“Arona Gran or Bitacora?”
Reviewed January 26, 2013

Having enjoyed a stay of 4 weeks in Tenerife at the Arona Gran in Feb 2011 we decided to follow that with a 6 weeks stay in Feb/March in 2012 but this time staying 2 weeks at Bitacora followed by 4 weeks in Arona Gran (complimentary transfer included). These experiences gave us an insight into both hotels and straight away it must be said that both were well run hotels. Many of the staff at both were friendly and helpful.
Situation: B. is located in Playa de las Américas handy for shops, sea front and buses. A.G. is situated on the edge of Los Cristianos about 20 minutes walk to the main beach and port. There are a few local bars run by Brits.
Hotel exterior: Both pleasant looking, imposing hotels displaying a profusion of geraniums. Attractive lobbies but the lobby in A.G. is exceptional.
Bedrooms: B. Renovation work ongoing (Jan 2013) Pool view rooms have superb views and are larger than A.G. Pool side in both could attract late afternoon sun depending on position so take this into account when booking. Recommend less popular non-pool view rooms (seaward end) in A.G. Generally quieter in A.G. than B. where nearby entertainment could go on until 4.00am.
Bathroom: Superior fittings in A.G. though this may be addressed in ongoing renovations.
Welcome: Complimentary Cava in B - water in A.G. although the latter did give us a welcome drink.
Dining: Both pleasant dining areas and food acceptable in both though you might want to use the microwave. Choice of food good in B., exceptional in A.G. Presentation of food good in both.
Waiter service: More pleasant in B. and impressive speed in clearing the tables. Rather slow in A.G.
Clientele: B. more suited to a younger age group than the A.G.
Entertainment: Not always geared to the age of the clientele but some critical reviews submitted by some guests were not justified even though for some acts there was room for improvement.
Costs: The general superiority of the A.G. hotel is reflected in the price and although drinks were more expensive in A.G. they were more generous.
Hope this helps.

We stayed from the 4th January for 1 week. And I must say one of the best hotels we have stayed on. Couldn't fault anything. Food was as good as the cruise ships we have been on. Highly recommended. Lovely walks into busier area every day but taxis were also at hand

quite a nice hotel rooms could do with a refurbishment, food quite reasonable . 1 bad point you have to buy your own drinks for evening meal this includes water as absolutely no drinks provided.Pools excellent although as usual lots of people put towels on sunbeds and dont turn out which infuriates me.drinking areas nice ,drinks rather expensive .all in all quite a reasonable trip

Room Tip: higher floors are better

We travelled to tenerife on the 15 jan for a week. What a great holiday my partner and i had, this is our first time to tenerife so we were bit unsure, we are in our 30s and heard hotel attracted a more older crowd but to be honest it was great we met great people and cant wait to go back.
The hotel does look a little bit dated but its immaculate and the food is fantastic, staff are so nice and helpful. Everything is on your doorstep really las americas is only about 20 min walk and its 5 euros in a taxi very nice restraunts and shops please try monkey restraunt italian it is great there is 4 different monkeys but the italian is the best staff fantastic.
Loro parque is a must we have been to florida numerous times at seaworld and to be honest this was better than that, you can do a tour which is 10 euros which takes you behind the scenes of the animals was well worth it.

I honestly cant give any negative comments about the hotel and the are we loved it and we are even planning going back in march.

We booked this holiday after staying at a Thomson Platinum hotel in Costa Adeje last January and expected the same standard... Oh how we were disappointed. Yes the reception area and pool areas look very grand .. but under the surface they have done a quick fix upgrade in the main areas. Our room was on the second floor with the pool and sea view , large balcony and got the sun all afternoon. The room was spacious and apart from dust on some surfaces clean. The fridge cannot be used for your own drinks ..and a big notice in the lifts informs guests not to bring food or drink into the hotel for financial reasons.... But the shop across the road was doing a roaring trade so most folk ignored this. The walls of the rooms are very thin and the woman next door was clearly unwell the whole time she was there and we heard her every cough day and night.

The food was the worst I have encountered in a hotel for many years and we travel a lot staying in 4 and 5 star hotels. Throughout the week not once did I pick up a hot plate or eat food that was piping hot. The food is of poor quality and not very appetising.
There was no sanitizer for guests to use in the restaurant and with novo virus and flu rife in Tenerife at present this is not acceptable. Both my husband and I have come down with flu since arriving home, and it is documented on the Canaries website that the number of cases is rising sharply ... so get a flu jab before you go !!
My husband witnessed an old man sneeze all over a tray do desserts one evening... We didn't have dessert again after that, and when out and about people were coughing and spluttering everywhere.

As far as entertainment goes we only listened to the pianist Jeremy one evening which was enough!!

We had an early departure as our flight was at 7.00 am so pick up was at 4.45am we asked the rep if a light breakfast was being served as happens at other 4 & 5 star hotels When you leave early...But no she had asked, as there was 11 of leaving for the early flight, but told we would not be getting our breakfast that morning ... So she advised us to pop over the to the supermarket and get some .... Poor show !!

Overall very disappointing standard of hotel.

Wish we had read reviews before staying here but we trusted Thomson.
The food in the restaurant is disgraceful. They do not clean the prawns and other food is either cooked to cinders or raw. They buy 3rd rate meat, vegetables and a lot of tinned fruit. Fresh fruit was often completely rotten. Waiters are rude. My school dinners were better than this.
This is the most money-grabbing hotel in which I have ever stayed. They advertise free wifi but this is only in reception and if you want wifi in your room or elsewhere in the hotel they wanted to charge us 98euros for 2 weeks.
You get two excuses for pillows each - very poor quality. If you want a decent pillow you have to pay for it. In all the hundreds of hotels I have stayed, in all 5 continents, I have never been charged for pillows. Disgraceful.
They advertise a safe in the room but you have to pay about 15 euros a week!
They advertise a fridge in the room but it has a big notice not to store you own drinks in it. A sweet old Scottish couple got charged 30 euros for two weeks fridge because they were honest and admitted they put their own drinks in the fridge.
The brochure states that the rooms are air conditioned, but it's turned off, Presumably to save money.
Overall a DREADFUL EXPERIENCE. We will never go on another Thomson holiday again.

The Arona was exactly what we wanted and expected on booking. Once we got there it was a bit of a walk to the rest of Los Chritsianos and of course we didn't want to do the nothing we thought we did. Good place but comments about "Gods waiting room" are a bit unfair but it is a bit like that good points free wifi in lobby and great views from the clean and good sized room; down side silly priced beer and wine though and the policy of no carry in - why charge so much when the nearby bars charge a third and less at the supermarket it is just silly you would make more money at the market rate!

Room Tip: Hard to say in the summer the sun would be higher and more rooms would see it all day we got the sun...
