are cooked altogether, so ingredients from other people's are often transferred to your own and the utensils are rarely wiped clean. The lack of kitchen staff at breakfast shows, the eggs are either over cooked or under cooked, with the chef looking stressed running back and forth. Why are carrots, broccoli and brussels served in the morning? There is always plenty of choice of meat, but slightly overcooked. The plates are always dirty, on top and below, as are the cups. The food is tepid or luke warm NEVER hot, although a microwave is provided. The staffing i have mixed emotions about the waiters are helpful, efficient, hardworking however the same cannot be said for the supervisors or maître, they are often talking to one another or appearing to be busy. The most annoying one is the singing waiter/ supervisor please management ask him to STOP, he's loud and unwelcoming. If he wants to be a singer then leave!

Recommendation to the hotel - have a separate section for your vegetarian guests Introduce more themed nights such as indian, chinese etc and invest in some covering for the cheese and dessert areas.

The rooms:

The rooms are spacious and clean. However furniture is dated and needs modernising. The mattresses protectors are a disgrace and need throwing out and replacing. The drinks lady needs to wait before charging into the room (knocks once and opens immediately). My son was sitting on the toilet!

Gymnasium, fitness, games entertainment and aqua gym

The gym has seen better days, most machines are broken and there are limited amounts of machines. Only 1 running which is broken and 1 cycling machine. Lots of the weights are missing. There is no air conditioning, fans or windows so the gym gets very hot and stuffy. The sauna is a disgrace, full of chairs and dirty, it smells and there are lots of flies and cock roaches in their. Definitely an area that needs modernising.

Recommendations: The gym should be supervised, lots of young kids using weights and running around.

Games room next door to the gym is equally as gloomy. Hot and stuffy no air conditioning, fans or windows. There is a small kids room which is locked almost all the time,so you are unable to play any games such as shuffle board etc. Also when you are playing table tennis (with broken bats) and your ball slips through the gates you are unable to retrieve it (there are never any spare balls around).

Aqua gym depends on who is running it. If Ruben is doing it its not only great fun but also beneficial, working on all core areas to good music. He is friendly, fun and energetic. If the other girl Melinda is doing it, its dull and boring.

Games are run from 10.30, once again, if Ruben is taking the games it's good and great fun, his personality and enthusiasm rubs off on all.

The evening entertainment is horrendous. Very boring, all I can say is the person booking the shows clearly doesn't watch them! Maybe it would be more suitable for winter months but in summer the shows need to be more exciting and suitable for the target audience instead of the same repetive ones they are now! Too many bad singers with bad wigs (With the exception of the Spanish dancers - they are fantastic).

There should also have pool entertainment such as fashion shows, music, foam parties for the younger generation in the summer etc.

Recommendation: New shows chosen by someone else!

Pool:

The pool area is kept clean and tidy, gardeners maintain the areas very well.
The downside to the pool area is if you leave towels unattended in the morning for more then 30 minutes your belongings are confiscated and locked away. In principle I agree with the idea, as it prevents people misusing the chairs, but it starts far too early - 8.30! Many people with children were split between eating breakfast quickly and deck chair minding, naturally wanting to sit close to the pool to watch their children during the day. This system should start 9.00 - 9.30 just before breakfast finishes.
The lifeguards are courteous and helpful especially the female, I felt sorry for how much abuse they received from guests moaning about the removal of their belongings.
Towels can be changed once a day, although they soon ran out. Apparently they are waiting for new ones, although I noticed they sold them, so why not use this stock! There is also a lack of deck chairs too!

On our last night we wanted to spend a little longer in the sun! The deck chair attendants made it very uncomfortable, banging and kicking chairs around, making us feel awkward at 6.30pm! They still had a vast unoccupied area they could have started on.

Recommendation: The management should come down and spend a day at the pool with the lifeguards!

Security:

Pfft a joke! There is no security to talk of. Anyone can walk into the hotel and use the facilities, and in fact did, increasing the lack of sun beds for paying guests.

Reception staff

Are easily distracted and not particularly helpful.

Overall:

Dissatisfied. Clean but boring dated hotel that needs some love. Too expensive for what it is.

Room Tip: Sea and pool view a must otherwise your at the back of the hotel

Not much to say except that we had a brilliant time. The hotel was all marbled and spotless, nice big (heated) pools, close to a buzzing area - night and day - nice views of the harbour, fun water aerobics, lovely clean rooms... we're definitely missing it and wanting to return! Tip: go to Linares restaurant - lovely lovely steak :P

Room Tip: I recommend a 'sea view' room - best views! (but to be honest all rooms kinda face the sea!)
