Very affordable train trip that goes thru some lovely scenery. You can sit inside a cabin or in the open air. I recommend the open air carriage. Toilets and car park at station. You can catch the train from Waihi or Waikino. You can buy a return or single ticket. recommend having lunch at the Waikino station Cafe. Friendly conductor. Great effort by the volunteers to keep this attraction going

And so cheap - only $12 return Waihi to Waikino for Gold Card people! Choice of 3 departure times - 10am, 11,45 and 1.45pm Takes about 30 mins. Enjoyed travelling outside and waving to the cows and cars! A real credit to the volunteers who run this. Suggest going on the first train 10am, morning tea at the delightful cafe at the historic Waikino Station (the former old Paeroa Station relocated), go for a walk and explore the area before returning for the last train back to Waihi at 2.30pm.

Love the open carriage experience, as part of the Hauraki Rail Trail ride. The conductor put us wrong by saying the tunnel was closed when it was not and told another couple they would never ride to Paeroa and back in time to catch the last train. The fact was Paeroa is an easy ride and they would have had hours to spare. Luckily they had done their home work so were not put off, but if they were nervous tourists it could have ruined their day.
The Waikino Rail Station Cafe needs to provide food and drinks on the train, they'd do well and they have a great operation.
